**The rooftop only*** About 5 of us got there and we were told to grab ANY table, that it was first come first serve so we did. We ordered food and drinks and half way through the middle of our delightful evening, the hostess told us that our table was reserved and we had to clear out. I was like WHAT? After arguing with her and explaining that we were told it was was first come first serve she vanished and Matron Mama Martin came in with her Orange is the new black attitude telling us we had to clear out no matter what we were told. I am NEVER setting foot in this swampy, nasty place, where they treat clients like this. Only uneducated, inexperienced management would allow this. read more

We stayed here last month, but did not get a chance to try the restaurant for dinner. This week we stayed at 21c (also amazing accommodations) because The Durham was booked, but we had dinner in the downstairs restaurant one night. LET ME TELL YOU- nothing disappoints! We had tix to a Bulls game so just order apps and drinks. I'll break it down: The Green Room: I have recently enjoyed gin drinks that are made well, and this was one of them! Tart without being too sweet and very refreshing! Tomato Soup: this was a chilled gazpacho style soup featuring chopped fresh tomatoes, hard boiled egg, and fresh dill. So perfect on a hot afternoon after our 2 flights- but would be equally as delicious on a fall day! Picnic eggs: perfect yolk mouse and extremely tasty! They were garnished with some smoked fish and caviar that my husband LOVED. Beef Tartare: preparation was BEAUTIFUL! It's grass fed beef- so it's BEEFY and you get that full flavor. I was worried about the raw onions being overpowering, but it all worked beautifully together. I added a little extra black pepper and it was fantastic. Durham Oysters: I did not try these are they were a little large and I prefer them smaller (it's the season, I'm not complaining) but my husband said they were delicious! Briny and garnished with creme fraiche and caviar. Ciabatta with black butter: DON'T. MISS. THIS. The bread is perfectly chewy and crusty and WOW that butter! It's charcoal infused so be prepared to brush your teeth- but you don't want to pass this up! The cheese balls: I forgot the name on the menu, but YOU WANT THESE!!! And you want to take some to go when you are watching TV in your hotel later that night! The cheese is a NC made and similar to a Gruyere and then fried in the lightest dough ball (about the size of a hush puppy) and garnished with grated Parmesan or pecorino. read more

*This review is for the rooftop bar only* I had a lot of fun hanging out at this bar after dinner on a Saturday night. It's definitely more of a chill vibe than a pseudo-club vibe like some other rooftop bars. They have plenty of comfy seating (both covered and open-air), and there are also dining tables so you can order food up there if you want. There are lots of creative cocktails so we had drinks and apps and everything was really good. I loved the view and even though a light rain started, we stayed along with plenty of other people because the majority of the area is covered and they also have an indoor rooftoop bar as well. I will definitely return to this bar next time I have dinner in downtown Durham! read more

Such a nice escape. I visited the roof at the Durham hotel during a Sunday afternoon and it was so breezy and full of good vibes. I ordered the Durham and Hitman - both drinks full of flavor and liquor! The guac was delicious and the house made chips were good too; slightly salty and missing a dip..ranch maybe? The DJ was playing some 90s pop but then switched upon request and added some 90s r&b as well, and the atmosphere was even better. The service was ok, nothing noteworthy, but that's all right because I have no complaints. Worth a visit if you're looking for a casual rooftop experience. read more

It is on the 6th floor of the new Durham Hotel, and I have to say it reminded me of places I have been in LA and San Diego. Super hip but in a friendly, not pretentious way. . I am happy to report I got to experience my first orange wine! (not sweet at all, by the way). Husband had a Manhattan, which he also liked very much. This place was superb! The waiter was literally the best waiter I have had in many many years. Best in Raleigh by far. I had the baked oysters, and my man had the the NC trout. We also had a side of beef fat fries and corn on the cob. Everything was fantastic! Really well done. Worth the price. Our order looked so good, the people around us asked about our dishes. Dessert was an expresso for him and a pot o chocolate to share. Dessert was ok, a little boring. This place was amazing. I would highly recommend this to all my friends. This review is for the restaurant at the Durham hotel, and I could not find a separate listing for it. It's a nice restaurant, a perfect place for a date night. We went and didn't really want a huge meal, we decided just to order the burger. A lot of times when I order a burger at a fancy restaurant it's an amazing burger, that wasn't the case here. In fact the burger was very disappointing! It had very little flavor, I assume they use a low-fat brown beef which is a mistake for making a tasty burger! They also put no sauce at all on it, not even any mayo! We had to ask for Mayo and they brought out a garlic flavored mayonnaise which gave the burger some flavor. The fries were really good at least. I looked at some of the other meals people were getting and they looked stunning, so I hate to rank this place poorly just based off of our experience. I would definitely like to go back and try one of their other dishes. read more

