I have been coming here since I was a child. I still come back every year and it used to be a family oriented store. They just aren't as friendly as it used to be, and the store shelves are less full. They need to stop selling off their farmland so that there's no more picking of vegetables or fruits. Their high prices used to be justified by the experience when you came, but now it's not worth it anymore. read more

If living in the country means sitting on a bale of hay while munching on pie from a bag, then sign me up! Our friends who live in Big Bend first told us of The Elegant Farmer. Great cheese. Great breads. Great pie (which was featured on Food Network). So we couldn't leave Wisconsin without checking it out. You can't miss this place. Look for the rows and rows of cars (free parking, yay!) and the barn with a big smiley face (this is the main grocery/country store). They've got it all here. Fresh produce-apples galore (if you don't have time to go apple picking in their orchard). Loaves and loaves of zucchini bread, pumpkin banana bread, lemon bread, chocolate almond bread. Homemade granola (apples & raisins, chocolate & bananas). Apple cider-choose from a single serving to a gallon jug. They even have fresh frozen apple cider licks in their frozen section! Barrels of coffee beans (get the chocolate hazelnut!) I lost my husband here because he found their ice cream. You can get a generously large scoop of the most delicious Snickers ice cream I've ever tasted for only $2. Wish I had sampled their new flavor, apple pie in a bag ice cream! There's always next time!...good thing The Elegant Farmer is open all year round=) read more

we've been buying the pies from Piggly wiggly for many years and the size went from a 9" to an 8", so I took a friend to the actual home of The Elegant Farmer and purchased the 9". I was so disappointed to find that the crust was thin...it used to be thick and would flow over the sides of the pan and parts of it would caramalize and you could break pieces off that were soooo delicious. Now it's up there with all of the other ordinary pies.. To me this was their signature element that no other pie had, i couldn't beIieve it is now just like any other pie even though the flavor and the apples are exceptional. We decided to eat lunch there and picked out a slice of cherry pie and apple pie to share. Both of these were terrible, we thought they would be the same as the full size pies! Nope, completely tasteless and the apple had a sickly sweet icing drizzled on to. Why would they sell such an inferior product when they make the best apple pie right there? shouldn't it be a slice of the original? read more

I was recommended to go here by a friend and it was absolutely something I'd recommend to others too! I'd add this to my yearly fall to-do list when in Wisconsin! It was fairly crowded since it was a busy weekend, but we went early enough to beat the complete rush and find a fairly close parking stall. QUICK SUMMARY OF BELOW: 1. Go early, 2. Wear rain boots, 3. Be ready to spread fall cheer :), 4. Get a pie! A friend and I went apple picking. While there were fewer apples than we hoped, it was what we could expect from going towards the end of the season. For just $10 we got a fairly large bunch of apples (around 16 or so) and they were all super tasty! Really enjoyable experience for people of all ages. The fields are definitely a cute place to capture fall pictures, so if you want cute candid photos this is a good place! After apple picking we went to the store. I wanted to buy EVERYTHING from honey to tea, to baked goods and produce. I settled on just some honey and a caramel apple pie. The pie is HANDS DOWN the best pie I have ever eaten and I'm so excited they sell them at a select number of grocery stores in the Milwaukee area year round. WARNING: The fields were VERY muddy when we were walking through and apple picking (rip white vans), so I'd suggest wearing rain boots or shoes you can wash easily! read more

The Elegant Farmer was probably the first farm I was taken to as a kid for picking apples, strawberries, and pumpkins. The store has plenty of sweet treats, but none sweeter than the apple pie baked in a brown paper bag! They're amazing but not inexpensive. As Gregg F. pointed out, the lines are long (so parking can be tricky) and the prices are high. I used to stop on my way to school in Whitewater or on my way home from school to pick up cider or a pie or caramel apple. Now I find there are other options with less congestion. The bottom line is that the goods are still good, so if you're not in a hurry or you time your visit right, you can have a positive experience. I haven't been back in a few years because I've chosen to explore the other options in SE Wisconsin, but that doesn't mean I won't go back again. read more

