The Eastern is a very nice venue, and it was suitable for our wedding reception. It is very a la carte, so you make it what it is. My family loved the venue and the space. Be warned, the event manager, Emily, is pretty bad at communicating and being welcoming to you. I think wedding venues/managers should make you feel like they actually want your money and care about your event. You will not get that here. It took days to get responses to simple questions, and then when we did get a response, it was a one-word (up to three or five) answer. We often felt like we were bothering them by asking them questions. I thought it was just me, but based on the reviews, this is an ongoing problem. If you don't care about this, then The Eastern is a cool space to have an event. The day-of-staff was excellent! read more

I was very excited to book this venue (because of the look) for my baby shower. Initially, I did feel as though Emily from The Eastern was one of the least excited booking managers I've met with... versus all of the other venues I had visited--she really wasn't enthused at all but I ignored that. After booking The Eastern, I found it EXTREMELY hard to get into contact with the booking manager Emily Kolon. I would email, call, and text and receive a response as soon as days later. It was extremely tacky to me especially after all of the money I was paying to book this venue. I didn't understand why I couldn't ever speak to someone the same day or had to wait to get an answer while planning my event. It's hard planning something when someone is unresponsive/doesn't get back with you for up to 3 days. Besides the unresponsiveness, I found myself entered into a contract where I, admittedly, did not read the fine print (literally one line) saying a beverage package was required. Upon, speaking with Emily and viewing the venue, I was not made aware that the beverage package was required. Which was SO expensive. After speaking with the owner, Scott Rutterbush, he told me he would be able to workout a package with me where I could bring my own drinks that were sealed. However, once the shower was close--that was immediately denied. No accommodations were made. As far as food, they don't have anywhere to store it AT ALL -- though they do have a bar but would not allow me to keep my food stored there. They don't make accommodations for anything at all. A money guzzler. Most venues I spoke with offered a discounted price for the fact that I was having a baby shower versus a wedding, but that did not seem to affect them at all. Don't come here, truly a waste of money before your event has even started. read more

Stopped over to check out the booths on Sunday now at Eastern Market and heard about the Hendrix Gin cocktail truck at The Eastern. On a warm day why not stop in for a Hendrix and Tonic? My first time in the hall and it is a really nice spot. We got there early and as we were leaving they were setting up for a DJ, cool spot! Any events there in the future I will have to peek my head in there. read more

Great place but if you're an Active Duty Service member you'll risk losing your money. If you're a Service Member with a high deployment/mission tempo like myself, STAY AWAY! When my wife and I received information that another undisclosed loacation was in our future, we were shocked to receive the most robotic copy and paste response you could ever expect. In the beginning of our journey with this company we asked if they would honor The Servicemembers Civil Relief act. Emily Kolon stated that she had never heard of it, but would do the research so that she could work with us should this exact moment occur. Rather than provide us with options or honor the Relief Act, she responded with an email so emotionless, you would have thought it was computer generated. So, Service Members like myself--Stay Away. It's not worth losing your money to someone who reassured you that they'd work with you should you have to leave the country due to unexpected deployment or mission. read more

Went to a couple events recently here. Pretty small area. Clean and thankfully they have bathrooms. The event space holds some fun events. The last two included a bar. The staff was decent. I'm not sure they worked for the event space or not. All in all decent space and there's parking right outside. read more

Nice to see a good crowd come and support local artisans. In the holiday market itself there were different artists selling handmade items - hand knit hats & scarves, jewelry, bath salts, print makers. They had a bar where you could grab a drink and walk around. Only thing was the venue was small and poorly lit. Also it was difficult to find. It was around the corner from RJ Hirt store through a blue unmarked door. They had a person in a Santa outfit in front of the parking lot holding a sign, but even she had to take breaks because it's cold outside so not everyone could find it. More artisans were showcasing their items in some of the sheds - baked goods, T-shirt's, hand spun yarn. Nice crowd but hard to move through and could hardly see the items for sale because crowds blocking tables and aisles. read more

If you are considering having your wedding here, I would recommend you stay away. The "event manager" Emily has to be the WORST in the business. Her communication is abysmal, taking numerous days, sometimes weeks to respond to simple questions. Or she just ignores them. I asked for a change to our contract and I STILL have not heard back from Emily. I cannot stress enough how awful she is at her job. Their liquor packages are insanely expensive. Almost laughable. I was told one "off season" discount was available, then having forgot what she told me, Emily tried to offer me a $500 less discount. Needless to say, we did not book here. I am only explaining my experience literally TRYING TO THROW MY MONEY AT THEM! I can't imagine how the communication would be had I actually signed a contract. read more

If you want ANYTHING about your event to go smoothly, do yourself a favor and pick another venue. Emily is THE ABSOLUTE WORST person they have to be running their business. We are in a pandemic that is completely out of anyones control and she is REFUSING to accommodate my needs or refund me my money because she "can't" accommodate me. "The business is already losing out on money." This is already an awful situation and Emily has done nothing but make it worse. DO NOT and I mean DO NOT book this venue for ANYTHING!!! Saturday night was better than all right. it was GREAT. Family member was married there. Terrific venue. Highly recommended.

