The Flashdance has a sixth sense about reading the crowd and playing music that makes the crowd want to dance. Instead of playing one song that gets everyone on the dance floor and another one that gets them off just as quickly Michael keeps the momentum going seamlessly. What I loved the most was I was able to give him a few songs that I wanted to hear and tell him the vibe I was looking for and he took over from there. No song list required. If you do want a particular song, make sure you let him know which version you want. You can completely trust his taste and skill. Everyone was thrilled with the music and had such a great time. He travels as well. Our event was in San Francisco. All the arrangements were done by email, Michael was quick to respond, professional and easy to work with. I hired him along with our labor of love to photograph and sharkpig to do the cinematography. It's a talented group of friends if you are able to hire them together. If you're looking for "the best" wedding DJ, Michael is it. He may also be simply the best party DJ. Michael managed the music for dinner and dancing at our wedding and crushed both events. The dinner music he selected alternated between mellow, spunky, and classic - but was understated and perfectly suited to the location. And well, the party was just epic. Michael had everyone on the dance floor instantly and no one left until the last song. (Though our guests continued to beg for an encore.) Additionally, people from every age had a good time. The dance floor was filled with people ages 10 to 70, with everyone breaking it down. My 10 year old nephew has declared the event, "the best night of his life." I have to agree. May I say that this review is LONG overdue. We got married in April, and I can safely say that it was the most fun that I've ever had at a wedding (I might be a bit biased) thanks mostly to the musical stylings of the Flashdance. My husband is a musician, so the music was paramount; Michael came highly recommended by 2 of my clients and once we visited his website we knew that we HAD to have him for our wedding. We gave him a random sampling of the type of music that we like but really gave him free reign because he's the professional. He incorporated a lot of our musical tastes into the dinner portion of the evening and wowed us during dancing. Nearly all of our guests stayed until the moment that the house lights were turned on and called for an encore, which Michael obliged. We have had lots people (including several who weren't at our wedding) ask us for our dj's info. I cannot say enough great things about Michael; he was fantastic and kept everyone (our friends, our parents' friends, and ages in between) on the dance floor the entire night. Right after I got engaged, one of my coworkers came up to me and said a hearty "congrats," followed immediately by "you have to check out the Flashdance." We're so glad we did, and are still getting compliments two months later on how great the music was at our wedding. Michael + our DJ, Smiles Davis, were great to work with and realized exactly the kind of musical vibe we were hoping for at our wedding. Smiles was a total rockstar -- reading our mix of guests and building the perfect mix to blend the different age groups, backgrounds and relationships to get everyone moving and fluid on the dance floor. They also helped with rentals, setup, etc on the day of. My husband and I got married in August 2017. We began looking for a DJ a year prior. Our photographers (Kappen Photography - check them out!) referred us to The Flashdance DJs, specifically DJ Matthew Rubino, telling us that of all the weddings they've shot, Matthew was by far the best they've heard. When you're planning your wedding, you definitely have to discuss ahead of time what takes priority, which for us was photography and the DJ. We visited their website, watched all their videos, and were immediately in awe. It was obvious they were passionate about creating amazing mixes and experiences. The way their music transitions from one song to the next is seamless, creative, and, for lack of a better word, INSANE. They have an incredible talented bunch. It was also nice that their website offers so much information, such as an FAQ, playlists, a gallery of photos/videos, and a brief biography of the DJs. It did not take us long to decide that Matthew had to be part of our special day. We emailed them and communicated mostly with Abby, the production manager. She helped answer all our preliminary questions and then processed our booking. We then connected with the DJ, Matthew Rubino, who got to know us and about our wedding a little more. He explained how he wanted us to create a short list of about 20 songs that meant the most to us. We knew there would be essential songs, such as our first dance and entrance, but for Matthew to have the ear, patience, and skill to "feel" the couple and crowd is something truly meaningful and thoughtful. Although we submitted just a tad over 20 songs, Matthew ended up playing all of them at the wedding plus the songs that he knew would please us and our guests based on our style of music. We got so many compliments from our guests. Not to mention, he doubled as an MC and wasn't corny nor over-the-top. Instead, he was exactly what he described to us over the phone - an enthusiastic minimalist. Even though there was one minor kink that we had to figure out in terms of our venue and set-up, both Abby and Matthew communicated with us, our wedding planner, and our venue very professionally and in a timely manner. Matthew was even kind enough to visit the venue on a separate day by himself to check out the space and equipment, and making sure that everything would run smoothly logistically. Abby and Matthew made some recommendations but were never pushy. In the end, everything worked out just the way we envisioned. Heard a lot about The Flashdance and the associates before we booked them for our wedding. They were really helpful in coordinating our needs for music outside during dinner and having a mic for speeches, announcing things and getting the party started inside. Everyone danced up a storm! I had special songs for them to play for our first dances with dad and mom and unfortunately they mixed them up- not a big deal- but attention to detail is important of course. I would have preferred more old school mixes but I sort of trusted them to read the crowd and people had a great time. All in all, I was pretty satisfied and would recommend them. read more