BEST. PIE. EVER. EVER. EVER. I used to work at a summer camp up in Mukwonago (say that 3 times) and whenever the kiddies would go to sleep we would sneak off to the Farmer (which was literally 1 mile). They are mostly known for their pies (and were recently on Throw Down with Bobby Flay), but they also have homemade jams/jellies and also their muffins are great. Back to the pies (side note: mouth is watering just remembering these)...They are ALL baked in a brown paper bag....that's right. Which aren't opened until you eat it! WARNING: The Apple pie might induce instant drowsiness or bring on a past acid trip. May I also suggest the Carmel Apple Pie, thick sugary, crunchy baked top....ugggghhhhhh. They have a few staples that I know of that are year-round, however they do have some that are just in the summer...A.K.A Strawberry Rhubarb pie...you know who you are you little minx. So I put on a few pounds that summer...who cares. There is NOTHING like this where I live and I was gonna soak it all up. That's right! Side note: You can also order their pies online...but its pretty $$. So if you're looking for a gift for me, now you know what to do! read more

Every year I look forward to the one weekend in October where my friends and I pack up and drive out to East Troy for a day of fun. Apple picking, hay rides, pumpkin patch, cider baked ham sandwiches, caramel apples and the world's best apple pie awaits us. We are never let down. Other reasons to go besides the ones listed above, yeah, I can give you more. How about gourmet grocery store, old fashioned cider donuts, locally grown produce, great chili bowls, and fresh bakery? Look they have a gigantic yellow barn that someone took the time to haul a ladder to and paint a big ass welcoming smiley face on. What more could you desire?? You still want more reasons? Fine, if you help them pick apples in their orchard, like climbing trees and all that fun stuff that you would do anyway, they will give you a free cookie for helping them out. A free cookie people, a reward for running around, climbing trees and picking apples like a kid. I rest my case and you should go. read more

A good place to visit in the fall when it stocks a variety of produce like apples, pumpkins and fresh cranberries, as well as cheese, brats and salami. There is also a good selection of unpopped popcorn--different sizes, colors, and flavors. Can't wait to try popping the one that claims to yield those fluffy round pieces like movie theaters serve. Read the labels if you're looking for local items. Some of the jams, jellies and food mixes are not from Wisconsin. Also, the apples have either a "homegrown" or "good-as-homegrown" label. Origin of the latter was not clear. Pies baked in a paper bag are a thing here and are sold in several sizes. I tried a small apple peach. It was challenging to peel the paper away from the crust. The filling was fine, but the "crust" was thick, hard and overly sweet, somewhat like marzipan in texture. I ate the filling and tossed the crust. read more

I remember coming here a lot when I was little. Good memories of my childhood came rushing back when I went to visit today. Love the smiley barn. Do yourself a favor and buy the English Toffee. The have huge slabs of it for about $11.90/lb. It is so thick and has such a pure toffee flavor. Bought half a pound and it wasn't enough. It's addictive! read more

A place for family tradition! We have been coming here every year since our kids were babies ( 14 years). Such a cool place to spend time as a family. Hayrides through the orchards, pumpkin patch, corn maze, pony rides, and of course AYCE apples! The food is really good: we had pulled pork sandwiches, baked potatoes, and of course Carmel apples that you get to top, and apple cider doughnuts! Over the years it has gotten to be kind of pricey, however it's a family owned farm, and I'll never mind paying a bit extra to help support them. The staff from the orchards to the store are all amazingly friendly and help make the experience great. If you haven't been, go! It makes for a great afternoon! read more

I worked here for ten years! This is a wonderful, family friendly place to visit. The owners are some of the most honest, generous, caring people to work for, and they really take pride and care in what they do... it shows all over the store. Through the years lots of regular, local customers came in for their weekly treats, but we also got people from further distances who would say things like, "I drove from Chicago for your pie," or, "I used to live here in Mukwonago and now I live in [such and such a state], but every time I'm back in the area I make sure I come here!" The pies are what the Elegant Farmer is known for. Make sure you try the chilled apple pie slices (my personal favorite), the pumpkin pie slices (if you're there during the Fall-Christmas season), and oh!! The cranberry walnut pie is amazing! It's not one of the baked-in-a-bag ones, but it's my favorite. They would let us take a free pie home for the holidays, and I always chose that one. It's available fresh during the Fall-Christmas season, but sold year-round in the frozen section. Other must-tries are the raspberry or strawberry butter on banana bread (or the lemon bread... yum), the pot pies from the deli, and the sauerkraut rye bread. read more

I saw the TV show "Throw down with Bobby Flay" where he went up against the Elegant Farmer apple pie so I ordered one. It was very good and close to great but be aware you will pay almost $40 for an apple pie delivered to your door. They do not mark the cooler as "this side up" or "fragile" so my pie clearly got thrown around by the shipping company. I ended up with more of a cobbler as it was pretty beat up. Anyway, it was very good and despite being a mess I really enjoyed it. Worth a one time splurge if youve got the money. read more

Never disappoints. Always delicious pies. Pork sandwiches are excellent. And I personally love their sugar cookies.

