Quality/Quantity - Our local neighborhood bar. Indoor and outdoor seating (smoking). Today it looked like every one went out front to smoke, I did not check to see if the back was closed. My buddy is a regular and knows the team that works here. This has been our go to place when I visit. Beers on tap, full bar, cocktail program, etc. Pool, darts, etc. Events - Bands, live music, etc. Happy hour available. But we always meet late at night as he is just too busy during the day and still has young kids. Atmosphere - Decent size neighborhood bar. Full bar, cocktails, wine, beer, etc. Quiet for a Friday night, which suits me just fine; actually, I prefer it that way. Open 7 days a week from noon till 2am, and we closed the bar, as usual (Yelp hours differ slightly). Events - See their website. Dart league, pool league, etc. Service - Good, not sure if she recognized me as a "regular" or because my buddy who is a regular and showed up later. Always able to open a tab or pay as you go. FYI - Free BBQ on select Sundays and munchies on select nights. Price - $80 + generous tip. Yes, we drink a lot. And could have even drank more. Actually very reasonably priced for SF, considering how many drinks we got today. Just noticed that I can buy pitchers?!?! That might save me a few $$ in the future, lol. This was the first bars I went to in the Outer Sunset and, years later, it remains one of my favorites. It cozy with darts, pool, and good, affordable drinks. But the real draw is the amazing community and bartenders. They make it feel like home. As a fifth generation San Franciscan I can truly appreciate a bar like the four deuces. My buddy who ive inown since 3rd grade texted me to meet up here...I had never heard of the 4 Deuces...I was shocked how great a place it is! Not really a dive bar at all. Really clean. Comfy space with plenty of screens, pool table, darts. Great backyard area. Reasonable prices. Pint and a shot are 12 bucks Fantastic staff. The lovely lady who was 4-5th gen SF was amazing. When they do darts tournaments, the pool table is off limits because there's not enough space for people to play darts. Customer age range looks 30+. Awesome service, neighborhood friendly place to watch the game. Really nice bartender, Betty there made my NY Eve super lovely as well. I went in the first time, forgot my phone, came back and immediately greeted by Betty. She made an awesome cosmo drink perfect for pictures. Pink is my favorite color as I am aka babysoftpink for my online broadcast. Clean no stickiness on table. Easygoing , nice crowd there. I sat on the side to post for my pictures and felt totally comfortable, everyone was having lots of fun to prep for the new year so if you need some family vibe of happiness, this is the spot. I saw the pool table and there were pathway to the backyard for smokes, dog runaround and business etc. Not your typical Irish pub is also situated to a certain four-stars seafood restaurant if you are hungry before or after! My UberEats super store for dim sum is also nearby. Plenty of street parking outside. I saw two both times I stopped by this afternoon. Every time I've been here the staff is super nice and professional and makes whatever drink I want exactly how I want it they make a point to remember me and my dogs. This place has done a total 180! The staff (give it up for an all female bartending team) are amazing and run the place like a top. Strong drinks, great local liquor selection, and always a fun vibe. Big bar for pool and darts and many fun regulars. They have food for some holidays (St. Patty's, Cinco de Mayo, etc) They even have an outdoor patio that's dog friendly before 8pm. I walked in on a Tuesday night, texting my partner about how wonderful it was to find a spot that has pool and darts to hang out at while we worked on laundry nearby-- only to be harrassed by the bartender and another staff member about how I'm not allowed in the space because I'm underage WITHOUT EVEN CHECKING MY ID AND VERIFYING THAT I WAS OF AGE!!!! Came here with the co-workers to watch the Monday Night Football game and the Star Wars trailer!!! Good night out for sure. Started out with brews and eventually turned to the mixed drinks later in the night. I like the beers on tap here. Good selections to choose from as well. I had considered getting the PBR that was on tap because they had the happy hour deals going but I moved on from it. I found the outside seating to be nice. It is fairly small but there is enough room to function. The sunset really made the time in the patio well worth the it. The place didn't get too busy which made for ample room to walk around and feel free. There were also hotdogs!!! They were a nice touch to this place especially after having my brews!!!! No one went over to the jukebox to turn on tunes but it was cool though. A few folks played at the pool table while some of the others played darts. Also, the have a charging station for you cellphone!! Yes, that is what I am talking about!! That is much appreciated. The evening was just a success. We walked in on a lazy Saturday afternoon and the bar was filled. The mood is super casual. Love the bison decor behind the bar. The bartender was friendly and super quick. Costello's is a great bar, and so close to home. Apparently they have DJs, karaoke, and other similar offerings, but I usually just end up stopping by for a pint on the way home, avoiding the late night crowds. As an after work bar, it can't be beat. The clientele is primarily Irish - and I mean, guys from Ireland with heavy accents Irish. Everyone seems to know each other, and the bartenders are very personable. Drinks are cheap - a Bushmills, a Jameson, and 2 pints of Guinness will set you back about $18. Sports on the TVs, with Giants games always playing, and the ponies running. The food is decent, too. Minus one star for a skylight -- when I'm drinking mid day, I don't always want to remember the time. But + 4 stars for the overall ambiance, which feels much more like a European pub than a typical low priced dive bar. Great place, go there often! read more

