I feel very dissapointed with Bashall Barn, what a wasted opportunity that place is !!!…read moreBrilliant location, superb building and very nice in general but i felt the the prices in both the shop and cafe/restaurant were way too high. A poor range in the shop was a let down, especially gift lines (please have a look at the barn in Scorton). The new building is very impressive and fits in well to the area, but seems a bit cavenous and un-cosy. And finally why oh why are they not doing a full range of ice cream sundaes (banana splits, nickerbocker glories etc) The kids only just enjoyed their 'run of the mill ' cornets !

An excellent selection of wines and, of course, great beers and ales having an onsite brewery. Friendly service and lovely views of the Lancashire countryside. No, it's not cosy - it's a farm building! But full of character. Just have tea/coffee and try the selection of delicious cakes and pastries - sit and watch the cows in the adjoining barn. I enjoy the antiques and rocking horses on the mezzanine - always taking home a very reasonably priced scarf or piece of jewellery. The shop has an excellent choice of homemade frozen meals and some small gifts. I also always take home a meat and potato and/or steak pie and some of their bluebell soap.

Found this farm shop and cafe by pure chance and it has quickly become one of my favourite places…read moreto eat a small snack or meal at. The farm shop is quite small but they sell their own beef (mince, steaks etc), lamb (chops etc), eggs, veg, pies (beef and cheese and onion), sausages as well as local preserves and chutney. Their main business is their cafe, which has a fantastic selection of small snacks (sandwiches, tea cakes, homemade soup, cream scones etc) to larger meals including salads, all day breakfasts, homemade beef and lamb burgers and daily specials. The food is all either from their own produce and meat at the farm or locally grown and sourced when possible. You can taste the difference and all the food is fresh and tasty. Their selection of cakes is fantastic, all home made and yummy. Last time I went they had crumbles, fruit pies, chocolate biscuit cake, sticky toffee pudding and many more I can't remember. But the one thing that I adore the most about this place is their own homemade ice cream! It is the best ice cream I have ever come across, it's not overly sweet and the flavours are great quality. The choice is huge and changes nearly every week but they can include: cherry and yogurt, strawberry cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding, hot cross bun, double chocolate chip, chocolate mint chip, strawberry, toffee fudge, sherry trifle, grandma's special (sweets perfect for kids), farmhouse vanilla, cookies and cream, liquorice... the list goes one. They also do sobets. As well as this huge selection you can buy cakes to take home, anything that's in the cake counter as well as homemade scones and cookies. It has a large outdoor area for kids to play with lots of toys and slides while adults can sit nearby in the sunshine watching the nearby cows and sheep in a field. The whole place just has a wonderful, friendly feel. Only caution I would suggest is if like me you don't have kids and like a bit of peace and quiet, either go early (before 12pm) on weekends and avoid on bank holiday Mondays as it gets very busy with families.

Also (quite worryingly) after after pouring some sauce on my burger and chips, I noticed some of the condiments which were served with the meal were past the 'use by' date. I mentioned this to the staff who looked surprised and went off to check the rest of their stock but didn't offer an apology or replacement.

There is a charge for the open farm and I think they also charge for the play area (though I'm not absolutely certain about the play area charge). The farm ticket is £15 for a family of 4 or alternatively £5 per person with no reduction for children over 2 years. I didn't visit the farm or play area as my interest was in the farm shop. The shop is more of a deli than a traditional farm shop with lots of up-market and consequently pricey products; chutneys, jams, cakes, artisan pastas, olives and much more adorns the shelves and there is a butcher's counter and a cheese counter too. I visited soon after they had opened one morning and unfortunately the butcher's counter was only partially stocked and there was only a small range of fresh vegetables on offer too. I bought a jar of delicious spicy mango and ginger chutney and one or two bits and bobs including milk and cheese. I'll definitely return to visit it again when I'm next in the area. It is only a short walk from the Lancaster canal (Tewitfield is the terminus of the canal) and as there is no local shop at Tewitfield it is handy for boaters moored there to pick up milk, bacon, sausages and of course burgers for the ever popular canalside barbecues! I would have given it 5 stars but I thought the charge for the Open Farm seemed a little pricey, perhaps I'm just behind the times with the pricing for these sort of things though! :-) Hopefully the Wine Store will also be open on my next visit as I was a little early for that too on this occasion.
