But don't get me wrong, the centre still boasts a large collection of big stores such as Poundland, WHSmith and Iceland, which are all greatly needed for the Northfield locals. It means that they don't have to travel elsewhere for their necessities. The overall aesthetics of Northfield's precinct are very outdated and generic, however, the actual shops themselves are varied when compared to the usual shopping centres of Brum. It's the independent shops that make the centre different, and there's a great collection of clothes stores for all ages and genders, from the men's shop Little Italy, to the girl's clothes accessories shop Miss Bizybody. I was quite surprised at the actual size of the centre, and expected it to be much smaller for the area (considering that there's quite a few shops on the Bristol Road outside as it is.) The centre is a great find, and is definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

For me it is not the best place to go clothes shopping but it is great for Poundland, Superdrug, Peacocks, Iceland, WH Smith amongst many more. They also have clean toilets which is more than some shopping centres have. It was recently been refurbished also..

I only realised there was a Wilkinsons in Northfield recently but now I'm there all the time as…read moreit's such a good shop and the prices are so cheap. This branch is laid out really well and is a huge store as it sits where the old Sainsbury's used to be in The Grosvenor Shopping Centre. Everything is logically displayed with beauty and body products being together, then just around the corner is the baby goods, followed by the 'ladies' products etc It just makes sense to lay a shop out like this because it means the customer (ie. me!) can always find exactly what they want without having to traipse the length of the store half a dozen times. Prices, as you'd expect from Wilkinsons, are great. Everything the sell in here is at least a few pence cheaper than Boots and places like that, and if you buy all your toiletries in here the savings can be brilliant. I also like the homewares section in this branch, they seem to have a better range of stock than other branches of Wilkinsons and a wider choice for a lot of products. Prices are good here too, I recently bought a large stainless steel swing bin for just £12.99 when similar bins in Argos cost upwards of £30. You can buy decorating products in this branch too, such as Dulux paint and good quality brushes at much cheaper prices than if you went to a DIY shop. I like the cheap DVDs in this branch, I've never seen DVDs in Wilkinsons before but last week saw some childrens films and cartoons costing only 99p. We've just put a DVD player in the baby's room so I stocked up on Tom & Jerry and Flintstones films for her. The aisles are wide in Wilkinsons which means the shop feels bright and airy, there's lots of room to get around once inside. Disabled access is fine, I've seen people using wheelchairs and mobility scooters in this branch with no problems at all.

This branch has just undergone a refurbishment - it looks so much fresher and somehow stocks wider…read moreproduct ranges while still appearing spacious! Wilkinsons offers excellent value-for-money and a large range of home, garden, cleaning, DIY, stationery, beauty, food and seasonal products. You can always rely on them whether you need a new lampshade, bin bags, plastic storage boxes, shower gel or you're just feeling peckish! The new layout is very shopper-friendly with wide aisles and all the aisles/departments well signed, which makes it so much easier to locate what you need in what is a pretty big store. You can also order items in-store from the Wilkinson Plus catalogue that stocks even more products. The store's in Northfield Shopping Centre (formerly the Grosvenor Shopping Centre), which has over 600 car parking spaces, at the heart of Northfield itself, which is easily reached by quite a few bus services. The store's open from 8am - 6pm Monday to Saturday, which is ideal for people who work 9 'til 5 (and longer than most of the other stores in the shopping centre except Iceland). With such a large product range, Wilkinsons is the jewel in the shopping centre's (and Northfield's) crown.

Cut Price Discount Stores is an unpresuming Aladdin's Cave of bargains! This independently run…read morestore is situated directly opposite Aldi Supermarket on Bristol Road, Northfield Town Centre. The inside of the shop is nothing fancy time looks as though it has stood still here for a long time. However, the shop is packed with nearly every conceivable household item you could imagine (excluding furniture and appliances). If you are familiar with Latif and Sons in Birmingham City Centre, think of this shop of a condensed version of the same type of store. Another way of describing it is as 'Northfield's General Store' - everything from kitchenware, cleaning products, garden, diy, computer and automotive accessories are in stock at very reasonable prices. I managed to buy a bunch of last minute Christmas presents here this last year and I had never thought a shop on Northfield could offer such choice, quality and value. The couple who run the shop are lovely too; very friendly. Also, If there is something you are after and they don't stock it, they are happy to source it for you. Often I have bought items from larger stores and supermarkets only to find the same products sold here at a cheaper price. I now usually pop in and check here first if I am after something in particular before shopping around It saves the disappointment! Definitely recommended, especially if you are setting up home and need a local, independent shop to buy the basics!

Domestiks is an ex-catalogue shop in Fairfax which is known locally for its excellent range of…read morestock and fantastic prices. From the outside it doesn't look very big, but once you get through the door you'll soon realise it's a massive shop which holds absolutely loads of stock. The main things Domestiks sells is clothing. It's all well arranged by style and size, obviously because it's an ex-catalogue shop you have to take pot luck of whatever they have at any one time but there are always a very good selection in sizes 8 to outsize. I think the childrens clothes in particular are excellent, there is a brilliant choice in the baby clothes right up to stuff for the more discerning teenager. I regularly pop in to buy my 17 month old daughter some stuff and the items available are of the highest quality and very up to date. The ladies clothes are superb too; smart suits, jeans, jumpers, swimming costumes and summer dresses jostle for space on the rails. Everything is clearly laid out in size order and I find the sizes to be very accurate so I can go in and pick something off the rail and be confident that it will fit when I get it home. There isn't much choice in mens clothing to be honest, but I assume this is because men don't buy so much from catalogues hence less stock returned. My fella did buy a very smart suit from here recently for a works do we had to attend, the suit was marked up as costing £115 in the catalogue but he paid only £40 for it and it's in brand new condition and even had the little plastic clips on the suit jacket cuffs which suggests it hasn't even been tried on! This saving is typical of Domesticks, on smaller clothing items you can expect to save a few pounds but it's the more exclusive items that are most drastically marked down. They also have baskets of socks, tights, underwear and t-shirts which generally cost around £1 - £1.50, it's worth having a rummage through these baskets as there are often some brilliant savings to be found. As well as clothes Domesticks sells a range of homewares, toys and shoes. I personally don't think the shoes are good as they always seem to be very old fashioned and some of them don't really look new. The toys are great though and I often go in before Christmas and birthdays to see what I can pick up for the kids'. Just this morning I went into Domestiks and bought my baby daughter a rocking horse which originally would have cost me £75 but had been reduced to just £25! Bargain, and she'll absolutely love it. You can buy a small selection of watches and clocks here, they are all very nicely priced although I don't really have anyone to buy these things for - my 12 year old is coveting a Playboy clock for her bedroom so I might just go and buy one of those before Christmas. I'd definitely recommend Domestiks to anyone living in South Birmingham who can get to Fairfax, the sheer range of clothes makes this my first port of call whenever I am going clothes shopping because the savings to be had are amazing and the range of clothing is at least as good as any other clothes shop!