Other than the decision to marry each other, picking the Flashdance as our wedding DJ was the best decision we made during the whole wedding process. His music choices were perfect, the dance floor was packed until the very end of the night, and Michael's energy was contagious to all of our wedding guests. I cannot recommend Michael from The Flash Dance enough. If you asked me, or my groom (I guess he's my husband now!) or my family, they would all tell you that hiring Michael was one of the best decisions that we made during wedding planning. Music is really important to us as a couple, and we're big dancers, so we wanted our wedding to be an epic dance party, and Michael gave us just that. We were married in June 2014 at the ACE Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs, California, but we're from Connecticut. It is a testament to how different wedding planning is nowadays that we never met Michael in person or attended one of his weddings before ours. I found him online as he's one of the most blogged about DJs on the West Coast, and he had done a bunch of weddings at the ACE that were featured online. I checked out his website, which is fantastic, and features a bunch of event recordings. In particular, he had posted one wedding at the ACE (cocktail hour and three hours of dancing) and, after one listen, we knew we wanted to hire him. We reached out to Michael and were pleased to find that he's just as cool via email/phone as you would expect him to be. Super chill and laid back, which is greatly appreciated during the stressful wedding planning process. Our wedding was absolutely fantastic. He lived up to all of our expectations. The first hour of dancing was killer. Some of my favorite memories from the night were during this part. Dancing with my daddy to oldies and the always iconic "Shout." Michael did his awesome throwback classics...all of the good oldies, which is my favorite. The entire crowd, even Grandma, was up dancing. Then he transitioned into more contemporary stuff, which was great for our friends. At some point during the evening, one of our friends (who is difficult to impress) came up to us to tell us that he had thought that everything was recorded, and that he couldn't believe that Michael was doing all of the scratching and mixing himself. The dance floor died out a bit around the middle of the night (everyone had been dancing for two hours so wanted a break to eat dessert) but we stayed on the dance floor the entire night. The last 45 minutes of dancing was epic. Michael got everyone back on the dance floor and pumped, asking all of us to get super close to the DJ booth like a house party. This helped to make the bigger venue space at the ACE feel intimate and cool since we were a smaller group. He ended the night with one of our favorite mixes of his with Jay-Z and Al Green, which was literally perfect. And the last song was "Bump and Grind." Yes, that happened. And it was fantastic. I've read a few reviews online that mention that Michael is pricey, which might be fair compared to other wedding DJs, but he's also stupid talented. He's the Human Jukebox, so I think he's worth every penny. If you want to make music a priority for your wedding, I definitely say Michael is the man for the job. Also, he packs a big punch. I would say he was much better entertainment than many of the wedding bands that we've seen at big venue NYC weddings that we've attended, without the band price tag, so in that way his pricing is actually really reasonable. So, again, I highly recommend Michael. If you want a DJ that you can micromanage and tell what songs to play all night, don't bother hiring Michael. If you want a DJ that will come up with creative mixes and always keep you on your toes the whole night of your wedding, Michael is the guy for you. He will not disappoint. read more

I didn't think it was possible for Michael to exceed our expectations, but he did. He DJ'd our wedding last weekend and was LIGHTS-OUT. We are honestly trying to find another reason to book Michael again (can we have a DJ at a baby shower? 30th birthday? anything!) Best money we could have spent. He plays those songs that you've heard before but don't have on your playlist/aren't sick of (do I know this from a movie? My review is also long overdue! We were married May 2012 in Tulum, Mexico. Our wedding had a ton of glitches and complications was incredibly stressful in the months leading up to it, but I must say that The Flashdance was in no way a contributor to those stressors! Both Smiles Davis (our DJ) and Michael Antonia (proprietor and head DJ-not sure what else to call him!) were so so wonderful to work with. Smiles was AMAZING and I had every single guest at our wedding come up to me and say " This is the best wedding DJ ever" So true! Not only was she super rad and created the perfect soundtrack to our day, but she's incredibly lovely and easy going and so great to work with. She even got my stuffy aunts out on the dance floor! In fact, I'm pretty sure she got everyone on the dance floor. Both she and Michael are the perfect mix of professional and a real human being who understands that stuff happens (like when you have to change venues at the last minute) and works with you to make sure everything works out. In the midst of all the chaos, I forgot to send Smiles MP3s of all of our special songs (the songs we chose to first dance to etc). I thought that I could just download them from Mexico since I did'n't have my laptop with me, wrong! Neither Amazon nor iTunes would work from Mexico- something about fraud, I don't know- and I was totally freaking out the night before the wedding. Michael saved the day by downloading from the US and zipping up everything and getting the songs to us just in time! I am so grateful for the opportunity to have worked with both of them to make our wedding day even more incredible. Smiles even sent me a playlist of the entire day after we got back from our honeymoon. Have I convinced you yet? They are the best. Hands down.
