Steve is arrogant, nasty and chauvinistic. I thought he only treated me, and most likely all women, like crap but after reading other posts, I see he can be just as disrespectful to men. If he gets an inkling that there's something he doesn't like about you (God knows what that could be), you are in for the most horrendous ride of your lifetime. I am not over-exaggerating! He treated me with such disrespect; talking down to me, splashing me in the face with water, making me swim extra laps, trying to make me purchase his equipment. Not only did he make my diving certification experience miserable, but I know other classmates felt very uncomfortable watching this abusing treatment. They told me they felt awkward in the class and felt terrible for me. They felt trapped in the situation as well! I've been to other dive shops since my certification (Alpharetta and Marietta) and can say that those folks are most pleasant, eager to assist, eager to please; wanting to ensure you have a positive experience. Steve almost made me afraid to dive, seriously!! I am determined not to let him get the best of me. I have taken some dives since completing the course and find everyone in other shops to be just great. He is a thorn in the side of diving! I guess he treats just enough people nice enough to keep him in business but you have to get on his "good side". Personally, if I were you I wouldn't chance it. Go someplace else for a wonderful experience or just to support a dive shop that has humanity for all! read more

Foul mouth in front of them and very stern and hateful to kids. Store itself is very pricey on equipment and he makes you buy unnecessary things. I recently completed my basic scuba diving classes at this location and I am waiting to do my check-out dive. I was very impressed by the instructors who were helpful and understanding when you had an issue. The instructors took the time to help you through any major issues you may have. Knowing that scuba diving is an expensive hobby, don't be shocked by the sticker price. The quality of the instruction was great. If I find time to make the trip up to DSOM I'll take the opportunity to get some additional practice in. The negative reviews were way off at this location. I recommend you take the time to go up there and talk to the employees yourself. I'd bet you won't have any major issues. read more

I am moving to Hawaii and wanted to review my skills since I have not been diving since 2003. I was originally certified by the shop so it was only natural that I contacted the shop for my re-certification. It was suggested that I take the certification class over, due to the amount of time since my last dive experience. I am so glad that I took the class over, it was well worth the money. I had forgotten some of the basic skills. Also, the instructor Buck went into so many more safety features than my original instructor. This is a great local dive shop. They work hard to get you what you need, and if you can't afford all the equipment needed, then rentals are available. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. This shop also works hard to get together fun and interesting trips. If you are interested in scuba diving then this is the place to visit. read more

I was certified over 20 years ago so I took the class as a refresher, along with my son who was getting certifies, as I had forgeotten most of what I had learned. I thought the the approach to training divers here was very effective. Good techniques and practices were taught in ways that made them easy to grasp. Hence five stars. Reading the other reviews here - it appears the owners personality can rub some people the wrong way, while others enjoy it and see it as a plus. I think overwhelmingly for my class it was a postive experience. For me and my son it fully met hopes and expectations and gets a five star rating. Your mileage may vary. read more

I'm a 30 year+ Divemaster with PADI. This shop is an SDI shop. I wanted my son and daughter to be certified before we went on a Aggressor trip and I was concerned about using SDI over PADI. The shop's instructor said that would be "No Problem." So we completed the classroom and pool part of the training. We really enjoyed it. We also had a great time aboard the Cayman aggressor. Unfortunately, the instructor aboard the Aggressor was PADI certified instructor. He had no problem with the referral paperwork provided by dive shop. He filled out the open water checkout paperwork, stabled the SDI classroom/pool paperwork to the c-card application and sent the whole application to PADI. PADI sent it back saying they don't accept SDI classroom/pool training. I called SDI and they stated they don't accept PADI open water checkout forms. 18 months later this dive shop still has not been able to sort out the paperwork. We still don't have C-cards. My children have completed all the requirements for a c-cards, but the administration of these two dive agencies leave much to be desired. I also don't think the dive shop has stepped up to resolve this problem. They only answer is the redo all the classroom work, pool sessions and open water dives for the tune of $1200. I feel my children have been cheated out of their c-cards and we are still out our training fees. Buyer beware, this dive shop referrals will not be accepted by other agencies, severely limiting your dive vacation options. I also think that PADI and SDI need to get their act together. This experience has not been a good first experience for beginner divers. read more