The venue is beautiful, but the stress working with management is not worth it for the "look", there are other better options. Below is an excerpt (shortened to meet character limits) from my email response sent directly to the owner after he reached out to me for feedback on our experience (spoiler: they didn't respond to the email)... Hi Scott, Thank you for reaching out to me. I've been trying to figure out how to best communicate the complications that we faced while we worked with The Eastern, specifically with Emily. We found the experience disorganized, and needlessly stressful. The parking was a large issue- and let me be clear, I'm aware that the circumstances surrounding the lot being no longer available for use were out of The Eastern's control. However it felt like the response on The Eastern's part since the lot became unusable was sub-par. In the beginning we were offered the lot across the street starting at 6pm- which wouldn't work for our full day rental as we started earlier in the day than that (wedding starting at 5pm). After repeated communications with Emily about this (some that she left unanswered from our planner, and also myself) we had a face to face conversation where she finally offered up a solution - but it wasn't guaranteed. We did finally get your confirmation email saying that the shuttle and security and the lot would be provided from 4pm- midnight running for our guest during that time period. However, the day of the event, there was no shuttle service running as outlined in YOUR EMAIL for our guests. I watched as all of our guest walked to The Eastern from the parking lot- many with health issues that they should NOT have been walking that distance. And then at the end of the night, the shuttle never came to pick up our guests and return them to the lot. Instead over 100 people walked back to their cars in the cold, in the rain and in the dark. Many not familiar with the area and concerned for their safety in Detroit. There has been no apology for this, no compensation for the blatant disregard for the promise and commitment made by ownership on the lack of follow through. Outside of this there were other smaller issues- but issues none the less. Less than a month before our rehearsal day that we had signed a contract for I get a call from Emily saying that she wants us to move our rehearsal to either another day or an hour or two earlier for another event. This not only was stressful to get this message, but also we had planned and were told via email that we could, bring in our items that we needed to drop off the night before our event. If there was to be another event held we weren't going to be allowed to do so. Emily then told us we needed to pay additional fees to hold our date for rehearsal if we wanted to bring in our items since The Eastern wouldn't be able to rent out the space that night for another event. The week or two weeks before the event (our planner) sent Emily the floor plan, the final guest count and other pertinent information as requested. The day of, the bar manager told (our planner) that she never received that information from Emily and that Emily claimed to have never received it. Working with Emily was by far the worst part of planning our wedding, the lack of communication, the springing information on us randomly, the disorganization and the disregard for the stress that she was creating was unappreciated and unprofessional. I cannot in good faith give a review of The Eastern in a positive light, and have already suggested to several couples, and several of my very highly sought after vendors to look elsewhere or steer their clients to a different venue. It is of my option that Emily needs to be replaced immediately, and something needs to be done about the fact that the parking shuttle was never around for the time period and duration that was promised. I had to apologize on the day of my wedding to several guests for the lack of commitment on The Eastern's part. That's something a bride should never have had to do. read more

We hosted an event here in December 2019 and it was a great experience! During the run up process, Emily and Scott were very informative and helpful. Being a non profit organization, we were on a limited budget and they were patient with us and assisted us in finding the right package to fit our exact needs. It was very simple to set up a tour of the venue and the line of communication always stayed open with the staff. On the day of the event The Eastern staff was present and very helpful in getting us set up, during the event they were still present and hands on, and answered all of our questions. I was blown away with the overall experience and especially the scenery. The venue played a huge part in the success of the event and the amount of guests who are still talking about how beautiful The Eastern is testament to that. We will definitely be a repeat customer and look forward to hosting more events here. read more

I recently got married at The Eastern and had a subpar experience. For starters, the event coordinator we were assigned was the most unhelpful person we worked with throughout our entire wedding planning experience. She neglected to share with us major renovations happening at the space that affected our site plan and the logistics of our guests. I only found out about these things because I happened to follow the venue on Instagram (it was 3 weeks out from our wedding date). Every other interaction my husband or I had with the coordinator was very cold and she almost acted like she was annoyed we were reaching out with concerns or questions about our wedding. On the day of our event, we paid extra to have the bar staff come early and setup champagne flutes that doubled as our place markers. The staff didn't show up early (we later found out they were never asked to come early) and the champagne flutes didn't arrive until 15 min before the ceremony started. Our day of coordinator (not associated with the venue) had to leave the site and go secure over 200 champagne flutes because we didn't think they were going to show up. All-in-all, I loved the space and our wedding because we were really able to make it our own, but I would not count on The Eastern to help with anything. I will say, the day of bar staff was incredible! They were so nice and accommodating - best part of our experience! read more
