I brought my toy poodle into the groomer here for the first time. Not only was she meticulously groomed and looked amazing, but we found her jumping in happiness. Giselle was delighted to show us her new friends. Giselle ran back and forth to the staff kissing them and then back to us as if she was introducing her new friends to us. I bought a dog here almost three years ago. I have called, and sent e-mails to the manager to obtain copies of my original receipt and paperwork. He only replies when he wants to (and I have not received a reply). I would have liked a response considering I am one of his customers that gave him business. Personally I haven't brought my dog to this store for grooming. But I live less than one block away. I learned from neighbors that yesterday, March 2. 2022, a totally panicked, very small dog, named Chester, ran out of this store after being groomed, and awaiting the return of his owner. Poor, utterly scared, Chester tried to run the several blocks back to his home, he was killed by a car on Second Avenue. His owner came to pick him up to find out that her dog was lost, only to learn later that he'd been killed. How could this happen? What combination of negligence and incompetence in a grooming business could not safeguard a dog, and open their shop door and allow an untethered dog to run away and meet it's death like this? If I could give this place ZERO stars I would. I dropped off my dog here a few times in 2009 & 2010. The first couple of times seemed ok. On my puppy's last visit to this horrible store, I came to pick him up a little bit earlier than usual and found my dog in a cage!!!! On top of his cage was the dog food in a ziploc bag that I had dropped off with my puppy that morning. In front of his cage was a box!!!! I asked the attendent (a male who was clearly on a personal call) what they fed him and he stated that they have food at the store. I was very mad because I had provided food and it was not given to him. He possibly did not eat that whole day. I also doubt they walked him. I paid for that visit- i really should not have. I should have contacted the owner (hopefully that worker is not the owner) and filed a formal complaint. I was very hurt and very upset. I started bringing my dog to another place (see my other reviews) and after seeing my dogs reaction at this new place when I pick him up, I know that The Dog Store did a number on my pup. When I pick him up now, he is happy and confident and social and not ready to leave. When I picked him up from his caged stay, he was acting weird and not his usual playful self. I think this store is just interested in selling $2,000+ puppies and not much else. If you want to traumatize your dog, or if you leave your dog in a cage all day- then bring him here. If you treat your dog like a loved member of the family then STAY AWAY! read more

When I brought her back ...4 hours later...they said they had called me to reschedule, but they were calling the wrong number. Dumb people and ridiculously high prices. I love these guys! I've been there with two of my dogs and their kindness and care for these two special situations was outstanding. The first dog I brought there was a very abused min pin I was fostering, as you can imagine she was terrified and not up for it, but her nails were way to long and I couldn't do it myself. I have no idea how they did it, but they put her at ease and managed to get her nails cut in nothing flat, and she would pull to go in when we walked by. There alone I loved them. But then recently I brought how a new little poodle puppy and they did a wonderful little welcome bath appointment just to get her comfortable and used to all that was going to be status quo. She had a tough time at first but they were patient with her, showing her each brush and letting her sniff it before they used it so she could see. She did still yelp a lot, she recently found her lungs, but they still gushed over her and say hi to her whenever we pass. You can't help but feel like this team really cares about your pup as much as you do. read more

DO NOT have your dog groomed at The Dog Store. A neighborhood dog was KILLED due to this store's ABSOLUTE NEGLIGENCE. The dog was not secured in the store and RAN OUT when someone opened the door. WTF???... I was waiting for the light to change on 3rd Ave. & 57th street and two women-- totally upset--told me they'd just seen a small dog come tearing by in a flash and run into traffic and lost sight of him. Twenty minutes later I was walking up 3rd Ave. when I heard a distraught woman wailing, screaming for help on 61st St. and 3rd Ave., near The Dog Store. I ran across the street to her and she told me her dog Chester had run out of The Dog Store thirty minutes ago and was lost. (The store DID NOT immediately notify her of Chester's escape. SERIOUSLY⁉) I told her about the women who'd seen an unleashed dog on 57th, running toward 2nd Ave. She lives in that direction. Clearly Chester was trying to get home. We ran back that way, calling for him, asking everyone if they'd seen him, asking her doorman, to no avail. I went home and called AMC, then the Humane Society who informed me that Chester was brought in after being struck and killed by a car. Because he was micro-chipped, they'd notified the owner. A dog owner myself, I've been heartsick ever since. I'm so sorry for the woman and Chester. I can't shake seeing the obvious distress and desperation she felt while searching for him. This traumatic, tragic event is the result of The Dog Store's negligence. SHAME on them‼ read more