My husband and I just finished the first part of our open water certification here and it was a wonderful experience. I read the reviews online after the class and felt compelled to share my experience. As someone new to the sport I was not sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. The staff here took such good care of us in the water and took time to not only explain things but to also explain why we do them. At one point during my training I got water in my mouth, my mask and in my nose, I panicked a little drank half the pool and had to be helped to the surface. I was so embarrassed and the staff there were amazing. They pulled me to the shallow end and had an instructor work one on one with me so that we could identify what I was doing wrong and how to fix it. At no time did I feel shamed or was I ridiculed. I asked for help and received it. Scott, Steve, Robert and Jerry offered solutions and recognized people in the group for doing their skills well. That said they will correct you and help you remember if you are doing something that puts you in harms way. There job is to keep you SAFE and ALIVE, in dangerous situations they are stern but it's so you wont get hurt. I would highly recommend this dive shop. read more

My boyfriend has been trying to talk me into scuba for some time now (not that I was ever opposed), but after planning our 7 day western Caribbean cruise for September I figured it was time. So, I went out & bought my class on living social (a GREAT 1/2 off deal), Bobby purchased my fins, snorkel, mask & booties & before I knew it I was studying the books and in the classroom/pool the very next weekend. Passing my class with a 92% & still waiting to do my checkout dive in LochLow Minn. I can honestly say that I am beyond satisfied with the level of results from the staff at The DSOM. Everyone is super friendly, always willing to help, never pushing a sale on you, always giving you all of your options (but recommending the best) & making you feel really comfortable in the classroom & in the pool. The classroom setting is a comical one; full of side "torrents" & great moments under the sea. The pool is driven by a serious, but very gentle instructor named "Buck" who again is willing to help you with any problem. Feel free to go at your own pace & never feel overwhelmed. By all means, be open, honest & ask as many questions as you'd like. They know what fears/concerns your going through because I'm sure they've all been in the same shoes (or booties...as the case may be). The DSOM always have calm demeanor's & know how to perfectly handle each case with ease. I highly recommend the DSOM & am looking forward to my checkout dive. See you guys there! : ) P.S. Ok to start off Stephen is a great guy and contrary to other reviews he is a great teacher. To the person that said He complained that Stephen was condescending yes it is supposed to be fun but he also doesn't want anyone to get hurt by not knowing the material. I learned to dive with him in 2012 and my 12 year old son will be in 2 weeks. He always suggests the best equipment (because it's your life at stake) but never pushes it on anyone. Like I said my son will be getting certified in 2 weeks and I hope he does make sure he knows his stuff before certifying him. I wouldn't want it any other way. Great shop great teacher. Just finished my open water dive course, awaiting my checkout dive. I have to say my class was a lot of fun, the pace and style of teaching made it so much fun. My wife was certified 7 years ago and took the class with me as a refresher and couldn't stop talking about how much better this class was compared to her original. The dive masters that helped were also very good and passionate at what they do. I interviewed 3 other shops for class and each one failed (in many ways) but this shop won because Stephen offered not only my cert (padi) but sdi, tdi, and ssi, take your pick. He gave honest reviews on gear (I fact checked him on google) I couldn't recommend this shop more. read more

I signed up for a scuba certification class with some friends. Stephen was very nice at first when he was taking our money. That soon changed. He really doesn't have the patience to be an educator. He was very rude during all of our sessions, cursing, and insulting people, all the while thinking his jokes were funny. Its too bad he is the owner of the shop because there is no one to report him to. I would never recommend any of my friends or family step foot in that shop. If we could have cancelled and gotten our money back easily we would have, but he made it clear everything was non-refundable. No one should have to pay for a service to be put down and treated like crap. Everyone has personal problems, but you shouldn't take it out on your customers. The cost for the items in the shop is double what I found them to be online, and they do still come with a warranty although he will tell you otherwise. If you can take a class with a different instructor, it may not be so bad. But I definitely do not recommend getting certified with Stephen. I had been looking forward to getting certified in open water and he made this the most miserable experience ever. read more

