Why such a low grade? Because we had to pay a second contractor to fix the original contractor's problem.
"We do 1 thing... Door Intallations and we do it very well." "We are a door installation Service company. We take pride in doing 1 thing very well. You can count on a professional installation." "We take pride in our service as well as our customer satisfaction. We value new customers as well as our loyal longtime customers. Our intention is for you to be happy with our work for years to come."
These quotes are copied/pasted directly from The Door Guys website. Because of these quotes, in addition to the number of excellent reviews on Angie's List, we hired The Door Guys to install an entry door to our garage in July 2014. Before settling on The Door Guys (TDG), we had several door installers (including TDG) come to the house to look at our door situation. Not one of them, with the exception of Ryon O. (owner of TDG), said we needed a prehung unit. In our 12 years in this house, we had never had a minutes trouble with the door. We were replacing it strictly for cosmetic reasons as it had delaminated in several places. There also had never been (in 35 years) a threshold or weatherstripping in that doorway as the garage is detached from the house. We did not want or need those things. So based on the majority opinion, we bought a slab door (Home Depot) to be installed. Despite Ryon's lone dissenting opinion that we needed a prehung unit, we decided to use him to install the door because of his supposed expertise. We paid TDG $200 for the installation. The man who did the work trimmed a little off the side of the door (not needed) and then some off of the bottom. In doing so, he gouged up the side, cut too much off the bottom and cut the bottom totally unevenly. We were not happy with the work and had Ryon come look at it. He agreed the door was poorly installed. He even pointed out that the hinges had not been mortised as they should have been. (I don't understand any of this because, in their own words, all they do is install doors and they do it very well.) To his credit, Ryon bought us a new door (same kind) and installed it himself. It seemed to be done correctly, though the bottom of the door was extremely close to the surface of the garage entryway. (Ryon says we told him to cut it really tight. Not true. What we told him was that the other installer had cut it too short. We just wanted it cut like our previous door had been.) Just a few weeks later, the door started dragging. We called Ryon and wanted him to come check it out. He wouldn't. He told us he doesn't warranty the installation of slab doors. (We knew there was a one year warranty on installations. We assumed it was for ALL installations. Not so.) We were extremely disappointed. We hired him because we believed he would do an excellent job, and if something wasn't right, he would make it right. Well, that only applies to prehung units. You see, according to the dialogue we've had with Ryon since our installation, he has made it clear that he believes EVERY door should be prehung; therefore he does not warranty his work on slab doors. He says installing a slab door in an existing frame is like "putting Chevy parts into a Ford". Well, if the frame is in good shape, that's just not true. Does it take more skill to install a slab door than a prehung unit? From what I've read, it absolutely does. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. It just means the door installer needs to be skilled at installing slab doors. Based on TDG's website, we believed they were proficient at installing ALL kinds of doors. Had we known they would not stand behind their installation of a slab door, we would not have used them. And really, once they knew we were installing a slab door, they should have told us there would be no warranty on the work. I still believe that if they are truly experts at this one thing, they should stand behind their work, prehung door or not. In our case, it was an easy fix --- just trimming a little more off the bottom and rehanging it. Ryon should have done this for no charge, but we had to pay someone else to do it. If TDG aren't confident enough in their ability to install slab doors to warranty the work, they should not install slab doors. I wish they hadn't installed ours --- and I bet they feel the same. read more