Hotel review - I stayed at the Durham Hotel for one night in July and was pleasantly surprised to get upgraded to a suite. The decor was beautiful and the staff all super friendly. The one thing I did not enjoy was how noisy my room was. I could hear dishes and glasses clinking or something, so I'm glad I brought ear plugs. Rooftop restaurant review - The food is a bit overpriced, but generally good. Service is friendly, and good selection of drinks. What I live for is the January oyster special (sad it's now over) - $1/oyster from 5-7. If they ran a happy hour special like this regularly I'd be a much more frequent visitor. read more

A couple of my friends and I came here at The Durham Hotel's Rooftop Bar for the first time. I called earlier prior to see if we could make a reservation for the rooftop bar and was surprised to find out that they reserve tables for groups. The employees and staff were super friendly and polite. We had bar service at the Rooftop, which was easier anyways for our bigger group. We ordered our drinks and food from the bar. Their bar menu consists of a variety of drinks and a good variety of food options. I ordered the Carrot Dog out of curiosity and was pleasantly surprised. The "dog" is actually a whole carrot thats been smoked and grilled? Nonetheless, it was really delicious! My cousin ordered a mojito (which isn't on the menu), but we all agreed that it's probably the 2nd best mojito we've had in the Triangle area. First is definitely Calaveras (r.i.p calaveras, so sad they closed). I'll definitely be back for their restaurant, excited to try they other menu options! read more

We decided to have a drink and a snack ....after a show recently... while in Durham. The Durham Hotel Rooftop had been mentioned to us as a nice place to stop .... consequently, we thought we would give it a go. As I entered the building via the main lobby, I could not help but think that this might be an interesting and in certain respects somewhat edgy / chic place to stay next-time while visiting North Carolina. Very nice decor, glassy and comfortably modern. The open, restaurant / bar area on the top of the roof (of the Durham Hotel) was very tranquil. Good views, spacious and a variety of conversation pits and table seating options were available. Service was just OK. Not remarkable and (actually) a little slow for no more patrons than they had at the time of our visit. Their wine selection was adequate and we found suitable whites and reds that met our needs / desires. The snacks were very yummy. We ordered oysters on the half shell and picnic eggs with smoked fish / trout roe. Tasty and just enough, not too much. We had a super time just picking at the food, drinking the wine and enjoying the view. A place you may want to check out for business or pleasure (or maybe, both). read more

Since moving to the area I kept hearing how I needed to try this rooftop bar out. Sooo, I ventured out on a nice Saturday when the weather was gorgeous thinking it would be great. Eh...not quite. I was pretty underwhelmed by the whole experience. Although I know the rooftop is supposed to be THE best feature, I still expected the lobby/main level to be attractive. It was decorated ok but I still was expecting more. The hotel itself is pretty old which was indicative in the long elevator wait and ride upstairs. I felt like I entered the Bates Motel during the rickety ride. I just knew the lights were going to flicker and that would be it for us. When we finally reached the top floor, it was pretty crowded which was a good sign to me - people wanted to be there. However, I was quickly confused by the varied demographics. Now I love everyone but I thought this place would have more of an identity which it seemed to lack. Then again, that's been my experience at a few places here soooo, I digress. The view was lovely but there weren't any "outside" seats available so we sat at the bar. The pisco sour inspired drink I had was good but waaaaay overpriced. I get that it's a hotel bar, downtown, AND on a rooftop but I didn't think it was worth it. Beautiful views on a historic building, friendly bartenders, and good drinks. Can't ask for much more! To get here, just pick the highest floor on the elevators on the left of entry. I found it odd that they didn't have a sign in the lobby for it, but there were attendants there if you had any questions! There's a large balcony, big covered outdoor area, and an inside section. The bar had some buffers of snacks and there was a food menu offered besides the drink menu. The drinks came fast and serve was attentive. Stopped by with friends to enjoy the rooftop bar/lounge and it was great. Loved the vibe, the set-up and the drinks. Overall it was a really good time and I was able to get some nice shots of downtown and the sun was setting. They've done a great job in creating a really chill atmosphere and I enjoyed it! The missing stay is for the elevator. We got there and it wasn't working so we had to walk up the stairs. Then when it was time to leave, it was finally working but temporarily paused in one of the floors without opening. Hopefully I won't have that issue the next time I visit. read more