The Apple Pie in a Bag was Sugar Overload with barely any apples. So overly sweet not 1 guest at Thanksgiving could eat 1 whole slice. & The pie is in a pie tin w just a bag around it. Exorbitantly overpriced for slot of Crumbly Crust & Sugar w barely any Apples! A Thanksgiving Letdown! read more

Elegant Farmer is our favorite place to go every fall for apple picking. They're prepared for large crowds and no matter how full the parking lot is, it's always possible to find a moment alone in the orchard to snap family photos while picking apples. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming and all of the employees work hard to make sure guests have a good time. I appreciate that there are plenty of options for great photos and lots of activities in addition to apple picking. You can even take the train from East Troy if you're so inclined. The store is small, but packs in a lot of local products, some delicious baked goods, and plenty of sweet treats featuring produce from the farm (pumpkin bread, apple pies, cider, etc.). We also love making a stop at the outdoor cafe area. It's tented and filled with hay bales so you can sit and enjoy a snack with the family. It would be great if there was a healthy option or two outside, but you can also go inside the store to buy a snack and then eat it outside. The pie in a bag is famous, but I'm not really a pie person and didn't appreciate any grand difference between the pies at Elegant Farmer and pies from other great bakeries. I go for the experience and tradition of apple picking with my family, and for that experience, Elegant Farmer gets all the stars. read more

I have been going to the elegant farmer since 1996. There have been lots of changes over the years but it's still an interesting place. The building is a large barn. Ample parking in their private lot. The employees have always been friendly and helpful, even on busy days. They make (and sell) pies in a bag, assorted bakery items, canned items (jelly, jam, pickled veggies, etc), crafts and other food items. My favorite pie in a bag is apple/strawberry/rhubarb. Yes, the toppings can stick to the bag, but that's normal. You can easily peel it off the bag. If you like pumpkin, you must get their pumpkin bars with cream cheese frosting. They typically have free food samples so keep an eye out. In fall they do hayrides and other autumn activities. It's a fun place to stop if you are in the area. read more

After 20 YEARS of going here...I think this year was my last. The prices are excessive and the crowds were pretty terrible. This place is awesome! The store is great with a ton of local made goods, deli items, and an awesome bakery filled with HUGE muffins, famous apple pie, banana bread and cookies to name a few! Across the street there's an apple orchard where you can pick your own apples, take a hay ride and have literally the best donuts you've ever had- apple cider donuts! They melt in your mouth when they're served warm. We also tried their Apple cider and chicken pot pie. All which was delicious. Such a fun place for kids and adults. We were only there about an hour- but I can see how it could be a half day trip if you wanted to experience everything. read more

The pie in a bag is delicious. Deli is nice for lunch. I always stock up on Vidalia Onion salad dressing and corn chowder soup mix.

Their chili, pie and soups are amazing!!! And don't forget to grab a muffin from their bakery. You'll be glad you did!

Look I'm 27, I'm single and I don't have any damn kids. I have no business being here. I felt like a total skeez and made damn sure to carry my 3 year old niece everywhere so nobody would call the cops on the giant weirdo pounding coffee and ogling the pony ride chick. I really didn't think it would take long before somebody asked me to leave. But then something REALLY unexpected happened: I had a lot of fun. If you are looking for excitement you know better than to venture out to Mukwanapalooza. If you're looking for some family fun and serious eats, this is your spot. Apple Pie in a paper bag? Word. Organic bean dip? That's what's up. Pickled everything? Yup. I'm almost ashamed to say that the highlight of the day was the hay ride. Yup. Hay freaking ride. It's about a 10 minute ride through the adjacent apple orchard/junk pile and on this particularly beautiful day was super enjoyable. The staff here is impossibly nice. The dude running the hay ride was cool, but he gets paid to drive a tractor around all day. He is a walking talking country music video. He better be cool. The dude that runs the farm was all over the place: taking kids on pony rides, conducting pie eating contests and recruiting folks for the hay ride. I'm always impressed when the boss does the dirty work. His staff seems to feed off of that. If this place had a bar I would never leave. read more

