I came to the discovery museum with my granddaughter, who by the way, actually does walk on water! She was up for the weekend from Southern California and this is the perfect place to take an eight-year-old! There were some very difficult puzzles that we all got to work on, she got to play a spelling game using her feet, we adults actually had a lot of fun as well! After several hours of rain teasing, we went downstairs and shopped the gift shop. We each got a little something to continue to tease our brains long after we left the museum! I highly recommend everyone stopping in! Kids and adults alike! There are so many interesting facts and games that Even adults will have difficulty figuring out! After you have worn yourself out in the discovery museum, go next-door and have a doughnut... That's a different review! read more

If you are ever looking for something to do with the kids in Reno besides the hotels and shopping then this is the place for you. I've been coming here for years with my kids when we are in area. It is a large two floor building with a ton of activities to do that can take up the whole day. It's pretty clean and not crowded at all. The exhibit are fun and they newly opened the Mindbener Mansion a mystery room kinda like clue. Each room is filled with puzzles and activities that can be tricky for some adults. On the weekends they even have fun DIY projects. The weekend we went we got to make bath bombs. Our favorite game was spelling fever. The screen prompts you a question and you have to answer it with the letters all scrabbled up on the floor. Each time you have to step on the letter and spell a word with in a minute. Some of the questions are tricky. Notes: No cafe inside, but donut shop located next door. If you want to bring snacks they do have tables and a microwave. They have a community coat rack if you don't want to drag your jacket around. Small store to buy fun items. Bathrooms are on the 1st floor. The museum is good for toddlers and up. Special room just for toddlers as well. I will definitely be going back. read more

It is great that Reno has such a fun and enjoyable museum. Brought our kiddos for a first time visit and had a blast. They both loved the hands on water feature. Had to tear them away kicking and screaming. We enjoyed all the rooms with different age range of activities and learning experiences. There were a few features that didn't work, but overall our family had a blast. The store is a great place for fun games, puzzles, or ideas to get for the kids or whole family. Thanks for making it fun for all. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE. We have been going there for several years now since our son was two years old and now he is seven. He's always very excited to go there and go through the whole entire museum. He's especially excited on the weekends and during vacation weeks when they are more activity tables put up throughout the museum where kids can do arts/craft/experiments with a person guiding them through it. GREAT FOR ANY FAMILY WITH KIDS!! read more

This was a good place to spend a few hours with a 4 yo and a 6 yo on an abnormally rainy day. Prices are fair and staff are friendly.

We are former members of the museum and are former camp members as well. My children absolutely love this place. I have a teenager and a 10 year old that still enjoy the activities and exhibits and of course us as parents do as well. Yesterday (3/14/22) was our most recent visit to the museum and it was a blast. Being spring break we expected the crowd to be insanely busy so we arrived as soon as they opened. The crowd was pretty moderate but made it even that more more fun for the kiddos. They had so many fun and exciting things set up. One of our favorites was creating a rocket and launching. This place is for all ages from children to adults. There is something for everyone to experience. After our visit we visited the little shop and purchased cool items for home. We will be back again! read more

A really cool spot to take your kids. I think buying your tickets on a specific time is a great restriction for COVID but also a nice way for everyone to be able to enjoy the museum without the crowds. There are a lot of things to see and most of them are interactive. The gift shop is cool too and staff are nice. read more

I used to come here a lot more frequently when my children were younger. I especially love the that kids can touch and experience the museum on their level. WIsh Reno/Sparks had more places and opportunities for more family-friendly hands-on activities. This venue has so many wonderful exhibits both permanent and featured opportunities available. The staff is super warm, friendly and informative. It would be really nice if there were more age-appropriate places for those in our community who were from 14 - 20 (in age) as there are limited activities for that group in our area. This venue can be rented out for special events or birthday parties. The museum has their own special events which include Trick or Treating and other such activities. Check out their calendar. Check out their availability for groups, family nights or even plan a field trip. Wednesday's is $5.00 admission after 4:00 pm.. The museum offers volunteer opportunities for adults as well as teens be sure to look at their website for more information. What a great asset to our community. read more

We have not been to the museum for almost a year and a half. Damn you covid!! It was good to be back with the kids and check out their classic, as well as their new offerings. There was a little hiccup with my membership but online support, as well as the supervisor on staff were able to quickly handle it. Kids had fun and everyone was happy. Will definitely return. read more

We visited for the first time during COVID and bought tickets ahead of time for a specific entrance time. Our toddler loved it! She ran around touching everything and fell asleep in the car ride home. I appreciated that they have a separate area for 5 and younger. The staff running the front desk and gift shop areas were friendly and cheerful. We may have to get a family membership so the toddler can visit often and use up her energy! The exhibits are good but the overall aesthetic and design could be prettier. There were benches scattered here and there but probably not nearly enough for non-COVID times. read more

