The salon isn't as high end as Redondo Beach, but it is welcoming with magazines and candy, and there is free parking in the strip mall. Competitive pricing too. I was super excited to go to a salon for the first time. I have natural hair and was looking…read moreforward to finding a stylist who could do natural hair. I needed a trim and conditioning treatment. The stylist then offered to blow dry my hair. I only do that 2 times a year. She assured me that she could do it without heat damage so I agreed. I made my appointment and was told one price, but when it was time to pay, the price was different. The conditioning treatment was really nice on the scalp. My scalp felt clean and revitalized. My only problem was she was ripping my hair out. She was starting from the middle of my hair or the top instead of the bottom. It's super curly so she was fighting it instead of working with it. Then she put me in a contraption for a steam treatment. I was kind of iffy of putting any heat before the blow dry, but went along with it. After the steam treatment she rinsed me and then put me back in her chair to blow dry. Again with the ripping out of my hair. By the time she was done it was huge and puffy and tangled all over again. Then came the trim. EVERYONE in my family prides themselves on their mane. My hair was really long. In a high pony it was still past my shoulders flat ironed, but I had split ends. I knew this. I figured an inch, least likely two at most I would lose just based on what she was showing me. I lost about 4 inches. And it wasn't all even. Then the price went up. I went from one price to a 25$ difference in price even though there was nothing added on or not previously discussed. Two weeks later I washed and detangled my hair. I was so disappointed and defeated to find out I had heat damage, my hair was uneven, and I actually have tufts of my hair missing in spots like it's been yanked out. I had to just cut it all off. I literally did a second big chop. There was no way to fix it or ever wear it down again. If you have natural hair I honestly cannot suggest my stylist. It was my first and last time visiting this establishment. I think it's safe to say I'll stick to my sisters and cousins doing my hair for free with better results.

In this economy I was looking to trade in my $100 haircut for something more manageable and decided to roll the dice with this place. (This spot was less than half the price.) A very friendly gentleman cut my hair and he had a young guy with his hair in process for an old school vintage perm. I showed him some inspo pictures and had a quick chat about what I wanted. I got a quote over the phone and came in with dirty hair since I'm used to getting it washed and cut as a standard. Here they will dry cut your hair and ask if you want an added wash for just a little bit more. (It was still very cheap). Throughout the hair cut he asked questions and gave suggestions. He dried my hair to make it bouncy and was very good at it. I would have liked for him to do a few light touches with the hair dry, but didn't. It was closing already and he had the guy with the perm waiting so i just decided to let it go. In my opinion my hair cut was good, a solid 8/10, but to be fair to them I got SO MANY compliments from people I didn't expect. I like to wash and go without a ton of product and the hair cut was great just air dried versus blow dried. My wavy hair had great body so I appreciated that and felt bad that I was a little critical in my first impression of the cut. I would definitely go back. Why the 4 stars? The owner (who was very nice and knowledgeable) waxed my eyebrows and she didn't put a towel on my shoulders. She put too much wax on the stick and a bunch fell on my freshly cut and blow dried hair and on my jacket She was very apologetic and tried to help get it off as much as she could and gave me tips for when I got home. But it was a huge bummer because it was a new jacket and it was such a preventable/careless mistake. This put a damper on my experience, but I'd still go back but be more vigilant which a customer shouldn't be...but for the price...you get what you pay for and right now paying less is my priority. She has a clean and hygienic salon. When I compare her to other stylists she's the best. I've had a few bad experiences with hair braiders, literally every time I tell them to not braid my hair too tight and "I don't care if the braids slip off next week just don't braid my hair too tight." I don't want headaches or skin pimpling because the braids are too tight. Amber actually listened. Problem solved. Also, I wear glasses. Most stylists would always tell me take them off and I've had a few bad experiences where I thought I was going to have to tape my glasses to my forehead because braids were too close and tight near my ears. Amber asked me questions about how often I wear my glasses. In some instances she insisted I keep my glasses on while she braided near my ears, so she can make sure my glasses fit with the braids. I met with Melody for a consultation about my hair before doing the perm (which I scheduled a couple days later). Call for an appointment. The salon is calming, not noisy or overwhelming because Melody is mostly there alone. She also brings her little chihuahuas who are super cute. My perm: Spiral perm on thick shoulder length hair. Took about 1.5-2 hours just to roll it in the perm curlers! She then soaked it with the perming solution, and it was about another 40-minute ordeal of washing, soaking, waiting for perming solution. But totally worth it! The perm price is $75. For extra solution (which I needed) another $5 was added. Total for an amazing perm - $80. Final thoughts: If you're going from straight to curly hair like I wanted, go for the spiral perm and use the smallest curlers. I used the second size up from the smallest, and my hair is still curly at the bottom, but requires curl cream to get the full effect. I still love how fun it is, 2 months later. And Melody knows how to make you NOT look like a poodle from the 80's.