Enjoyed their rooftop bar after a Christmas party in the area. Great drinks and beautiful set-up. There is more than enough space and they have couches and chairs. When you go during the cold seasons they enclose it giving off this great vibe. It is also heated so you won't be cold. The only con was that they close the bar earlier than some other bars around. read more

Well the view is beautiful, and it was pretty crowded here, even on a weeknight. My drink wasn't fantastic (I had their signature "Durham" cocktail). However, the bartender was very nice, and the ambiance is stellar. It was a nice mild evening to be outside. Premature spring evening in February. We had just eaten dinner, but the oysters looked great. I love the retro look of the building and the local Durham feel. We always stay in Durham as a halfway point between MD and GA. Recently we started staying in The Durham hotel and we are big fans. It's a quirky mid-century looking building with a real focus on featuring locally made products, such as the soaps and snacks, as well as the bedspreads (made of denim). The staff here was lovely and very accommodating- especially Queenie, who was incredibly friendly during both of our recent visits. The location is conveniently near lots of good restaurants and cute gift shops too. Additionally, the beds were very comfortable, the bar makes tasty old fashions and the morning coffee service meant that the hotel coffee was actually good AND they can provide soy milk for your coffee!! Which as two vegans, we were delighted to discover! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I've taken every visiting friend and family member here. This is a great place to show off the city while enjoying a fancy cocktail. There is plenty of seating on the upstairs deck, whether that be inside, by the bar, or under the patio. The drinks are high quality with a touch of good extraordinary. Pictured is The Green Room (greenish drink) that was similar to a mojito. I can't remember the other drink but yes, that's a drop of extra virgin olive oil in the middle. The nachos were literally the best nachos that I have ever had. The chips were pita I believe which made them all that much more crunchier. I hope to actually stay at the Durham someday. I haven't seen the rooms but the dining room is made of my retro dreams. read more

Made a reservation online as soon as I could, two weeks in advance, for my wife's birthday. Built a plan for Saturday night built around watching sunset at this "upscale" venue over cocktails. Received a call five days later that the venue was closed for a private event, trashing my weekend plans (booked a hotel and made other plans once I as able to get a rezzy at the Durham). If this wasn't a purportedly "upscale" venue, I wouldn't leave this review. But, for what they charge and how the Durham postures itself: get your reservation act together, or, lacking a week's worth of foresight, at least make timely cancellation calls to customers who went through the trouble to book a reservation at your restaurant. Terrible service yields terrible reviews. And thanks for offering me a chance to book a reservation indoors...but no thanks. Cheers! read more

