Came in to grab a beer while waiting for a table at a restaurant nearby and enjoyed the divey vibes here. It's a nice neighborhood spot with sports playing and easy to stop in for a bit. A lovely dive out by Ocean Beach. Here's a story: one night several years ago, I was on a double date, the wife and another couple we are friends with. We were headed to the Korean place across the street and opted for a pre-dinner cocktail at Flanahan's. The girls balked, because they thought it looked unsafe. We convince them to step inside at least and we were immediately confronted by the sight of a guy -- reading his voter pamphlet. Looks can be deceiving, it's a comfortable, non-threatening neighborhood gathering spot with a nice parklet in front for the covid-conscious like me. Flanahan's forms part of my "Outer Sunset trifecta" of cool bars: here, The Riptide, and Pitt's. One could keep headed north to Hockey Haven and the vibe remains intact. read more

Nice little pub. Stopped in on St. Patrick's day. I figured a place with the name Flanahan's and an Irish flag out front would have Irish beer on tap. You'd be wrong. Guinness available in a can that they nicely pour in to a glass for you but not nearly as good as out of a Guinness tap. Local crowd was definitely lively and fun. Fine beers on tap just thought that a pub with an Irish sounding name would have Irish beers (Guinness, Harp etc.) on tap. read more

It was my first time coming to this pub and it was my worst experience I've ever had at a bar in my life. The bartender would disappear periodically and the men in the bar were so rude and disrespectful and I just wanted to leave but I had to wait 15 minutes for the bartender to get back. They need to get ahold of the customers in there because I've never been so disrespected in my life. A bar is not the place to bring up politics especially the roe v wade because it is such a touchy subject. The bartender should have been there to deescalate the situation but he didn't and it resulted in every female in the bar walking out because of how disgusting it was in there. I grew up in this hood, always saw old drunk people stumbling out. When I was younger I was scared of what goes on in there..I saw old people doing secret knocks to get in at 7am...Oh hell no I'm not going in. Dive Bar Diva is back.. well sorta! I know it's been awhile since I last reviewed a dive bar, so here goes. Flanahan's Pub is an area in the city where I rarely venture. It's easy to forget the Sunset, Irving, and Richmond neighborhoods when there are so many hot spots in NOPA, Hayes Valley, SOMA, and Embarcadero. Trust me when I say that the Outer Sunset has some jems, and this dive bar is one of them. Earlier this year, I was in the area for a family dinner, and afterwards, the cousins and I decided to imbibe and take in the last minutes of a Dubs game. Flanahan's was our spot with a few TV screens scattered throughout the bar! And, there's a dart board, too, should you care to wager in some friendly competition while drinking. Flanahan's is Cash Only bar (with an ATM machine in the back), with a decent selection whiskey, tequilas, gins, and vodkas, as well as draft and bottled beers. Hello, while at at dive bar, one must drink Draft PBR, right??!?! There are bar stools and barrel tables for you to place your drinks if you're not sitting right at the bar. Decent bar to go to on Noriega Street. After everything is closed down, this place is poppin' because the other stores surrounding this bar is closed! What's really cool with this bar is that the drinks here are not overpriced at all. Pretty good vibe and atmosphere here. The only downside was that my boyfriend wasn't able to get a drink because he used his expired driver's license. I've been to bars that accepted expired licenses and this bar is the stricter one. I mean, yes the ID is expired but his birthday never changes... Also, the fact that the bartender was rude to us. She disregarded my party when we were there and gave condescending looks and responses. We didn't know why but we just got our drinks and never bothered about it. read more

My friends and I randomly chanced upon this place while waiting for our reservation time at a nearby restaurant. I didn't have super high expectations coming in since we just wanted somewhere to hang out and get out of the wind for about half an hour or so. The interior was surprisingly cozy and quite clean, with bar seats both along the bar as well as along the wall. There was a hip and new flat-screen tv that was playing music, and a game table as well as dartboards along the back wall. Four or five other patrons were sitting along the bar, and a couple seemed to be engaged in conversation as new acquaintances. The bartender, Annette, was super friendly and sweet. She patiently gave my friend beer recommendations (I forgot what she got, but it was good!) and loaned us darts for the dartboard. Prices were reasonable, and I liked that there were actual coasters instead of just paper napkins. It wasn't super crowded, but there was a nice, friendly vibe to the place. I'd stop by again if I'm in the area, especially since there's a dartboard! read more