I love the concept; part farm market, part bakery, part deli. I love the baked ham. I love the local cheeses. I love the pie. And I love walking through an actual silo to enter the place. But I don't love the prices. They are very inflated, especially since many of these items are available elsewhere for cheaper. I also don't love the lack of local products. Take away cheese and Elegant Farmer brand items and there is little local to be found. Considering this is a bit of a tourist destination on the Lake Geneva to Illinois or Milwaukee route, this would be a great place to market fine products like Indulgence Chocolates, Purple Door Ice Cream, Wausome Crackers,Becky's Blissful Caramels, Potter's Crackers, Molly's Bakery and Treat Almonds to name a few. So I wouldn't make a special trip, but if I happen to be in the area it's worth a look, especially if you've never been. read more

PIE IN A BAG IS 5 STARS. Everything else sucks...the service is slow, the staff are less than friendly, the prices are insanely high. I mentioned that to my husband and he said, "That's to be expected in places like this." Well, I didn't expect to have to take a second mortgage out on the house to pay for a small a*s bag of pretzels. I'm so extremely, "meh" about this place. We bought muffins, MEH. We bought bread, MEH. Pie in a bag is the only reason I would return here. read more

This place used to be a family must go to spot. Their friendliness of the staff and family events (apple picking) were awesome. Great pie, and an awesome deli. The place sold to some new owner. Now it seems the prices are high, the service is bad, and the lines are too long to deal with even though the first two things one would think curb that. I guess the business built such a good reputation before changing hands that they are still riding that wave. Now it just seems... commercialized. Something will need to change for me to come back. read more

THE GREATEST APPLE PIE EVER MADE Normally things consumed from a brown paper bag are kind of disgusting...cheap wine, fast food, greasy fries, etc. Not so with the Elegant Farmer's famous Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag. I don't know if it's the bag, the farm fresh apples, fairy dust, or some kind of crack, but this was the best damn apple pie that I've ever had....EVER! The apples are fresh, firm, and just the right mix of sweet and tart. And the crust...this may be the best part. There are are two types of crust, a buttery, flakey bottom and a sweet crumbly top. No wonder Bobby Flay got his ass whooped by these guys on Throwdown! (If I could give a 6th star for this I would. :) ) read more

I enjoyed my walk around the Elegant Farmer's inside building/store. Sadly, the apple orchards were closed when I visited in October 2017, which I thought was strange. I was a very lucky Dad this past Father's Day. Years back, my Sister-in-law and here family moved out to Mukwonago, and a few years later at Thanksgiving, she served us the World Famous Elegant Farmer Apple Pie in a Paper Bag. That's when my obsession started. Naturally when we were invited out for the local Father's Day Parade, I just had to make a stop here. Sure, I can get Elegant Farmer pies here in the city, but they are not fresh, they are frozen, and they cost about $3 more than they do here. The Apple Pie in a Paper Bag is a thing of beauty. I think the reviewer who said it was like a apple pie with a sugar cookie crust was spot on. The apple pie alone is out of this world, but when that sugar crystallizes in that crust, something phenomenal happens. I'm always scraping the crust off the paper bag it's so good. This was my first time in the store and I was pleased to find much more than just apple pies. This store is set up like a little market, complete with fresh produce, a deli, a bakery, an ice cream shop and plenty other food products that originate from Wisconsin. The bakery has plenty of pies in two sizes and many different flavors than apple. I love this little store, even though its a little tough to navigate when busy, it's full of stuff I want to buy and try. It's very easy to go crazy with the credit card here. My day ended with me giving my daughter a ride on one of the giant wooden rocking horses in front. This place is awesome for kids. If you are in this part of Wisconsin, a stop here is a must. This pie is by far the best I've ever tasted. read more

