We happened to be in the area (somewhat) and a work colleague had recommended that we stop if possible. She raved about these little lemon doughnuts and because we love both...donuts and lemon...how could we not take the 20 minute drive out of the way to go see for ourselves. AMAZING! We talked with the owners and learned they've been there like 44 years! That points to not only how popular they are but their quality...and it's always great when you learn that these long-lasting mom and pop places made it through COVID. We got the lemon donuts which are small luscious bits of soft dough cooked to perfection and covered with a lemon glaze. These donuts are light and fluffy and yummy! I've been going to The Donut ever since I discover it. It's a not so big donut and coffee place right in Gaffey in San Pedro. The lady, Dada, running the store is so welcoming and always have a big smile. They sell Terri sizes of doughnuts. Regular and mini. I prefer the mini so I don't consume too much sugar. My favorite is the old fashion mini doughnut. There's a drive thru window so if you don't need to go in. The only thing is they take cash out Zelle payments only. No CC. But I don't mind since it's not that much. I've tried their coffee and there's always whole milk out half and half. If you haven't tried them before I strongly recommend it. Just drive slowly when you go south on Gaffey just after 16th or 17th St. middle of the block. You will love it like I love it. read more

This is an old-time local institution in San Pedro. Decent glazed donuts and croissant sandwiches. They open early but I was told that these days they tend to open between 5:30-6am in the mornings. The ideal time to go seems to between 9am-10am when they have just finished baking fresh batches and before it gets sold out. read more

I used to go this place when the previous owner managed it. The donuts were always priced well and the donuts were great. So, the current owner charges different prices all the time. Today, I ordered a cruller, it was like a mini cruller and cold, like it had been in the frig. Then I was told that the donut was $1.85. That would be understandable if it were a normal size, but this was like a mini cruller. I just think the pricing is arbitrary and they charge whatever the customer will pay. I won't go back, which is something they don't consider. I think the place is a rip off and there are other donut shops on Gaffey. One is on the east side of the street due north. I had placed an order yesterday for pick up today and let me tell you that Dara went above and beyond to make sure everything was ready and exactly to my specifications. Service was super quick and very pleasant. This was my 2nd time to this place and we love the mini donuts they make. I started liking donuts after 2 pregnancies. Before I never seemed to like the deep fried dough taste with that overly sugar topping. Anyway, post-pregnancy, I like donuts now. This shop has unassumingly soft and fresh donuts. You can also ask them to warm it up for you. My favorite is the maple bar. The lemon fill is good. Good service and reasonable prices. I get the mini donuts for my kids. My daughter likes the mini pink frosting. Mini donuts are key because I don't have to cut a portion of a regular sized donut for my kids. There's a drive thru window that's pretty convenient. I bring my kid or if we wake up early in the morning and I don't have to lug them out of the car. Super useful. read more

There's something about California donuts that just hit different. I don't know what it is, but I haven't been to one bad spot. This place was probably one of the better ones we had. My fam and I hit up The Donut bright and early on our way out of LA to drive the PCH. It's an older building with an old school feel to it. Nothing fancy but full of character. We were the only ones in there when we arrived, but you could already see they must've had a surge of people go through because there was slim pickings in the display case. It looks like this is a mom and pop shop because I didn't see a bunch of people working. The nice lady who did help us was super friendly and helpful. Even with inventory low, we all found something we liked along with hot fresh coffee and juices. One person in our party wanted a chocolate croissant but they were out. Everything we had from donuts to breakfast sandwiches were delicious and everyone left happy. What gave this place 5 stars was when we were leaving, the employee brought us a box of fresh goodies including a chocolate croissant since she knew we were going on a long road trip. I've had donuts from here for years but had never actually been there till recently. I had no doubt the donuts were good but the hospitality I experienced on my first visit was top notch. The owner is super nice and eager to answer any questions I had. I was even treated to a sample. I can't make it early enough to get their full selection but what I was able to get was outstanding. The ham and cheese croissant and the cinnamon roll I got were so good. The next time I was in the lady serving me was so apologetic about the selection that was left. The Donut has deeelicious donuts - I just noshed on a coconut donut and it was nicely sweet, sprinkled with flaked coconut. Who doesn't love fried dough confections? This yeast raised ring wasn't heavy tasting at all, and tasted so fresh almost as if the frying oil was lightly zested with lemon...there is a distinct lightness about these donuts and in my opinion they are some of the best I've tasted. I learned of this place through my housemate whose colleague brings donuts to the hospital every Friday. Every once in a while I'd be the recipient of these little gems. It's way out of the way for me, but the donuts are quite wonderful so the drive is worth it. Crumb, maple, buttermilk old fashioned are just a few of my favs. I don't think I've ever bought just one or two, I always go for at least a dozen because I know the family and drop in guests will polish these off in a few bites or less. Delicious Donuts at great prices. Came here this past Saturday at 12. As they had a busy morning and were closing soon (1pm), the selection was not optimal, but we were happy they still had donuts to sell. We ordered glazed donuts, glazed twists (one cinnamon), cherry, old fashioned, and sprinkled cake donut. Everything was really yummy and the box you see pictured here was just under $10. The people working (assume they are the owners) are super nice and welcoming. They even gave us a few small glazed donuts for us to sample and threw in a frame extra in our box! My sister loves apple fritters and recently tried one in a popular DTLA location that was over fried, dry and swarming with bees in the display case. She tried the apple fritter at The Donut and said it was perfect; moist inside with apple in each bite and perfectly fried outside. I took a box of donuts on the plane to visit family in Portland, OR. They agree you don't have to wait in line at the hip donut shops in Portland, just go to The Donut in San Pedro. I came here with my cousins with recommendation from my mom that this was the famous donut shop she saw on the food channel. It was a huge disappointment and we were all confused as to whether we were in the right place. The donut case was mostly empty with flies infesting the place and out of the three donuts we got, they all tasted super mediocre and flat. The donut itself was soft, but it left a strong intense flavor of fried-ness as if it's been sitting the case for more than a day and they skimped on the glaze. This place is no good. They don't even have a selection at all of donuts. Also they're cash only which is very much behind the times and probably to cheat the irs. Such a shame when bad customer service ruins a place. We've been here a few times but have gotten helped by a lady and everything has always gone fine - until today. My mom was ordering some donuts and only had a certain amount of money in cash so she was keeping track of the amount due. When the person helping her, who I assume to be the owner, told her the amount due she mentioned that he overcharged her based on the menu prices. He recounted and realized he did in fact overcharge, but then threw in the snarky comment "there, are you happy with that price?" My mom replied "yes, since that is the correct price." As she was about to pay, he made a face at her in disgust which then made my mom not want to complete the order. We don't like giving business to rude people. After she told him to cancel the order because of his bad attitude he started yelling at her "F*** you!" along with other profanity. She ran out in fear from his anger.
