Worth the extra cost, and remember that these will not be picture-perfect ears because no pesticides are used. Snap off or cut off the top if you find a little worm and remember that this is what you do in exchange for natural produce. *Watermelons are addictive. Scrumptious! *Cantaloupe: sugar-sweet. Grab it when they get it, otherwise you'll miss them because they sell fast! *Red potatoes are WAY better than what you'll get in the grocery store. These reds make hands-down the best mashed potatoes you will ever eat. *Tomatoes (either from their farm or other local farms): nothing like what you get in any grocery store. These ARE tomatoes. *Squash: zucchini, butternut, acorn, gold bar and others. The flavors explode in your mouth! *Eggplant: the regular or Japanese (when they have it) variety has the most distinct flavor whether you're making parmesan, grilling it or frying it. *Greens: kale and other greens. Super tender! *Cabbage: makes the best coleslaw you will ever eat. Stock up on local honey before the end of summer, too. Honey lasts forever, and they will be sold out come August. This is definitely the place to stop if you are looking for high quality watermelon, especially of the black-seeded variety. This kind of watermelon is hardly ever sold in Houston supermarkets these days. In my opinion, the produce sold here just looks better than the offerings in most grocery stores. The varieties of squash seem more plump and fresh. Part of the haul from the latest trip to Dilorio: Yellow Onion, Russet Potatoes, Zucchini, Ginger, Yellow Squash, Cherries, a Mango and a Peach. The peppers and greens looked good, and I was happy to see sacks of Black Eyed Peas in the freezer section. There are seeds, plants and flowers placed outside and near the front of the store. Our family regularly purchases nice red home grown tomatoes, okra, corn on the cob, green beans, fresh summer peas, yellow squash and red potatoes. My hubby always enjoys the summer melon selections. They hire & retain Klein High School students who are polite and respectable (no body art, nose rings or piercings, foul language, colored hair or brow hitches) who are mostly college bound. The students are generally delightful, informative, mature, helpful and garnish a memorable experience for such a family oriented business and community. The market provides an open air environment with no smoking or vaping which is nice. It is not fancy and is typical of a farmer's market establishment. The prices are fair and reasonable which is the reason they've been in business for years.