If you're looking for an amazing dive bar in the sunset district, then look no further because this place is a winner! Rarely do you find gems like this anymore because our city has been getting so gentrified over the years and it's nice to see that places like this still exist. Best part about this place is the fact that they open at 8am and you will find great daily drink specials too. I've been there a couple times during the day and the locals are posted up at all hours so don't be surprised to see people starting their "day" early. It's a super friendly group of locals that makes you feel super welcome too. Do yourself a favor and grab a drink here before waiting in the devils tooth baking line (it's across the street), you'll thank me later. read more

Such an awesome bar. Actually the first bar I went to when I turned 21. I mainly only come on Tuesday's because they have bacon night. At the back of the bar, they have a table that serves a whole croc pot of bacon, along with ingredients to make a sandwich. The free bacon is all the reason why I come. They used to have a drink called the grand slam where a piece of bacon is eaten at the end as chase. Two bartenders have left since the first time I've been here. It's such a bummer because they ended the tradition of the grand slam. The new bartender doesn't even know what it is. Nonetheless, I always have a great time here. Dog friendly too! read more

Yep - its a dive! You hardly notice the place when you walk by...let alone drive by. This is one of those places that makes you feel mildly uncomfortable when you walk in. Strange lighting, sticky stools where the vinyl is torn in many a spot (a MUST at a good dive), a table near the back with dilapitaed crock pots adorning it, which is ultra scary because you know that the barflys use them for occasional potlucks, and stares that just say "Who the f*#! are you and what ar you doing in OUR bar!!!???". I came here for the first time with a friend who only likes fruity drinks (lord help him), and with a promise from a drunk night prior, that I wold partake in these fruity drinks with him on this fine evening. I ordered some crap with Midori in it. I got a drink with Midori, all right , and about 50 fruit flies. The bartender didn't seem to think this was at all offensive. She made a lating impression on me as she laughed when I ordered a beer in a bottle. Mean stares, tons of trivia books to divert your attention from the mean stares and a glass full of bugs. I can't help but give this place 4 stars. I took one away because the bartender ran into me at one of my regular neighborhood bars, cranked up out of her mind, and wouldn't leave me alone. Well, ya want a dive bar, or ya want a hipster-posing-as-dive-bar, dive bar? If the latter... go to any ol' bar in The Mission, man. If the former, wander in onto the "Hotel California" of dive bars... you can check out anytime you like, but you can NEVER leave. Well, some of the regulars there do look like they have never left, and actually "set up cot" in a back room somewhere. Okay, I came, went, and left pretty quickly because they didn't have anything diet. Yah, yah, I know. You don't go wandering into bar looking for sugar-free red bull or diet whatnot. And, I'm still giving this place a solid 4 stars, just because the bartender was just that awesome. If you live in, or anywhere near this neighborhood, this is the place you're going to want people to shout "Norm!" to ya. Even if you're tea-totaling, it's just like the Regal Beagle; catch up on the local gossip, and watch one of the boob-tubes. Unfortunately, we just missed Tara's taco Tuesday's (which seems to start at about 3:30). I was kinda bummed about that, as I sipped on my ice-water. But, this place reminded me a lot of Chamber Room in Sac with their NYE's spread, or Pre-Flite with their down-home munchie spread. Recently, my brother in law discovered a new Korean dish, called "Boon-dae jigae," which according to my mother means something like "Barrack casserole," so-called because it was invented by some Korean soldiers desperate to make their rations more palatable. Apparently, in Korea, the soldier's typical rations include: instant noodles (no, duh), Spam (well, of course), hot dogs (wow, fancy), and some kind of beans (I wouldn't have guessed that). The casserole is essentially adding water, then boiling it with all these ingredients, with some kind of spicy red stuff (who knows what). (Notice the utter lack of vegetables.) Well, anyway, my brother in law took me out to SF over the holidays, where we met up with a couple of his buddies. First we went to some surf bar (I think it was called "Beach Chalet" or something), where we ginned up with the following combination: 2 Makers, 1 Glenlivet and 1 beer. The cost was $28, with tip, came to $33 or so. I mention this for context. I take it this is about average price for drinks in SF, and compatible to LA (where I live), and a bit cheaper than NYC. You still with me? Anyway, after a couple of drinks, we motor over to this Korean drinking place for the Boon-dae jiggae, which my brother in law found on line. The place was pretty busy and there was a 30 minute wait. (Incidentally, if you are non-Korean cum non-Asian, you should not feel in anyway intimidated by this place--the name of which I forget--because although almost everyone in there is Asian, almost none--save the wait staff--is Korean. So you shouldn't feel any more foreign than any of the other patrons. It's not like we Koreans like other Asians more than non-Asians. You are either Korean or not, there is no yellow spectrum in between.) During the wait, one of my brother in law's buddies, R., went outside looking for a bar to hang in while we waited. He went across the street to the liquor store, where he asked if there was a bar nearby. Apparently, the guy looked at him with a quizzical expression on his face, and replied: "Next door?" R peered out, then came back in to ask: "Where?" The liquor store guy replied, "Right next door. Flanahan's." Then, apparently, the guys added grimly: "Don't get sucked in." So we go over to Flanahan's. Now, I notice on Yelp that just about every bar is described as a "dive bar," even though most bars thus described are not. Most of them are just hipster bars specializing in the illusion of diver bars. In contrast, Flanahan's is a dive bar. It's cramped, sort of dirty, and you can tell that all the patrons are (a) all regulars, and (b) all alcoholics. And do you know why you get "sucked in"? For exactly the same order as at the surf bar above, we were charged $12. If I lived in the area, I too would live in this bar. The decor is minimal. It might have once been an apartment, or a garage. There is absolutely no frill, not even the vaguest attempt at decoration. There was New Year's confetti on the floor, four days after New Year's. Since all they had on tap was PBR and Stella, I have no idea why anyone thinks this place is Irish. They should call this place simply "Happy Hours 24/7" or "Grad Student Lounge." In any case, we went and ate our Boon-dae jiggae, which was just all right, then came back to Flanahan's for more drinks. I got into a conversation with a carpenter in his sixties with whom I had a cigarette outside. When I asked him, "Do you live around here?" He replied, "Yeah. Right there"--pointing at a pick-up truck parked in front of the bar. "Where?" I asked, dumbfounded. And he replied, "In my truck." Like I said already, I can see that. read more

