I was just in the area so I dropped by here because I was curious what it had in here. There are garden plots and planters with different things in them that people are growing whatever they choose to grow here such as, tomatoes, leafy greens, flowers, etc. Also it's good to get back in touch with nature to destress, whether it's visiting parks, or planting foods. When planting foods it reminds us to be patient, that things take time (some of our lifestyles have us rushing so much thay we rush even when we don't need to rush. If we rush all the time, when and where will we relax?) When we put our effort into something such as this garden, we appreciate it more and are therefore happier.

This place recently opened a few months ago (the grand opening was on Earth Day) and they already have several folks who are growing some great fruits n veggies! The garden has strict rules when it comes to pets, children and being organic (no chemicals is a must). Most plots go for around 75 bucks a year and obviously the bigger you go the more expensive it is. It is 75 cents per square foot. Be forewarned experienced…read moregardeners-your efforts to educate the largely novice gardeners (including the garden manager who knows nothing about gardening) will go unappreciated. The garden is crowded, with not enough hoses, rude and aggressive neighbors, and gardeners that couldn't spot a native plant if it was right under their nose. The rules are unclear-you'll sign an agreement that says 'no irrigation allowed' and look around to see that not being enforced. This leads to possessiveness around spigots, leaking irrigation, and just general self-centeredness-the opposite of community. I've seen gardeners killing bugs around their plots and raking up the natural leaves that fall from the trees where butterflies leave their eggs. No one seems to know anything about composting and so the compost bins go untended and neglected. Supposedly this is an organic garden, but there is no real knowledge about integrated pest management or how to garden with nature. Add to that the regular drug dealing and drive by shootings (just last month, in fact) that take place...yep, not that great. So glad to be leaving this awful place!

Classes and workshops are held here to teach local residence new techniques in organic gardening and sustainability. I was pleasantly surprised as to the size of the garden. This garden is by far larger than most community gardens in the Sacramento Area. When working in an community garden, one must learn to cooperate with one another, have mutual respect for one another, and to take only what one can use. Any extra food can always be given away to family members, friends, or to the local food bank. It's time to break out the shovel. Happy gardening !

I have been germinating seeds for a long time and my interest in plants extends to the very life sustaining forests of California Sierras. A community garden brings people together, provides a positive resource in the community and gives people some fresh, healthy organic vegetables to eat. Many seniors in our complex get tomatoes, beans, peppers and lettuce from our efforts. We are so happy to have this garden in Vallejo and hope it continues to grow and thrive.

We came on the evening on a Friday, which is perfect for just talking a nice stroll or hike around, but after seeing that they had a bearded dragon (Matilda) and a chuckwalla (Chuck), I knew I had to come back again to meet them. Parking is free and love the wildlife that is around here. Not just the butterflies that I've seen fluttering about but also the coyote that trotted across the lot to cross the street. This is also a great location to find activities to do with the family or with the community. They have a 4 H Club, a community garden that you can sign up for, an entire calendar of events for the month, a Blacksmithing workshop/demonstration, and much more. We were limited on time and didn't get to see the historical buildings or the restored structures, nor was the Blacksmith Shop open, but for our next visit, I'll be sure to check them out. Outside you can meet the alpaca that they have hanging out (freshly shaved for the summer, so it was funny to see the little tufts of hair that they had on their head) and some of their goats too. Now to the highlight of my visit, the Environmental Education Center. Obviously this is meant for kids and families, but I had a great time meeting their animal ambassadors (I didn't ask for them to be taken out, but I'm sure there are events and moments for that) and learning more about them. The staff there are very friendly, welcoming, and informative. It makes me happy to know that the ambassadors that I inquired about were rescues and they have a second chance at life and in educating the community. My favs were obviously Matilda and Chuck, but there are also various snakes, turtles, a toad, fish, tarantulas, and stick bugs. The center also has books, opportunities for hands on observations and journaling for kids, puppets and educational toys and exhibits, and much more. Definitely will come back!

We took the tour lead by the 4H kids and it was pretty awesome learning all the fun facts. I loved seeing the goats and how playful they were. The chickens were a riot and it was so nice being outdoors. There's also trails nearby if you want to take a hike and extend your time being around nature. Definitely will be back there soon to enjoy the place again.