At first I was a little confused how Costello's could have a 4.5 star average and Shannon Arms only 3.5...after all, Costello's is even more intimidatingly Irish than SA. I mean, I felt like I was crashing a private party here. Not that I got any surly looks; the Costello's crowd is at least a little more genteel than the movers-&-plumbers types at SA. But at least SA has the occasional SF State student to make you stick out a little less...wait a minute, that's it! That's why the ratings are lower there, because all the SF State students wander in and get scared away. Costello's is out where no one will ever just stumble across it. It's funny, though: one thing I love about SF is very little of it feels exclusionary. But possibly the toughest nut to crack for me has been these Irish pubs. And the irony is I'm Irish! I mean, I've actually stood in Greyabbey at the grave of my Great^N Grandfather, born 1722. I'm always tempted to play the Irish card in these situations, but they'd probably pry out the fact that we're actually Ulster Scots, and I'm not sure how well that would go over. Oh well. Maybe the karaoke or quiz night would give me an in. In the meantime, I'll head back up Taraval to the true bar of my people: Dragon Lounge. read more

tl;dr if you're looking for a neighborhood dive bar that's reasonably priced, this is PERFECT for you! I'm going to be honest though, I'm not really a fan of places that are really only for going and partying. I really only go to Four Deuces on the rare occasion that I want to get wasted and not think about it (and because my SO usually wants to go), which is why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. But when I'm in the mood to do that, this is a great place. And if you're a dive bar kind of person, this is sure to be a 5 star place for you. The service is great, and the music is pretty good (alcohol may have influenced the music part) but there's a jukebox that's pretty modern and you can pick songs for a reasonable price. They also have darts and pool, so if you like to play either of those, you can! The cocktail menu is also pretty good. My personal favorite is the cucumber refresher if I'm not feeling bourbon. The cocktails are also SUPER reasonable, especially for SF. If I can remember, they're like $9-$10. Also, the bathrooms are usually really clean and you definitely don't feel gross about using them. They don't have food, but they do have chips for purchase if you have a bit of the drunchies. So yeah, if you're wanting to go party with your friends but you don't want to go to a club and you like divey but not gross, Four Deuces won't disappoint you. read more

I love this place. Recently, my fiancé and I have found ourselves here just about every weekend for the past month, because we live relatively close. It's lovely to sit outside on a sunny Saturday and sip on one of their delicious cocktails and the staff are great. Also a favorite for a nice Friday or Saturday night with your friends, as it is never too packed but also not awkwardly quiet! It's also a ton of fun to watch the lads play darts! Also, they put out an awesome spread for this last super bowl and didn't charge a cover OR harass the patrons to buy drinks! Great bar to hang out on a nice day in SF. Bar has a pool table, darts, jukebox and great patio for the sunny days! Betty is my favorite bartender mixing up my favorite Cocktails. She makes the best Bloody Mary! Trust me you won't be disappointed. She's an SF native and has worked all around SF and the former 3300 Club before it sadly burned down. The energy is a good mix of old and young. I spent my birthday here with a friend and played some tunes on the jukebox and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Ahhhh...I've found it! The bar that makes anyone who is more than one generation removed from Ireland incredibly uncomfortable and those *lucky* enough to be straight from the Old Sod feel right at home! For my 100th review, I knew I wanted a place that was near and dear to my heart. This place definitely is, and to top it off, they didn't fail at getting me tipsy on a random Wednesday night (I may or may not be typing this in my hungover state). Right on! They have delicious kettle chips to munch on while you pour the Jameson down your gullet and the bartenders are all so nice. I didn't meet one person there who didn't have a brogue so thick that I could barely understand them nor did I meet anyone who was sober. I came here with my family who literally had gotten off the plane from Ireland 24 hours earlier and they felt like they were right back at home (somewhat counterproductive). Someone (ok, it was my cousin) started singing some Irish songs and everyone joined in and it felt like we were in a pub in Cork. If this place weren't a 40 min bus ride from my house, I'd be coming here every night, or at least as often as my liver would allow. Where are all the Irish folk? Why, here of course!!!!!! I stopped here a few times when I lived a few blocks away. I went with a previous roommate because the couple that lived around the corner from us, their niece and niece's friend were house-sitting from Ireland while the couple was in Ireland. Got that?? They suggested we pop on over as they were doing some type of dinner here at the pub, so we decided "What the hell, let's go hang with the Irish folk!" We came with the idea that we'd hang out for a little bit, but when we arrived, it was freakin' Thanksgiving Irish style! Ok, not really, but they were doing some crazy ass bbq fest and they were like "Here, have foooooooooood!!!!!" So we sat and had us some food. Turns out the same night was quiz night. Woot!! So we stayed for a few rounds which was fun. We had a bit of an advantage being the Americans when it came to cultural questions, but it was so fun. The regulars were welcoming and super nice. They've recently made a lot of improvements to this bar and the result is great. It's gotten a complete makeover and is so much cleaner, nicer, and more modern. It's a very spacious bar so it always had the potential to be as nice as it is now. Lots of nice flatscreens and a virtual jukebox. They have darts and they've added a pool table now too. There's a patio area in the back for smokers. It used to be cash only and now they take cards, so it's much more convenient. The vibe is also different, in a good way. The crowd is younger, new bartenders are very pleasant and friendly. One bartender Amanda always goes totally above and beyond to make you feel welcome. They make good drinks and are always attentive. I used to come here when it was an Irish dive because it's convenient in my neighborhood; now I come here because I actually like the place. Sunset's Irish pubs are definitely worth checking out, and Costello's is my favorite of the lot. They're a remnant of the days when the neighborhood was predominantly Irish, and even though that's no longer the case the clientele seems to hail mostly from Eire. It's a great place to soak up some of the neighborhood's culture and maybe make an interesting friend or two. They're a good place to watch NFL games at, as they frequently give out free food to their patrons during games. I watched some college ball there, which they don't make as big of a deal about, but they were accommodating. It's worth mentioning that the owner and a lot of the employees there are incredibly friendly. I actually came in one morning while my clothes were in the laundry to kill some time and the owner was opening. I was unemployed at the time, having moved to Cali not long before, and the owner gave me a free Guinness to welcome me to the neighborhood and even offered to help me find a job.