I am amazed when I visit an Irish pub I have never heard of in the Sunset District. Hanging out with some debate08 friends last night, we went to Flanahan's for a "Shot". I don't really do hard liquor so I drank the shot. It was a chilled Jaegermeister from a very high tech machine designed for all the aficionados. For me sometimes the divier the better. This a tiny divey bar filled with a regular cast of characters, I love it. There's lots of Irish folk in here, but it is the sunset after all. But it's nice to hear the accent I grew up around. And once the regulars have a couple of drinks in them you can be sure you'll hear a story or two or even have someone buy a drink for you. It's easily missed if you've never been here before but a great little bar, with friendly bartenders, to have a drink in while waiting for a table at Toyose across the street. read more

Flanahan's is one of those "fly under wire" establishments. You can live, eat, and pub-crawl in the city for the better part of a decade without stumbling on this place. First off, it's location at 45th and Noriega strays pretty far away from the beaten path. Although it looks like a pub from the outside, it lacks the usual neon signs and other external lighting that normally indicate a drinking establishment is open for business. Once inside, Flanahan's doesn't look like anything more than a room to drink in. The place is small and rectangular in shape. The bar, stools, and about three feet of walkway space take up the 75% of the available square footage. An open area in the back is too small for a pool table, but hosts a video game that looks like it pre-dates the Reagan administration by several years. What it lacked in size, it didn't make up for in character. The time-honored look of aging that can't be faked was present, but in truth it looked a bit more worn-out than broken-in. The windowless bar is completely devoid of natural light, and an odd chicane-style entryway blocks what little sunlight might creep in when patrons enter and exit. Ever read Plato's "The Allegory of the Cave"? ( http://faculty.washington.edu/smcohen/320/cave.htm ) I felt like one of the released prisoners during my stay at Flanahan's... The barmaid was off attending to something, and I was about grab some grub at a Chinese take-out place that was 50 yards up Noriega Street. But alas, the sight of a crock-pot on a table in the rear suggested that complimentary chow might be available. I asked the barmaid about the crock-pot, and got something of a curt response....Chinese food it is. Fifteen minutes later I'm back, Chow Mein and Fried Rice in hand. I ordered an Anchor Steam to wash it down, and chatted with a dreary soul nursing a highball. The crowd seemed chatty...but insular. Ever walk into a place and feel like you've just invaded someone's living room? That's the feeling I got at Flanahan's. Come the end of the Chow Mein and the bottom of my glass, things didn't seem to be improving much. I took a quick look around at the regulars, the dingy surroundings, and the adjacent patron who wasn't getting any more interesting....then left a tip and headed for the door. I could sense a ethos, a culture, and a code of being that existed beneath the insularity.....but the time I'd spend and the hangover I'd inflict on myself while trying to dope it out just wouldn't be worth the effort. read more
