I've never woken up and thought, "Gee, I'm feeling good, I might go buy some art today." But that's…read morebasically how my day ended up unfolding this past Saturday. While doing the Groundhog Day walking tour, we decided to check out the Old Courthouse/current Arts Center just for the hell of it. I'm not really into art unless it involves renderings of cute animals or my favorite celebrities (I wouldn't mind a nice over-the-fireplace portrait of Bill Murray or Bernie Mac or David Letterman), but for the most part, when I hear people talk about art I just have to drift off to another place to keep myself from rolling my eyes at the pretension, but here, I didn't get that... at all. We walked around and were shocked with the collection of works here as well as the quality and lessn't we forget price. They had handmade unique pottery that was unlike any pottery I'd ever seen before and pretty much priced for a limited budget person such as myself. There were many rooms to roam though, leading in a circle around the main room with register and beautiful older ladies with long, stringy grey hair - exactly the way you'd picture older, artsy, free-spirited women. In the second to last room in the round-about gallery, I found something that basically stopped me in my tracks. It was titled 'Fortune Teler' and it was a relatively giant framed canvas, full of color, it had hanging beads, mini-lightbulbs, little sequins set into the partial gold-filigree'd frame with a the work itself being completely covered in bright but shadowy colors that had an orange/yellow-haired boy flipping over two unreadable tarot cards for a big, green cat and a magenta rhino (that at first I admittedly though was an aardvark - my favorite animal next to manatees). I couldn't be torn away from it. And it was only (and normally I would've shit my pants over this price) $150. I took a pics of it, spent another 4-hours with it on my mind while we walked the town and went back 15 minutes before close to seal the sale. The woman said she was sad to see that painting go but could tell from looking at me that we were a right match, which may have all been pillow-talk, but it really does feel like it was made for me. I do wish they'd had a bit more information on the artist and painting but, it was right on the dot when they were closing and they were able to take down my info so hoping I'll hear back, and if not, I'm fine with just having the painting, too.

I'm not really an art gallery person, but this was one of only a couple places open on a Sunday…read moreafternoon, so my husband and I walked around. The historic building holds several rooms with assorted paintings and sculptures from local and national artists. Some are landscape paintings while others are strange mobiles made of wood. One display was a large photo of a naked obese woman laying on a pile of books, along with an actual pile of books below the photo! It was kind of cool walking around and seeing some of the local talent, plus some part of the building itself (we found a heavy metal door that said "McHenry County Records" from the 19th century. We do not know the entire history of the paintings, but we do know they are over 60 year old. Each time we worked with Chris and he listened to what we wanted and helped us find the right frame. He did not rush us through the process, nor does he push his recommendations on you . He gave us the time to make a decision and understand our style. He helped us select frames that brought out the colors in the paintings. All of the finished products were beyond our expectations and each day when I look at them I appreciate the history and bit of family legacy it has brought into our home.

They did an excellent job of helping me work within my budget and the finished project was great. They stretched the canvas, framed it beautifully, and even left it open in the back so that the oils could continue to dry throughout its life. I recently moved and wanted to get a few newer pieces framed. Again, I couldn't be happier with the results. I found the right frames and theft held me consider something new: the right glass. I had four pieces and two of them were framed using art glass. In the picture you can see how much it mitigates the reflection of light sources around it and allows for amazing detail to be seen. It was such a great choice on these two prints. The other two I was a little bit more creative with in terms of the frames due to their location in my home. Both of them turned out excellent as well. They really have something for everyone. If you need something simple, they have it. I'm not one for fussy frames and they have a lot of simple frames in loads of colors. However if you need an opulent gold-leaf frame to hang that 17th century oil portrait in your living room, they also have you covered. Luckily there's a lot in between as well. You can expect professional, friendly service and good guidance if you need it. Both times I came to pick out a frame and drop the art off, they were working with repeat customers. It really instills a sense of confidence when you see so many repeat customers at a place. I guess now I'm one of them!

We had driven around the square in Woodstock, determined to continue on our trip to Minneapolis,…read morewhen either my boyfriend's mom or sister noticed a little shop tucked in among the other stores. They convinced my boyfriend to make another loop around the square and park in front of the quaint shop because we had to check it out. I'm so glad they made us turn around. The Backdrop is a find that is chock full of so many other great finds. This is a gift shop that makes you want to buy a few things for yourself -- which I did. The Backdrop has cards, pillows, trinkets, jewelry, novelty books, home decor and other doo-dads a-plenty. We spent more than the five minutes we told my boyfriend we would take perusing everything. And so many of the finds were very affordable, such as the locket I got for about $15 and a print about beer for $12. The owners -- or at least I believe they are the owners -- were also great to chat with. They had actually been down to Kentucky for Kentucky Crafted, and they had a better knowledge of past Kentucky governors than I have. It was nice to talk to someone who is passionate and easy to talk to about my fave state. It's probably good that I don't live in Woodstock or else I spend way too much money at The Backdrop on a regular basis.

So you can see why it came in so handy when I happened upon this cute shop in Woodstock Square that sold a book teaching Klingon. The Backdrop is one of the more unusual home decor shops I've ever come across. I could look for hours and spend a fortune. There are a lot of unique items such as the aforementioned Klingon book (see pic), weird and creepy mounted doll heads, beeswax art, beautiful handmade jewelry, and a ton of truly unique home decor. It is probably my favorite shop in Woodstock. I feel like you can find something for everyone at this store. If issued the challenge, I dare say I could buy for everyone on my Christmas list here. I could certainly buy a bunch for myself! Items found here are moderate to pricey, but you are definitely paying for a carefully curated collection of items, and in my book, unique equals special, so I very much appreciate finding items here I can't elsewhere. Everything here is unique, even items not for sale, like foam core cutouts and painted decor (that you would never believe were made from foam core in a million years), or yard sticks mounted and used as display shelves. Inspiring is the word I would use. You can really get your creative juices flowing after a saunter through the store. You will think of all sorts of home projects with The Backdrop as the inspiration. As a graphic designer, I admire the imaginative and innovative selections and executions. As a Klingon, I demand it.

Let me start with the Positives, and what I liked: - Adorable shop - Love the IDEA of this place, and the collaboration of artists. - Loved the actual items in the store - Girl working seemed somewhat friendly. Not pushy. But here are the negatives, and why I probably won't be back: - WAY too expensive for my blood. They seemed HIGHLY over-priced. HIGHLY. I'm sorry but i'm not paying $700 for your dresser that I could pickup at a resale store for $100 and re-finish myself for under a $100. It's outrageous. - Small. I guess based on what I'd seen/heard, i expected more. Bigger. The shop is tiny, thus there really wasn't a lot of furniture there, so it really wasn't worth my drive. Overall, what a really cool idea. I really wanted to fall in love with this place, and was really excited to go check it out. But i can't get over the disappointment of what it actually was. Here's my compromise: If you're in the area, definitely stop by and check it out! Maybe you can spend more dough than I, and will find a piece that you absolutely adore. I say, it doesn't hurt to stop if you're nearby! Just don't make a special trip for it. If they ever expand, and lower prices, I'll most def be back!