After sharing a twin bed and sleeping on hospital recliners for the past week my boyfriend and I decided to take a night to ourselves and stay at The Durham Hotel. Leaving our four month old son, who is recovering from open heart surgery, was extremely difficult, but having the ability to be only 10 minutes away and reconnect as a couple and recharge as individuals was a blessing. Attended an event on "The Roof" so this is a review of rooftop only. Offline, Bee Downtown and The Durham Hotel joined forces to bring the ultimate Sunday Funday on the rooftop! On Sunday, July 17, from 6-8p, I headed up to The Roof at The Durham Hotel for Bee Bash, a summer evening spent sipping, snacking, basking in beautiful city views and learning all about the beloved pollinators--bees! Local bee keepers Bee Downtown allowed us to get up close and personal with the bee world, offering some bee-keeping fun facts and I learned about how Durham just became Bee City USA. There was also plenty of handmade honeys and soaps for sale for guests to take home! The rooftop bar had specialty menu items just for the occasion, from lavender + honey infused bevs to honey-kissed appetizers. I had the chicken bites, a cocktail of rum,honey,prosecco and also sampling of so NC cider infused with honey! To top it all off, there was a raffle to win a free tour of the rooftop apiaries at American Tobacco Campus, with proceeds going toward Bee Downtown's non-profit leg, which brings free bee hive demos and workshops to local elementary schools. You'd be surprised, but the Durham Hotel's lobby is great for tea + an afternoon of studying. The tables and chairs are comfortable, and the open space is brightly lit with natural light. The noise level is on the quiet side, with maybe a few scattered conversations. I would suggest that they add more loose-leaf tea options, as well as get tea pots that help keep the tea warm. Also, some afternoon tea snacks (macarons, little cucumber sandwiches, scones, etc.) would be a cute touch! Just throwing some ideas out there :) The roof top is great for drinks at night. It is Durham, though, so the view isn't exactly a NYC type of view; but it IS a rooftop bar, and as classy of a rooftop bar as you'll get in Durham. Most people are dressed pretty casually, but I could easily see the venue being used for a fancier occasion. I have not actually stayed at the Durham hotel or come here for food, so this review only applies to two scenarios above! read more

I really enjoyed my staycation at The Durham Hotel. I've heard a lot of buzz about this boutique hotel and it was about time I checked it out. First off it's extremely convenient to everything you will want to see in downtown Durham, just park your car in the parking garage across the street and you are all set. As soon as you walk through the front doors you'll notice the cool modern decor and hip feel of the place. We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and took the elevator up to our room. The rooms were huge! Again I dig the simplicity of all the design elements this hotel offers. Instead of a mini fridge and snack tray full of generic products they keep a cute little basket in your room with all local NC made good to choose from (you have to buy them) but still it's such a unique touch. They also do turndown service with chocolate yes!! They also let you order coffee the night before from three types of counter culture coffee (hello Durham) they will grind it fresh and leave it at your door to brew. I didn't have a chance to eat in the restaurant but did have some bites upstairs on the rooftop. Now you can't beat the rooftop view this place offers it's the best in the Triangle area. We had an awesome experience with our server and bartender (yes we went twice in one night). The oysters and beef tartare were so good. They also had a nice wine selection to choose from. Overall my experience was great and I would definitely recommend this hotel to my network. I look forward to coming back for another staycation sometime soon. read more

I love love The Durham Hotel because of their personal touch, and their decor speaks to my mid-century modern crush. The Roof at The Durham is fantastic and perfect to have a pre-dinner beverage and to watch the sunset over the Bull City. My DH isn't a big raw oysters kind of guy, so we had the guac and fresh masa tortillas along with some adult beverages. Let me tell you, I can drink that Airmail all day. Rum, lime, honey and prosecco? Um, yes please and keep them coming! The Roof is also great for drinks with coworkers after a looong day. My DH and I came during the middle of the week after work, and saw quite a few groups of people stream in to gather at the raw bar or on the sofas. They got super busy and fast, but the wait staff was so attentive (except for ours - sad face - but I saw another server giving her a hug, so maybe she was not having her best day). I noticed how they were constantly replenishing beverages and water. I do want to give props to the hostesses. We were seated at a table for two, but we thought a friend would be joining us so asked to be moved. They accommodated us without hesitation even though it started to get busy. Then our friend changed her mind, but they didn't make us feel pressured to hurry up at all. Dinner was amazing and met every expectation. If you're a fan of Lantern and James Beard Award-winning chef, Andrea Reusing, you won't be disappointed. DH had the Rutherfordton chicken and I had the black bass with Louisiana crawfish stew. SO good. Our server was attentive and very well versed on the menu. We haven't stayed at The Durham yet, but The Roof and dinner at The Durham are worth the visit. read more