The entire experience greatly exceeded my expectations. The instructors were patient, explained things very clearly and had a wealth of knowledge to share. They were able to instruct in a way that met all styles of learning and ensured that you walked away feeling competent and able to dive. On top of that it was a great deal of fun. I drove to Gainesville from Atlanta each day, if I hadn't been highly impressed and having a great time I would not have made the drive. I will never do business with this place ever again. The owner/ trainer Stephen is a haughty, kantakerous condescending individual. He is clueless as to the definition of costumer service. I was expecting to pay a higher price for the equipment since that's how businesses make their money, which is fine, but I wasn't expecting to get yelled at, criticized or belittled especially when you're paying to get taught an activity that should be fun and enjoyable. The guy hates teaching students and he doesn't even hide it. The only reason I went through the class was because there were other extraordinary circumstances or else I would have never allowed anyone to talk to me in the manner he did. Bottom line this guy needs a lesson in costumer service and humility. Until he learns that, I would never recommend this place. My husband received his certification 2 months ago and could not be more pleased with the Dive Shop! I am in the process of getting my certification. Finished the class and pool work. Going to TN to do the open water at the end of month. Steve, John and Scott are great instructors! I was having problems clearing my mask in training and John pulled me aside to work with me until I got it. We shopped around about 5 other dive shops and found them to be the most reasonable and professional. When we went there for the first time everyone in the shop seemed to care instead of wanting our money like other places acted. The prices on equipment are good because Steve always seems to have a combo special going on. I highly recommend this dive shop. read more

The DSOM owner, Steve is a joke. It's his attitude that kills this place. He brags way too much that he's been there and done that while showing you all his personal pictures on his flatscreen. (The real hero is Mr. Buck. He does all the hard work at this place) Another thing to note if you take a certification class here you will NOT be able to transfer your credits to another divemaster for full certification. Steve will not allow it. So essentially you end up being funneled into taking his prices only. It's like an amusement park where you're trapped into paying high prices. A place in Marietta called Divers Supply these guys are local & offer good quality gear at way better prices in addition to full refunds if you are not satisfied. Arrogant owner Steve fills class time with stories of his own scuba (ego) trips and underwater heroics. When the class spent time in the pool, he got very angry because a woman in our class was having trouble completing the tasks. His job is to encourage and teach, but he picked on her and I could see her lose her confidence as the weekend class progressed. He openly ridiculed her in front of everyone. He even splashed her in the face repeatedly even after she was coughing against the water. In addition to this, he criticized and belittled another class member who had discontinued the class because he had been hurt by a sharp edge in the pool area and had to get stitches. The guy wasn't even there to defend himself. There are plenty of other places to get certified without being harassed and embarrassed and disgusted in the process. read more

I just completed my Open Water Certification and I could not be happier with the crew and DSOM. They truly took the time to make sure every individual was on track and could do what was expected of them. After reading some reviews I was a little leery of the shop so I went in and checked it out and then did some online gear pricing and found them to be spot on and in most cases cheaper since there wasn't any shipping & handling. They offer fantastic deals and will even throw in your diver certification for free if you buy a full gear set up through them. Also from my experience the crew did everything possible to not make anyone feel uncomfortable and made sure to tell us from the start that if anyone felt offended or upset to let them know and it would be dealt with. I really don't see how anyone could get offended by these guys. Diving is a serious sport that if not done right can end up in the death of you or your buddy. Because of this the class can get very serious at times so some jokes and laughter really help to lighten the mood. Overall I am incredibly pleased and feel that I truly got my moneys worth and I will absolutely be going back for more training and hopefully some awesome dives with the crew. If you want to learn to dive or further your dive training take a trip to the store and just chat with the crew and I guarantee you will have found your new Scuba home. read more

My 10 your old daugher took Advanced Dive Camp with Scott. He was so patient with her. He taught her all of the safety, but made it fun for her also. She finished her check out dive with him over the weekend. His dedication to her dive experience was awesome. He made me feel comfortable with her diving with us. He let us know what she struggles with because of her size, but said her concentration and dedication to safety was great. read more

Thought that I was always given the run-a-round. Had to make several trips to the dive shop before the owner could take 10 minutes of his time to get me a referral. Took me several wasted trips before I could get my Dive Cards, roughly 6 weeks, a broken printer was the excuse. Seems like he found a lot of excuses. Multiple phone calls unanswered. These calls were placed serveral days apart for about 3 weeks. I was told the answer machine was broke. How many businesses would leave their answer machine broke for 3 weeks. Decided I didn't want to do business with them anymore and told them I'd like to cancel my daughter aqua camp and was told if someone else calls in and wanted to join the class then I could get a refund and my daughter wouldn't have to go. Now that the camp is over it has been brought to my attention that a class of 8 was really a class of 11. Just venting and tired of the misinformation and disappointments. I would never recommend that anyone deal with this shop. If you have to go out of your way to go somewhere else, it's highly recommended. read more