The store is open but no mandatory masks for patrons since it reopened amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. As for the grounds, not much to do outside for families. Inside, the barn/store/deli is designed to get your money with grocery-store-flow-psychology techniques typically found in much more savvy operations like Whole Foods (and the prices are sky high too). As for signature apple pie (baked inside a paper bag), the bag is a gimmick and imparts no value or flavor quality. What you DO GET is a massively over-sweetened sugar filling with a single bite being enough to overwhelm and gag the eater. As well, if the four cups of sucrose per pie isn't enough to instill nausea, the bakers then add so much cinnamon that the apple flavors are COMPLETELY DESTROYED! Everything is pastry laden with oil/lard/butter/fat/sugar and leaves one feeling gross and constipated... AND HERE'S THE CLINCHER FOLKS... Wait for it... A SINGLE PIE COSTS... $59.95 when ordering online... Free shipping?!? Give us a break! Hahahaha! Profiteering pricks aren't worth anyone's time. A pie should be $9.95... so who pockets the other $50? Not you. AVOID THE HYPE and SAVE yourself time, toothaches and money. read more

Although I've lived in the Milwaukee area for more than 75 percent of my life, and my grandparents live in Mukwonago and Big Bend, and I've eaten my share of Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag (TM) purchased from Sendik's, I have never actually been to the Elegant Farmer until this fall. Now that I have a toddler, finding outdoor activities that can stimulate a small person is a big priority, and while apple-picking is certainly something that anyone can do, it is extra fun with children. The store is good - rustic with the expected country vibe - lots of good bakery and specialty items. The orchard is also good, although they lose a few points with me for having all very common/mainstream apples. I guess I got spoiled the last few years at a couple orchards in the Madison area that had more unique apples. Still, any apples straight from the tree taste about a million times better than most store ones, so I was satisfied with the large amount of apples I got for a very fair price of around $25. There was much apple-butter making and canning for several days. This is also a great place for a family outing - as many have pointed out - as they have the apple donuts and cider, the hay ride, and what kid doesn't love picking and eating apples? read more

The Elegant Farmer is a commercialized business that is lost for all the sweet ma and pa joy that every true apple orchard should have. They have a nice market inside the barn, but you have to go with the traffic and it can get pretty crowded. I'd recommend buying a whole pie in a bag to go, rather than getting a slice at the orchard... Unless you love eating pie with your caramel, trust me. Nit picky? But wait, there's more! Crowds, crowds, crowds... And really unpleasant employees. I encountered two nice people working outside around the orchard, but that's it. Every other employee was totally rude. Also, bring your own lunch. The pulled pork sandwiches are overpriced and bland, as is the chicken pot pie. And then let's get to the apples. I don't know if it's a bad year for apples there, but they were not delicious. I can get tastier apples at the discount market, but they're not as fun because I didn't pick them. Sorry, Elegant Farmer, I'm SO sad to say this, but I like your pie and your market and that's about it. read more

We went to The Elegant Farmer as our first ode to fall 2014, and were slightly disappointed. We went on October 5th, and were shocked to see signs stating that their trees had already been picked clean for the season! What? The leaves were JUST starting to change and it was a huge disappointment. You could still go out into the orchard and choose your apples out of bins they had laying around... but at that point why not just buy them from a bin in a grocery store for less money? Everything was kind of an unorganized mess honestly. There were several parking areas, and no one knew anything. Once we were parked we crossed the road to the orchard area and stood in line for the hayride out to the field. Well after waiting in line there, we were told we needed to buy a basket to put the apples in, and that was a different line. We got out of the hayride line and into the first and waited. When we made it to the front there was the sign saying the trees were bare. We got out of line to go into the market instead (of note there was a THIRD line to pay for apples/pie pumpkins). They did have about 30 pumpkins for sale... but they were all pretty rough looking. Once back on the market side there was another line just to get into the store. That went quickly enough, and the store was set like a maze so that it was easy to see everything - high prices and all. There were a lot of snacky knick knacks like rainbow colored popcorn seeds and prepackaged soup mixes. An issue especially was lack of staff. There were over a dozen kinds of apples, and no samples or descriptions. We wanted to make a pie and had no idea what kind of apples to buy - when we asked a staff member refilling apples she said she had no idea... maybe this one? We picked up one of their famous pies, and after one muffin, a half gallon of cider, one pie and a small jar of spices we hit $30. Honestly it just didn't tickle me as much as I'd hoped, and I am still on the lookout for an awesome orchard. read more
