Training with the Harris hawk before our walk
    Casey K.

We experienced the Hawk Walk with Jack Hubley earlier this year in mid-March. The Hawk Walk is the next step of immersion into Falconry, starting off with a review of the history of falconry and technique, followed by a walk around the Hotel Hershey with one of the several Harris Hawks they have, the hawk flying and jumping treetop to treetop, coming to the visitor's gloved hand when called. Truly an awesome experience as the hawk dives out of the tree and silently comes to controlled stop, perfectly perched on your hand. (you'll have to be prepared to hold bits and pieces of prepared rodents and birds in your leather-gloved hand for them to eat when they get called in to you hand) Before the walk, during the history lesson, youll get to meet several Harris hawks, a Peregrine falcon and a Golden eagle. It was neat to see them up close before seeing them in action. Arrive and check in at the hotel main desk, sign in, and get taken down the falconry area. Experience is about 2 hours. Group size is 2-4, excluding the staff, and depending on how many people sign up that day. We had Jack all to our selves, so we were each able to call the hawk to our hand 6-8 times over the course of the walk. They take your email address at check-in and will send you 10-12 pictures taken by the staff from the end of the walk so even if you dont bring your own camera youll have some pictures to remember the experience. You are able to take your own pictures and videos. Highly recommended for those interested in falconry & hawks, or as a gift experience for those that have done and seen it all! Reservations required, Winter/Spring times only, so check dates on website.

Hershey Hotel along with Master Falconer Jack Hubley put on this unique birds of prey experience! And boy did we learn a lot about the birds and enjoy the experience of having a Harris Hawk land on our gloved hand from flight. We felt safe with Jack's vast experience. He made this such a fun and interactive experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Such a great experience and wonderful gift for Christmas for the person who needs nothing, my father-in-law. I apologize I cannot recall our guide's name, but he was a young man who was very knowledgeable and with a good sense of humor. Once in a lifetime experience!:)

I have wanted to try falconry for a while so we looked for somewhere we could try it. First, you meet up at the Hotel Hershey and take a bus to the site. (They are going to be moving the falconry closer to the hotel, but for now it is down by Chocolate World). Once you arrive on site, we were given a very brief history and then walked over to the cages to meet the birds. Specifically we were introduced to Thunder and Racer (Harris Hawks), Comet (Peregrine Falcon) and Bliss (a golden eagle). Bliss is an educational bird and is rarely flown, but was incredible to see up close. Bob (one of three possible instructors for the program) took us over to the field and did a brief demonstration to show us how Racer flies and hunts. He gave us more history and then offered anyone who wanted to try the opportunity. The person was given a thick leather glove and a bit of dead mouse for Racer to come to. He would glide in as soon as your arm was in place (sometimes earlier and then would past you waiting). He landed on your arm (it was light and not at all squeezing your arm or anything) and you could pet his chest til he had enough. Bob took pictures of everyone when it was their turn. The Hotel Hershey even emailed the pictures to us that evening. You of course are welcome to take as many pictures as you want and to get as close as you want. While our class didn't have many young kids, Bob said he has had children as young as 3 years old catching the hawks during the class. We had a great time playing with the birds and I'm already thinking about when I can go back and do it again. Bob even told us about the process of actually joining the growing falconry community, which requires both state and federal wildlife permits and the ability to catch your first bird to hunt with.

Unfortunately, we had a rude interaction with staff that took away from what could have been an even better experience. The encounter happened in the reptile area, specifically with the staff member handling the baby alligator. He instructed everyone who wanted to pet the alligator not to touch its head or body and to only touch the tail. My 6-year-old son, who was simply curious and genuinely interested in learning, asked why he couldn't touch those areas. Rather than taking the opportunity to educate a curious child, the staff member responded, "Because I said so." As a parent, I found that response disappointing. One of the wonderful things about places like Lake Tobias is that they provide children with an opportunity to learn about animals and nature. A simple explanation such as, "We don't touch those areas because the alligator could become scared or react defensively," would have answered my son's question while turning the moment into a learning experience. While we had a great time overall, I hope management considers providing additional training on customer service and, especially, how staff interact with children and families. A little patience, kindness, and education can make a huge difference in a family's experience.

This park does have some things to offer, and it is a viable destination during corona time. Parking in the "rapids" (I discerned nothing approaching white water on the lazy stream running by) is free, but yields a significant uphill climb up stairs that look like they might lead up to Shelob's lair. The park lives up to its name. If you're looking to shed some corona pounds, the trails are not long, but the changes in elevation make for a workout. The most picturesque rock outcropping challenged my fear of heights and I got the best shots I could. A wetland on the other side was a nice change of pace. I'm not a huge fan of parks that have different sites under one name, but in this case, the satellite Rocks Park sites, including Hidden Valley and a waterfall both to the north, provide a combined experience which makes the drive more worthwhile. I got a couple of hours of hiking out of the main location, but a solid half day including the other two sites, so if you're going to drive up here, you might as well check everything out.

Had no trouble parking at what I assume is the Rapids Parking Area prob 0.1 miles down from the Park HQ. The spot I parked at had about 5-6 spots, did not cost $, and there were not many people there that day at all. The tree blazes are well marked and visible with the different colors and there are plenty of signs on the trail for guidance (some of them were a bit convoluted). Well kept trails, with plenty of mossy rocks (true to name) and running next to a river/creek. I'm sure there would be much more greenery and plant life in the spring and summer. For the King and Queen Seat Loop (white trail) specifically: - at the trailhead, turn left to get the whole 3 mile loop experience (turning right leads you straight to the rock/view which isn't very rewarding). At some point you run into the blue loop which you can take for a small detour before coming back to the white trail. - as someone who works out and runs regularly, the loop is easy to mild moderate. Not too much incline. Great for a nature walk with some terrain and nice views. - the view at the King and Queen Seat is great! Hawks also perch and fly around there so you can see them pretty closely! Overall, a very nice park! I would come back again another season when more plants are back to life and also to check out Kilgore Falls close by.

We typically would do their Christmas Train, and rarely got back to Lancaster in the warmer months. As soon as I planned my latest summer trip, I knew it had to be on the itinerary. This place has it all from gigantic slides to gold mining sluice areas to a mini kids village that mine couldn't get enough of from the mini vet office to the drive in theater. It was really impressive. From here, you can make your way up the hill where there is a restaurant, a coffee kiosk with a delicious coconut water cold brew (wild!), and plenty of shaded sections with swinging chairs. You'll find paintball, basketball, skee ball, a pedal cart for the family, launching devices. I mean, there is a lot! The place is large so it never felt overly crowded. Come with water bottles. Even with the shaded sections it gets hot. They have water fountains by the bathrooms.