We came to the new hotel on a Thursday evening to have a look and were not disappointed. The doorman and hosts in reception were very friendly and accommodating. They informed us the rooftop bar wasn't open for another 20 minutes but that the cafe was open and we were welcome to meander the lobby and have a look, which we did. The lobby is a time machine to the quasi 50s, an era that existed perhaps on Alternate Earth. It blends modern synthetic materials with classic design and a few souvenirs from the original building. It feels low slung, casual and comfortable. The concierge directed us to the elevator and with a wink recommended the fried chicken. The doorman and receptionist, eyes strangely glazed, murmured "yes, the fried chicken..." Upstairs on the rooftop we were amazed by the wonderful panoramic view of -ahem- Durham! Y'all big city folks (from Raleigh!) may not be impressed but it's a new perspective on all the old familiar sights and a vulture's eye view of the changing landscape of the town. Quick! Photo document those skylines! The cranes, bulldozers and jackhammers are here to stay and the Durham we knew is already gone, getting goner and you can watch it from here with a fancy drink in your hand. We were early enough to be the first people sat after a crazy rainstorm. Even with the roof covering most of the dining area the place was thoroughly soaked and the staff were scrambling to dry things out. Andrea herself, a bit frazzled but friendly enough as hostess, sat us and made sure we were well situated. Our waitress was perfect all night and we were well served in general because there were so many people floating around. There was a lot of shadowing and staff training happening. The menu is very limited but attractive nonetheless. The guacamole and chips were straightforward and excellent. The picnic eggs were very striking and memorable $2 bites of smoked fish and trout roe. The Cape Lookout came in a huge bowl of ice and was quite the centerpiece with 4 counts each of raw oysters, clams, marinated mussels and huge steamed shrimp heads on. It was good but didn't rock me as hard as $22 could have, perhaps. After more drinks and an unseemly long delay we were finally allowed access to our plate of fried chicken. It was dark, boneless meat wonderfully cut, battered and fried so that it curled up into alluring shapes with a devastating texture. The taste followed through with its promise and like so many beautiful things in this world it was gone too soon, leaving us to wonder why. We left happy with the lovely experience and took the stairs down, descending through the whitewashed turrets of the former Mutual Savings Bank. We hit the ground floor and went outside, marveling at the hand painted Moroccan tiles leading to a gleaming stainless steel shoeshine stand. I've been to the rooftop bar here many times and eaten in the restaurant once, but I stayed in the actual hotel over the weekend, so now I feel qualified to write a review since there's not a separate listing for the rooftop bar or the restaurant. This is a very cool redesign of a 1969 bank building, with the midcentury architectural flourishes kept in place and brought up-to-date with a modern-retro décor. The restaurant/lobby area has boldly-patterned carpet (which made me keep thinking, "This must be a beast to keep vacuumed") and neat black-and-white tiling at the entrance. Check-in staff was very friendly; the room wasn't quite ready yet but they took my bag and had it waiting in the room when I came back an hour later and the room was ready. (Side note: They have a $100 per night incidental hold on your credit card, which seems a little steep for Durham.) The room itself was fairly spacious (I got the superior room, which gives an extra 50 square feet of space and a sitting area over the regular rooms). The bed was super-comfortable; the couch was not (no arms for leaning against). The room is done with neutral gray and white on the walls and deep-blue carpets and bedspread. Some color accents are provided with mustard-colored drapes and an upholstered red desk chair and red bedside tables. The overall effect is clean retro. The bathroom is mostly gray and white with subway tiles and a deep blue polished concrete floor. It has a walk-in shower only. There is no ice on the individual floors; you have to call the front desk for it and they will bring it up. It arrived quickly, but it's still not as handy as ice dispensers on the room floors. The wifi works well all over the hotel from my experience. The rooftop lounge is the crowning glory both literally and figuratively. It's only the sixth floor, but Durham is not a forest of skyscrapers and you can see a good distance in all directions, including pretty wooded areas, all the reclaimed and repurposed historic buildings downtown, and multiple church spires as well as beautiful sunsets. They have a small plates menu that is different from the restaurant downstairs (the picnic eggs, the mixed greens with mustard vinaigrette, and the fried chicken are my favorites) and a good