It's a very pungent smell. I remember watching the Food Network one day & I will never forget this message from a food scientist. "A fish store should never smell like fish". When you think about it, it makes absolutely sense. Once you smell fish that means it's no longer fresh. I also know this to be true because a place I go to for my steam fish has NEVER smelled like fish when you walk in. I have no idea how shoppers deal with that smell. Only the wild salmon is $7.99 per pound, all other fish fillets were $5.99 per pound. Almost all of them were wild and not farmed as well. They also sell live carp at $4.99 per pound, but no shellfish or six plus legged creatures. Though I don't appreciate the fishy smell, I have mostly tasted fresh quality from my purchases. Salmon, Black Bass, and Tilefish are some of my favorites. The only item that has been a letdown was the Atlantic Cod, which has a slight ammonia smell. Jury is still out, but I will continue to give this shop chances and hope that was just a one time thing.