I've been waiting around a month to get a refund - store owner keeps making false promises, first, he told me he would 'cancel' it so it wouldn't go through. It went through - I called and he told me he would give me a refund. We have had this song and dance at least three times a week since then. I brought in my dog to get her nails clipped, and the woman scoffed at me and my dog, turned her back to me, and yelled at her assistant for "allowing" my dog to come in. She is a pit bull, but very small for the breed. I was about to walk away and then she agreed to do it, and my dog was clearly afraid so I wanted to stay near her but when I approached, the woman snapped at me. "EXCUSE ME MA'AM go sit down". I asked Joanne, the groomer, to give my puppy a short "summer cut." She complained that the legs were very long and I told her this is why I brought him to her and not Smiley, who also did Winston's face in three different lengths and forgot to cut his claws. I, in fact, corrected his face but needed her to even it but not to cut the top knot. I didn't notice until the next day how long the cut was. Plus, Joanne cut his top knot. In any event, he needed to be trimmed as she left his hair way too long -- especially his chest, which tends to knot easily. Since I couldn't bring him back the next day, I called the following day to explain the situation. Joanne was thoroughly rude on the phone arguing with me that I didn't tell her I wanted a short cut. I told her I did and reminded her Smiley had left the legs way too long and this is why I wanted a different groomer. I agreed to bring him to her in an hour, as she suggested. When I arrived, Joanne berated me, "I told you in an hour," she said argumentatively. I told her this was an hour later. Then she asked why I didn't bring him in the day before. I explained if I could, I would have. She said she would call me in an hour or so to pick him up. I waited three hours. Nada. So, I called. She said there were many dogs before him and that he wouldn't be ready before 6 p.m. She said it was my fault because I wanted him shorter. I was surprised that she didn't tell me initially he'd have to wait five hours; I wouldn't have left him there. This is when I decided to pick him up and take him to another groomer. When I arrived, she was thoroughly rude again. Nothing was worth this abuse -- especially when I was paying! I have never dealt with such a rude and unethical people. Obviously, the workers don't care about the dog store losing business. Success in the service business means relying on "repeat" business. This only happens when a business provides good work, good customer service and then earns a good reputation. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THE DOG STORE TO ANYONE!! read more

Finnegan (Finny to those he loves) is a very particular wheaten terrier and he cherishes THE DOG STORE. So do I. Smiley (well-named groomer) is adorable and affectionate as well as accomplished with her charges and Edward, the owner, is simply the nicest, most respectful, most dog-knowlegeable guy. I've had dogs all my life and have known a hundred groomers--and this place is just home to a now, very-classy looking Finnegan. My friend and I wandered into this store, looking for a present for a friend's dog. Wow. How awkward. Two women were in the back, grooming dogs... one of them was screaming at one of the poor barking pups to "SHUT UP! GOD!!! SHUT THE H*LL UP!" while yanking its head up and forcing a brush through its wet and matted fur. Being a dog-owner myself, I was absolutely appalled. Interestingly enough, despite seeing us enter and browsing around the store, the employee continued raging at the dog to the point I was so uncomfortable, I dragged my friend back outside. I would NEVER, EVER bring my dog to this place and feel so terrible for the pet owners who have no idea their pets are being treated so badly in their absence. As for the actual store, there's not much merchandise to look at and the decor is pretty bare. Just frou-frou pet novelties that are unsurprisingly overpriced. Don't bring your poor beloved pets here!! You have no idea how terribly they treat them after you leave!! I also find it "interesting" that the positive reviews of this terrible place are all from first-time Yelpers who have no other reviews. What a sleazy business. read more

Horrific experience and my dog didn't get a haircut. Scheduled his grooming for 12 on a Saturday. I arrive to the store and an older lady rudely tells me that there are many dogs ahead of him and ask me if I can bring him back in 2 hours. I asked if they took walk ins over appts and she angrily tells me that all the dogs before mine also had appointments. Honestly it wasn't the fact that they overbooked it was how mean she was. The owner has a strange albeit cute little pup that sits in a chair on one of the shelves so don't be started if you see a movement out of the corner of your eye. I really like this place. Honestly, I've taken my dog here over the years since 2011 and haven't found another groomer that I trust with my dog. So basically, I bring my dog here to get his nails cut, teeth brushed or just a full grooming. I finally purchased some doggy apparel here also and I'm truly happy with my purchases. The items I bought for my dog are really classy and he loves them. The owner is also another reason why i bring my dog only here... Over the years is attitude is always the same no matter what. He's very laid back and patient and just all around kind. He has a great spirit. I really like him. Another thing I think speaks volumes about this groomer is that he's had the same exact two women work here since I've been coming (2011) who happen to be excellent with their work. And I'm pretty sure they were working there way before I started coming around. They always do a great job on my tippie! I love a place that doesn't have different workers in and out. It's also good for the dog because they get to establish a relationship (with the groomer) over time with grooming. I recommend this place for everyone. Very surprised at these negative reviews. My three Schunzers (my babies) have always been cared for well from Le Chien days to now & the most fabulous grooming ever. They have to put the dogs in cages for their safety. The store is small so the dogs can not have a play area. My babies are driven in my car when I go to The Edog store. The traffic enforcement is ridiculous on 61st St so I call Edward when I am a block away he comes out to get my babies, which go with him without hesitation...& are happy & content when I retrieve them.
