The 200 year old docks area has been repurposed with the long damaging decline in trade by ship, decline in heavy industry and worst still decline in manufacturing. Look at Germany a powerful powerhouse of manufacturing (unlike the UK, German politicians subsidied some industry which proved smart ) that makes it hugely rich. The UK direction by opportunist greedy political types with no vision, interest or long term planning for 50/75 years let manufacturers go to the wall. This has created a very large service sector that relies heavily on low paid staff that does not produce tangible sellable goods. So the historic industrial port began to lose trade as the ships became larger and couldn't access canals and small docks. Today, it's a fairly large and an impressive shopping and food outlet (service industry) with pubs, wine bars, all the usual suspects trading but the sympathetic design making it stunning. Worth a visit if you are close by and a 15 minute walk from the awesome Gloucester Cathedral that King Henry VIII stole from Catholicism.

Parking is really easy there are usually plenty of spaces.

Now my mother brought me up not to be greedy - but markets have an effect on me, especially plant stalls, silver, faric and leather goods. There is every thing from bongs to veggies, bags to embridery threads, arts and crafts, gosh probably a beer stall too. Most of the vendors are very friendly - I always find plant sellers are on my planet! Some are a little indifferent but at least that's not going to ruin the fun. You don't need to leave lots of dosh behind, browsing is fun. And theres a couple of good pubs just nearby!

However it seems in recent years the turnover of shops has been quite high with shops often opening and closing and being replaced with other shops quite quickly That said its often interesting to see what shop next fills the gaps. The market contains a wide range of goods and the stall holders are always friendly and can answer my questions. There is a stall selling all types of material, the music one, one selling smoking implements and lots more. I enjoy looking round the music exchange one becaus you never know what to expect!

There is a wide range of shops in Emery gate which boasts travel agents, mobile phone stores, a hairdressers, sports shop, opticians, card shop, jewellers and a back entrance into Woolworths. There is also a new tesco store so you can pick up any bits you need without having to go to one of the out of town supermarkets unnecessarily. Plenty of parking available but it does tend to fill up early at the weekends.

There are independent shops such as the pet shop, health food etc. There is Boswells coffee shop in the centre and that makes the whole shopping centre appealling. The large Tesco Metro which took Somerfields place is the end of the shopping centre. The car park to access this centre is below the shopping centre and allows 1 hour parking for 50p. This is the only car park that still allows this. You can wheel your tesco trolley right down to your car and leave it in the car park trolley bay. So 5 stars for this shopping centre.

We were staying across the street at the Future Inn and on the evening we arrived, we strolled over to take a quick peek at the adventures I would be exploring the next day. Much to my surprise, pleasure and happiness, there was a Pret right there as soon as we walked in! Breakfast at the hotel was on the pricey side so we knew where we'd be coming in the morning and we certainly needed to get fueled up for a day of shopping! CC has lots of high end, brand name stores and with even more shops beyond the boundaries of CC, this made for a lovely day of retail therapy. My poor husband... oh well, at least they had an Apple store for him. ;)

This is nothing like your average retail park; most are nearly always home to the usual large chain…read morestores and supermarkets. Okay, so Rubery's has a Morrisons, but it doesn't go overboard on the generic stores (and one supermarket is definitely a necessity for Rubery locals anyway.) At the centre of the park you'll find a Premier Inn, and surrounding that, there's a pub, bowling and cinema. So there's loads of great things for visitors to do, without having to spend too much money on travelling into the city centre everyday of their stay in Brum. However, there are quite a few roads that go through the park, and it's a little bit annoying having to cross each one to go to different store. But the park is home to one of two Empire cinemas in Birmingham, so it's definitely worth a visit to see movies on the big screen (other than at Cineworld or the Odeon) The location of the park is really great too; it's really tranquil and open planned with lots of grassland, so customers staying at the hotel don't have to breathe in the smog of the city centre all day long.
