It's a lovely stop along the outdoor Buchanan Street pedestrian mall. With four levels, lots of retail, a few restaurants, and one great chocolatier, Princes Square Shopping Centre is worth a few hours of shopping for the ladies on vacation in Glasgow. The facility is just steps from the St. Enoch subway station on the Inner Line if you need a reference to the metro stops.

Granted,…read moreI don't actually do much shopping here but it is nice for a place to take cover on a rainy day and browse the shops. This is an upmarket shopping centre which has more expensive high street shops like Reiss, Ted Baker, Vivienne Westwood and Cos (which I'm still yet to check out!). The centre is certainly decorated to match the crowd it's looking to attract - glitzy, glam and always clean and tidy. I like the size of the centre as well - it's very dinky but still has lots of shops and is easy to navigate. There's also a host of restaurants, bars and cafés but I'll be honest - I've not visited many of them. I ate at Barca probably 4 years ago and also one of the places on the bottom floor but I think that's changed hands. One down side is that if you are dining at a restaurant on the lower level, parents will tend to let their kids run riot in the centre circle which can be a bit of a mood-killer. Princes Square doesn't have a car park due to its location but it is really close to train and subway. If you do really fancy driving, probably St Enoch or Mitchell Street are the closest car parks.

It's quite possible to spend over an hour just browsing through these things before you even make a start on your shopping. This, however, tends to make the overall shopping bill far more expensive as it's almost impossible to progress to the foodstuffs before you've half-filled your trolley with things you hadn't set out to buy in the first place! I therefore prefer to shop in Morrisons across the road, however this is an excellent store and well worth a look if you've got time to browse.

Unfortunately, Herself had the inside track on this flyby, and before I could do anything I was unceremoniously yanked into the shop as she had been seduced by some trinket in the (admittedly very attractive) window display. Before five minutes had passed, she had grabbed several items from the clothes rail by the door and was heading rearwards to the changing room to try them on, while I mooched around like the long-suffering husband I am, trying not to look like a shoplifter as I browsed the goodies on display. Both the ladies on duty were very chatty and friendly, which makes all the difference in these small gift shops - although the sample dish of tablet on the counter also helped it must be said. They have a great selection of Scottish- and Glasgow-themed knick-knacks on display as well as more generic items, so you'll have no trouble in finding a gift for that special person in your life. However, although I was impressed with several items and earmarked them for future gift purchases (I particularly liked the hanging jam jar lights), on this occasion I managed to escape with my wallet intact. Not so my good lady, who came away feeling very pleased with herself and her purchases.

You'll also find a whole lot of decorative signs with quotes such as "The best women don't have hot flushes - they have power surges" and "The man who says something can't be done shouldn't talk to the woman who's doing it." You never know when they might come in useful.... The shop is nicely decorated - all white with clear cut lines - and isn't so stuffed full that you can't see what you're looking at. The man behind the counter was also really friendly. All in all, a perfectly pleasant little gift shop. There's a lot of the higher standard Scottish souvenirs available here - as Katie said, those T shirts with Scottish slang printed on them, coasters with the same, some Burns ornaments. But there were some more unusual curiosities that I have never seen before - wooden pebbles with Burns script engraved on one side, some mugs with Glasgow buses through the ages on them - perfect for someone who has lived through the evolution of Glasgow from its days of ship industry and trams to now. There are some offerings in here that would be a nice touch to a birthday as they would take you on a nostalgia trip. There's a large section of this shop dedicated to Scottish made candles, which all smell delicious, and a large selection of hand crafted jewellery for very reasonable prices. The shop keeper was friendly and receptive and this shop has more to provide than merely Scottish themed gifts. I went in there with my wife expecting to look around, spend nothing and walk away. I wouldn't say that there's something for everyone in the store, but there's definitely plenty for most people and the only danger from going in is to your wallet. The staff are...well, I've learned to lower my expectations of staff in retail outlets these days, but compared to some of the shops I've visited recently they're more than adequate and moderately helpful. The manager of the store, however, is brilliant, and more than happy to put things aside for you if they're not in stock when you visit so you can pick them up next time you're in. Fifteen years ago Byres Road was full of individual wee shops like this; today it's all coffee emporiums and charity outlets. I discovered Owen Bissett when doing my Christmas shopping in December. I'm so glad I made that decision. The place is a veritable Aladdin's Cave of jewellery, bijoux, craft wares, designer knick-knacks and generally precious things (preeeeccccciouuusssss!). I soon found a lovely bracelet and necklace combo that my sister was delighted with, and would probably have ended up spending a lot more than I wanted to had not common sense kicked in. There's such a wide range of really unusual things in here, it is ideal if you're looking for that 'special gift' or just want a thing of beauty for yourself. I think my favourite items were the glass bowl sculptures with the natural wood stands - these large thick glass works appear to have been melted and poured onto driftwood or tree-branch tripods, so that they have flowed into the perfect shape for the support. I have no idea what I would use one for (and I couldn't afford one anyway), they were just lovely pieces of craftsmanship. A definite thumbs-up for the most original and unusual shop in Hyndland Street, if not the entire West End. Check it out - you're sure to find something you like.