selection of specialty cocktails. The Airmail is a rum and prosecco concoction and The Durham is a stiffer blend of liquors. I've found service on the rooftop to be very good, but it's quite popular and if you don't get there when they open at 5, you may be stuck with whatever seating is left, particularly on a nice evening. They have heat lamps on the latticework over the seating, but I'm dubious about the viability of the space in coldest winter. The lobby restaurant has a pretty smallish menu and is locally-focused. I enjoyed a giant slab of pork with a side of pole beans with bacon. They seem to rotate it quite a bit, but just be aware there's not a huge selection. All in all, I enjoyed my weekend here poking around downtown. It's an easy walk to all the bars and restaurants in the downtown core. On weekends, parking is free in the deck across the street. This review is for The Roof at The Durham... and writing those four capitalized words alone give you a sense for where Durham is headed. I do really love the rooftop views and the chill summer vibe, even if it feels more pretentious than I'd like to associate with Durham. Five stars for the view, especially when the skies are in full NC majestic mode. My friends (but not I, of course!) also enjoy spying on the oblivious guests of the nearby Marriott, whose backlit windows make everything visible. Four stars for the bar. If you don't have table service, the only place to get drinks is at the pretty packed bar. The last few times I've gone, there were only 3 bartenders making great drinks, very prettily but very methodically, so the wait is typically long. Drinks are pricey... a glass of wine or a specialty cocktail (the Airmail, yum!!!) runs you $9-13. But now that I think about it, a lot of bars in Durham are now sitting in this price range, so I guess it's inevitable for a city/town that is getting too cool for me. Five stars for service. If you're lucky enough to get one of the lounge tables, they treat you very nicely. Usually need reservations though. I do really enjoy coming here! It boggles my mind that we now have a swanky rooftop bar in little ol' Durham, which used to make me think of food trucks and Surf Club, but it just goes to show how quickly this city is changing. This was our first time eating at the Restaurant at the The Durham Hotel and We enjoyed everything that we ordered. The sauce on the pork belly had the perfect amount heat. The duck was so tender and the accompanying Brussel sprouts were smoky. The chicken skin was crispy and the eggplant was delicious. We will definitely be back again to sit in Emily's section. I was privileged to tour The Durham Hotel. This independent building pays respect to the city of Durham by hiring local Durham and RTP workers, using local Durham and RTP coffee, food, supplies and home decor, and pledging to provide the client a luxury, authentic Durham experience. The staff at the hotel greets you with a handshake and a smile. The opening floor provides wifi, a wide breadth of newspapers and magazines to peruse as well as an open space that creates a sentiment of casual and community in a hotel build on luxury materials, quality and experience. The original bank vault from the previous owner still remains as a sign of reverence for original architecture. The 53 rooms are extremely clean, spacious, and open with the original building's windows allowing the fresh light to seep in making you feel like you are not separate from the outside world. Local Raleigh Denim creates the blankets with their high quality denim and local Burt's Bees offers lip balm and product that is free to the client. Local NC Made offers a snack bar with local treats for you to indulge in. The prices range from mid 200 dollars up to 800 dollars for the top-floor penthouse. For the quality of service and construction in the building as well as the downtown location, I would qualify this as extremely competitive and reasonable. My final thoughts are dedicated to one of the Directors of the hotel Craig Shipley. He truly made me feel like I was more than just a customer. He showed me that I was part of a Renaissance in Downtown Durham. This is a city that is different. It doesn't cater to colonizing corporations. It doesn't oppress the locals for a better bottom line. Durham and The Durham Hotel pays respect to the past while curiously exploring a better future. For this socially responsible reason, The Durham Hotel receives my fullest support and endorsement. I highly recommend you give it a try. read more

Cool spot. Rooftop is awesome. The problem is they force you to go to the bar to order drinks, I stood in line the first time for 10 minutes, when it was my turn the bartender moved to the other end to take orders. I tried again, this time I stood in line for 9 minutes before I walked away- it was just crazy busy. So two opportunities to make money were squandered. Suggestion: Set up two different stations separate from the bar to serve beer and wine. Quick and easy. Cocktails and food can be ordered from the bar. read more
