    Trio of pork belly
    Gar Wing L.

Unpretentious little French restaurant, I had heard good things & decided it was time for a visit. Started with a Marmite which is like a little smoked haddock & mussel soup with a pastry top, it wasn't anything exciting, but my wife had pumpkin valoute with Stilton tortellini which was very good. For mains I chose the trio of pork belly & the mrs had the Cornish lamb, both were well executed & delicious. To accompany we had a side of gratin cauliflower, unfortunately the sauce was runny & had split. Desserts, we had coffee creme brûlée & the passion fruit tart, the star was the creme brûlée rich with intense coffee flavour. Service was attentive & the nice lady at the front of house was very welcoming. Overall great value, but the portions were a little small as I still had room in my belly!

The French Table. I had been told that The French Table was a great little bistro. Judging by the fact that every time I called for a reservation they were booked solid I suspect the rumors were true. So today I finally got in (nearly a year later). I am not local (I am from the states) and only visit get to this area on business. The ambiance is delightful and the service staff friendly and attentive. Upon being seated I was immediately offered fresh homemade bread (several selections on which I choose the olive bread - delicious). My starter was a poached salmon with fried scallops and beets. A delightfully refreshing and mildly filling dish. Scallops and salmon cooked nicely and the greens and beets fresh. The salmon was the star of this dish as advertised. Between course the nice young man came by with more bread and this time I tried the chorizo bread. Fresh and hearty. My entree was the Filet of beef cooked medium rare. I am rather a bit of a beef snob so filet from the UK rarely impresses but this filet was. The exception to that rule. Tender, cooked to order and masterfully presented. Casual conversation with other dinners confirmed my experience as not an exception but rather the norm. So I am happy to report it was worth the wait and that The French Table can hold it own in all of London and is a rare jewel for the Surbiton/Kingston area. Well done.

The best restaurant in the area. For many years the management has been able to hold the standard at the highest level.

It is a shame that it is often quiet during the week, but on Friday and Saturday, this place kicks off. As you walk in, your eyes meet an elderly French lady playing the accordion (she is only here at the weekend, but it is almost worth visiting just for her). Occasionally a Jazz band pitches up and plays live. Then whole tables get up and start dancing. I would like to add that there is actually no dance floor so watch out for someone whizzing past you. If I am here with a big group of friends we order a large Fruit De La Mer; a huge platter of fresh seafood on ice. If you fancied a smaller meal I would recommend a pot of the mussels, which has that deliciously sea-salty flavour and comes in either a starter or main course portion. Get a side order of big fat chips to soak up the herb sauce, and treat yourself to a bottle of white wine, the muscadet is particularly good here. There are also plenty of meat dishes, one of the most popular being the steak, which comes with different sauces - the garlic and peppercorn is the tastiest. At dessert, look out for the dark chocolate mousse, which is the richest, thickest mousse I have ever eaten. The meals seem to add up a bit here, but for an occasional taste of France it is well worth visiting.

Romantic lighting, bistro style and a good but pricey menu. J P the owner offered me several specials including langoustine, mussels and crab. I chose prawns and scallops, but when I asked for a salad, his true french nature came out. Salad? he said, looking down his nose I don't think so! I will put some salad garnish on the plate, but you can hava salad when you go home! Oh. Still, it was very tasty, with a very nice red wine and the larger of the 2 cheese plates for dessert (£9.50 for one) with a choice so pungent, I could smell it when he opened the kitchen door! I won't say what it reminded me of :-S The whole thing came to a whopping £55 just for little old me! Still, every so often it's good to treat yourself, and I'm not one for handbags and shoes :-)

The host greeted up and asked if we had reservations on that fine Saturday evening; we did not. He found us a table anyway but told us that he needed it back in 2 hours (no problem). Our server came along and took our drink orders fairly quickly. She was attentive, but not overly, for the rest of the evening. Our food was good. The kids pasta dish was pretty bland, but that was probably on purpose. My goat cheese salad was very good. So was the chicken and walnut salad my friend had. I think that the only complaint was from my husband who thought his baked crepe with mushrooms was a bit too greasy. His French Onion soup was excellent though. The presentation of the food was great. I have added some pics.

It was not busy and people working their were avoiding eye contact with us while waiting at the door and wasn't even given a hello just a hère pointing to the closest table. The menu has " Specials " which are printed in a misleading way on the menu and made the lunch much more expensive then expected. Which also the servers were extremely uncouth about explaining. The béarnaise sauce was so sweet it tasted more like cake frosting. This meal was almost double the price I expected with poor service and not even good food. I would strongly recommend you go anywhere around. We made the mistake for you.
