When I was looking for an assisted living facility for my father, I knew that I wanted a community…read morethat would encompass assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing with therapy rehabilitation if it was needed. The Gables on Pelham has all of these resources on site and seemed to be the perfect solution. Right from the start, the people we were dealing with were friendly and caring. My 95 year old father has been at The Gables for about a year and a half and has really flourished. He has made some great friends and has been getting physical therapy regularly. He has been able to walk on his own without any assistance, not even with a walker, and is receiving therapy twice a week. It has made a significant difference in his mobility. A few weeks ago, my father suffered a fall in his room. As soon as they realized something was wrong, the staff was quick to respond. Cynethia Allison, the Health and Wellness Director, contacted me immediately. She explained what happened and had EMS take him to the emergency room. He was hospitalized for a couple of days. During his entire stay at the hospital, Cynethia reached out to me several times to check on his status. She is a professional, caring person who exhibits an unbelievable amount of compassion and empathy. The Gables welcomed him back into skilled nursing to begin his rehabilitation and was there just a few days. Unlike some rehab facilities, there was no question about admitting him into skilled nursing from the hospital since he was a resident at The Gables. The staff there made the entire process a smooth transition. Cynethia again stayed in constant touch with me on his progress. He was moved back to his own apartment where she set up on-site physical therapy. She arranged for his meals to be delivered to his apartment daily until he had the confidence to walk on his own back to the dining room. The entire staff at The Gables on Pelham really showed their concern by not only speaking with me while on my regular visits to see my father, but stopping in to see him and his progress, too. Cynethia's team members are super nice to him and always go above and beyond in his care. Her leadership is evident in their training. After this incident I am confident that our choice, The Gable on Pelham, was the best choice for my father. Their associates are, in my opinion, among the best, from nursing, administration, and marketing, to maintenance. Each associate displays an enormous amount of pride and care. I am forever indebted to them and at total peace knowing that every moment of every day my father is safe and in excellent hands.

He fell and was on the floor for 5 hours and they didn't know. When they called us they said he had been on the floor for 10 minutes but he had left messages on our answering machine so we knew it was longer. They have let his hygiene decline. His room stinks. He stinks. They didn't do his laundry or have him change his clothes. The doctor put him on mental health drugs without telling us. Now that he is fragile, falling down, incontinent, and they're kicking him out--even though they say on their page that they do incontinence care. There was no communication. They have been taking his money and not giving value for what they got. Today they asked us when we were going to move his things. We've paid $3,200 for this month. We asked if they were going to pro-rate the rent. We told them if they did we would move his stuff today. No response. The administrator, a non-medical person made this decision and didn't have the professionalism to tell my husband himself. He refused to come to the phone! My father-in-law was not a model tenant, he's grumpy, but this leadership team made no effort to involve us in securing cooperation from him. For three thousand a month, one would expect greater professionalism.

In the last month a majority of his items went missing, he was constantly covered in urine and was never changed, and he was not being taken care of. My family member was there with dementia and we were NOT notified that he had become a fall risk. He was unsupervised (per usual) and fell so hard his head put a whole in the wall. When he came back from the ER the EMS could not find a single available staff to sign him in because they were NOWHERE to be found. After complaining about this experience we received an extremely condescending email from Brittany Kinnard. She had lots of inaccurate statements in her communication with us and refused to look more into the incident. Our experience with her was awful. This fall led to our family members death due to their negligence. Then they had the audacity to send us a bill for the hole that was put into the wall. I would never in a million years recommend this horrible place to anyone. It seems as if the positive experience was all an act to get us in there and then they showed their true colors and lack of care for their patients. I would shut this place down if I could.

It is listed as a "Memory Center for Adults" with dementia, but although they post on the wall activities, they do no such activities. I visited a friend there one day and I was not allowed to see her. I dropped off some magazines and some calendars as there are no calendars ANYWHERE for the clients to see. I gave the items to Roz, one of the aides. My friend NEVER GOT THE ITEMS!!! They were in a nice bag as I knew my friend would enjoy it, she never even got the empty bag. When I called to ask what happened to the items, I was yelled at and hung up on. They list that there are alternative menu items, but when my friend asked for one of the items, they told her the only thing that was available was what she was given. The Aides play loud music all night long making it difficult to sleep. The aides are friendly to your face, but once you're gone....your family member is at their mercy. The Head of Nursing has no nursing credentials and if you try to Google it and see who the owners are....you can't find any company who owns the place. The Oaks will take anyone as long as you have a check to pay the bill at the end of the month. They actually sent someone to my friends home to see if she "qualified" for Memory Care, but they don't even play Bingo with the clients. The clients just sit on furniture during the day, surrounded by aides and if they go to their room to nap, they are disturbed and told they should join the group. Many of the clients are in the the end stage throws of Alzheimer's or Cardio Vascular disease which affects their memory. The few ladies that I saw while visiting were not even bathed and their hair was greasy demonstrating to me that they have little to no care. It's a shame when people can't even show common decency for adults who are in their twilight years and all they need is a little kindness.
