Wow... what a gem. The food blew me away, really impressed that they add their own twist on, shows real imagination, and it works.

Lovely coffee that has an aroma that floats out of the cup. The carrot cake was superb, gently spiced with fab icing.

Devon is not on top of its yelp game, so I'm out to review all the places I've been to help it out…read more I've been to Jack twice now, both times on business dinners. First off, you need to call and book a table in advance. You arrive close to your time of booking, but don't plan to eat at that time. You take a seat in the social waiting lounge. A server will bring you menus and get you a local beer while you look over the menu. When you're ready to order, you do so from the waiting area. Once your order is stated by the kitchen, you get a table. This is such a great system for socializing. It's much nicer to sit on a comfy chair in a group versus being stuck at a dinner table. The food is quite delicious, but the menu is very limited. I've had the grilled goat cheese*, a roasted chicken dish, the seasonal vegetable side, and the posh prawn cocktail. All was delicious, but on the last visit I really wanted something light and lean, but they don't have that. I was thinking a pretty simple salad with some grilled chicken. Not an option here. It's a gastropub and they only do that style of food. *If you order the grilled goat cheese as a main you will get 2x the goat cheese and some potatoes. That isn't clear on the menu, but that's what happens. Still, the food they turn out is mostly local and they donate a portion of certain food (I think the fish and chips) to a local charity. It's definitely a great option in the Exeter area. I must leave you with one final note. Although I'm not a fan of sweets, Most of my colleagues and customers order their sticky toffee pudding. It is apparently one of the better ones in the area.

THe lunch menu is very good - the home-made soups and breads are great. The food is very good quality - I didn't get to another pub in the vicinity that was anywhere near as good in terms of quality. It's well worth the effort to come out here if you're Exeter based.

We booked a table for 8 o'clock, and was seated by the window. The restaurant has an intimate and tranquil atmosphere, highlighted by the soothing music in the background. This is not a very formal restaurant, seeing that people were not formally dressed, but I would call it sort of dressy. I wouldn't come here in flip-flops and shorts. The food is absolutely fantastic. My partner found the seafood soup to be one of the best he ever tasted, and I had my "religious" moment during dessert: a brownie with salted caramel ice cream. All in all: good food and good value for money. Though rather expensive, not as expensive as expected. Would recommend this place to everyone who likes good food and a nice atmosphere to go with it.

Went here for a nice dinner the other week and was just blown away by the food. I'm from America,…read moreand over there we constantly joke about how bad British cooking is. This place proved me wrong! I've been gluten-free since March and have found the UK to be extremely friendly towards Celiacs/Coeliacs. The Orange Tree was no exception: the menu even indicated that many of its dishes were suitable for people with gluten allergies and intollerances. I told the waitress I couldn't have wheat, and she pointed out which menu items I could have and withheld croutons from my soup. My dining partner enjoyed the homemade rolls and breads, but I can't comment on them, alas. They smelled good! For an appetizer, I had the White Onion Soup with Devon Blue Gougères, which was delightfully creamy and rich. My dining partner had the Tian of Vine Tomatoes with Baby Artichokes, which arrived in a delightful tower of tasty. For the clearing course, we had the Tipsy Lemon Sorbet (with white port) and the Pink Grapefruit Sorbet. Both excellent. The main courses arrived to our delight: I had the Sweet corn Polenta with Aubergine Involtini (Grilled Sweet corn Polenta accompanied by Aubergine filled with Goats Cheese and sun-blushed Tomatoes, finished with a Red Pepper and Pine Kernel Dressing) since I'd been eating nothing but steak and chicken for the last few weeks and wanted a change of pace. I adore polenta and aubergine (eggplant for other Americans), but I'm not such a fan of goat cheese and raw red peppers. However, the goat cheese was more like brie than feta, and the peppers were cooked to perfection. The pine nuts were lovely, and the polenta was quite crisp. Said dining companion had the 'Orange Tree' Tournedos with Foie Gras ('South Devon' Fillet of Beef, pan-seared and oven roasted, topped with sautéed Foie Gras finished with a rich Madeira and Morel Mushroom Jus and White Truffle Oil). I tried a bit of the steak and the foie gras; both were rich and tender. Love at first bite. Dessert: I had the 'Orange Tree' Crème Brûlée, which was a traditional crème brûlée with vanilla bean and Grand Marnier. My dining companion, not continuing his trend of ordering dishes that started in "T" (though the Trio of 'Orange Tree' Desserts looked tasty) had the Summer Berry Pudding with Raspberries, Red Currants and Wild Strawberries accompanied by Clotted Cream and Honeycomb. Oh, how I adore you, clotted cream. The service was a little slow, but the restaurant's elegant atmosphere and the five or six other tables of rather happy older couples made it a great experience. Perhaps they should switch from elevator music to Sinatra, but all in all, it was a lovely meal and evening at the Orange Tree.
