    John Hansen Music Studio

It…read morewas a "bucket list" item for me, always wanted to play piano but life got in the way, raising a family, work/career development and more. But then I stepped out of my comfort zone and found John on the internet. Really wasn't sure if I'd stick with it either. I remember thinking, as long as I'm having fun, I'll stay with it. In short, John made it fun for me, and still does. I had zero music experience, never played an instrument. John had patience with me and my learning ability. I asked a million question and John patiently answered them all. I take a lesson every week and this keeps me focused, and prevents me from procrastinating as I know I have a lesson coming up shortly. Seems like every time when I sit down at the piano, time flies by, and it's fun. John allowed me to pick the songs I liked to learn and play. This made practice more enjoyable for me. Sometimes the songs were too complex for my ability, and John would re-write them in the sections I had difficulty with, so I could play to my ability and continue learning. In addition to the songs I picked, John adds academic exercises, scales in different keys, and more. These allowed me to develop the skills needed to improve. I find these to be little puzzles to unlock, and these too are enjoyable in their own way. I just finished my third year taking lessons from John. I can read music and play at the same time, although not always perfect. Sometimes I record myself on my iPhone, and text it to family and friends, even put it on Facebook. Everyone is so supportive. I don't' have any lofty goals to become a concert pianist. I just want to have fun, continue to learn, and enjoy my time with the piano. Just remember this, you're never too old to learn something new. John Hansen was the key to unlocking my "bucket list", glad I connected with John.

My son took lessons here briefly in 2011 when we were still living in Massachusetts…read more The music studio where private lessons are held is in a renovated coal storage cellar and it reeks of coal fumes no matter how much Febreeze he may try to hide it with. Very little room in the waiting area, and while there are two studio rooms, only one is ever used; the second room is not open as a waiting area but it's never used for lessons because Mr. Hansen is the only instructor. He teaches piano, voice, bass, guitar and drums, but is only a professional on the piano and an amateur at best on voice. It seems his strategy for guitar, bass and drums (and even voice to a degree) is to stay at least a week's worth of material ahead of the student so as to give the illusion that he knows what he is doing, and isn't just trying to maximize profits for himself alone. The instruction quality is very basic, and lacking mostly in the finer points, especially in classical music where my own son ended up going to another instructor so that he could properly interpret and master those points of the style and others. But this isn't the most serious part. Mr. Hansen not only has an air of non-professionalism in this approach to instruction, and in the way he carries himself around his clients. He frequently flirted with my wife when she brought my son to his lessons and she was concerned that he may go so far as to ask her out in an attempt to begin an affair with her, or worse. He has no respect for women from what I had gathered and frequently speaks inappropriately with parents and students. After this unprofessional (and incredibly creepy) gesture, we withdrew our son and signed him up with someone who knows what they're doing musically and can act appropriately around parents and older students.
