I've been driving by this place for years and never thought to stop to eat. Five years after their opening (I believe in 2013, according to a framed review in their building), at the recommendation of a family friend, we had dinner there.
The inside is a huge surprise from the outside. It was cute and quaint, clean and nicely-decorated, which was a big contrast from what the building looks like from the outside. The windows could be cleaned, and a lot of the graphics outside were faded from sun exposure, and I think the gravel parking lot brings down the "feel" of the place, too. DO NOT JUDGE THEM BY THE OUTSIDE.
We had a party of seven, and were pleased to have a table ready for us almost immediately. They also had a sling/carrier for the baby's car-seat, and a booster seat for the toddler. I'd probably have preferred a highchair, especially since the booster didn't have any straps to secure it to the chair OR to secure the child in it, but I didn't ask if they had highchairs so that's on me. With the booster, they also supplied crayons and a menu/activity sheet, which ended up being great at distracting.
NOW FOR THE ACTUAL FOOD. Kaitlyn was our server, and from the very beginning she made us feel comfortable and at ease. She answered all our questions about the menu knowledgeably (even the corny jokes my dad was making) and with a level of friendliness that you want from servers but don't often get.
There was nothing that anyone at our table ordered that we didn't like. Everything was delicious. Based on what we'd gotten, I highly recommend:
Crab Truffles (melt-in-your-mouth and not spicy at all despite listing jalapenos as an ingredient, which is a good thing for me but might be a downside for others)
Calamari (perfect cooked, the breading was crunchy, but the calamari itself was tender and not overly-chewy)
House Salad (with ranch dressing, nothing fancy, but was what I'd expect for a salad)
Things I didn't try, but others at the table loved:
Caesar Salad
Fish & Chips
Haddock Sandwich
I had the Fried Seafood Platter, and it was HUGE and delicious. I ended up giving away samples of everything to others at the table because it was so much food for one person. Between the sharing and my own appetite, though, I cleared the plate (I mean, re-heating fried foods is never easy and that's the excuse I'm using). I'm not normally a fan of hush puppies, but even those were amazing. I'm not sure if their fries are twice-fried or have a special breading, but something about them was magical -- they were crisp on the outside but soft on the inside, and the texture of them was similar to Checker's/Rally's fries, which I loved.
Miraculously, we still had room for dessert after everything. Almond Creek Cakery supplies cupcakes to the restaurant (we were told that it's run by the aunt of The Foxy Fish's owners) and I WANT MORE. Between the bunch of us, we shared three cupcakes (fruity pebbles, cookie dough, and chocolate), and they were all delicious -- moist cake with yummy frosting, and fun toppings AND delicious fillings.
We left wondering how we'd managed to bypass this place for so long, and I'm already perusing the menu for what I'm going to try the next time I'm there. read more