I was lucky enough to come out to RENO to help with an event at the Discovery Museum of Reno.. I must say I used to work at the Indianapolis Children's Museum and I also worked at the Science Center of Des Moines.. And this place has got both of those spots beat! Seriously this Discovery Museum is one of the coolest places I have ever been.. Very educational, hands on, and most importantly FUN for all ages! The staff was incredible! Kestra was our go to gal with all the answers and was always willing to help in anyway she could while we were there! Also all the staff members around the museum made our event go off without a hitch! I picked up a couple cool things from the Museum store, Pitched on a pitchers mound, saw a theremin, saw a class room or two, and had plenty of activities to keep this guy entertained! The layout is great of the museum is great and there was seriously something really fun to do in every room! This place is clean, cool, and fun.. I wish my 2 1/2 year old could have been here.. He would have been losing his mind! So great! Keep up the good work!! read more

This place is such a great place for families of all ages to visit. We stayed here for hours and could have probably stayed longer. The staff is very friendly and the facility is very nice and clean. They have hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility. My kids are asking to go back, we probably will visit again the next time we are in town. Also I gave it five stars because it's reasonably priced to get inside. read more

The Discovery Museum has been one of the most amazing contributions to Reno for kids to play and learn while they are having fun. The museum is double story, with many rooms geared towards different age groups and activities. There is a 5 and under room that we have spent a lot of time in the past few a years. It has a hallow tree kids climb up and a small slide down for the little kids. There is a great little house that shows children a peek at what is under the walls and a sink the kids can use tools and pretend to work on the house. My son loves the foam coal that falls from the conveyer belt, into a train car that you push back and forth. There are other things to do that keep them entertained for hours on here. Then venturing into the rest of the museum there are rooms for workshops, building structures out of wood blocks or building bridges. Downstairs is a huge water table where kids can learn how water moves and play with boats. (Pack an extra dry shirt for after this activity). But don't fret if the kids get soaked, there are air driers in the walls to help. In the middle is a huge climbing structure that looks like clouds and reaches all the way to the ceiling. It's completely netted off for the kids to climb all the way to the top. We buy a membership yearly because there is always something exciting to do here. They bring in new exhibits frequently. Recently we came to see Sue the TRex. The fun doesn't just stop with kids. They have special events for adults. Where you can come see how cocktails are made. (Mixology?) It's a great venue for birthday parties too! At the front of the museum is an amazing gift shop with educational gifts. Perfect to pick up a present for any special event. A toy, game, or an activity the child is sure to love and learn while using. A bonus for new moms, there is a room downstairs that is quite with a changing table. It also has a couch and chairs with a little privacy if you're a nursing momma. All in all. It's a fun way to spend the day indoors, escaping either the heat or the cold that finds its way to Reno. A must visit. read more

This can be a fun & educational place but when it is a weekday during the school year it's lacking. My grandkids are in year round school so have March off. I brought them to the museum & there are more employees/staff members than kids here yet the staff just walks around & don't provide any instruction as to what kids can do with all the different blocks & subject areas. materials are locked up in cabinets & not provided for projects in the Shop. School aged kids get bored easily without guidance/ideas. The admission is the same as going on weekends where there's a lot more available to do. The staff is being paid...how about doing something?? read more

What a great place to take the kids to!! My son had an absolute blast here! They have a kids room and it was just perfect for my 16 month old. There is so much to see and do here, even for the parents! My husband and I enjoyed the museum just as much as our son did (if not more lol). Veterans and family receive discounts as well. Took my family to our museum and had a great time, there is fun for everyone truly. We acted like the seven dwarfs and started the mining conveyer belt in the littles room to dump the play "rocks," we sat by the play fire in the dark room and cooked our newly catches fish and we built a fort and played music in the exploration room. My five foot four inch cousin at one point hoped her daughter got stuck in the three foot high cloud so that she would have an excuse to go in it as an adult! Her wish was granted! I warned my family to take the kid's shirts off before letting them splash in the pyramid lake water feature. I always come with a small towel and extra clothes just in case. Some didn't listen and so my reserve clothes came in handy ! read more

We love the discovery museum! Since moving to Nevada we've been coming almost weekly and never get bored. Get a membership!!! Sooo worth it. My daughter is 2 and there's a whole room geared towards her age group with legos a tree house, a mini house that's "under construction" and lots more. There's tons of other exhibits too that she absolutely loves even though they're a little over her head. We have a blast. Absolutely recommend for all ages. Membership options: Student memberships with college id $35 a year Single membership $50 a year Dual membership (can be 2 adults or 1 adult 1 child) $70 a year. Family membership $119 a year for 2 adults and up to 6 children. Update: just had a baby and discovered that they have room for nursing mothers!! if my rating wasn't already 5 stars I'd give it another. Seriously so impressed with this fun place! read more

This is really a museum for kids. The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum is located in the old Reno city hall, but it has completely changed the interior with a fun and modern science based interactive museum for children. They are located in downtown Reno south of the Truckee River along Center Street. The museum has several interactive exhibits showcasing various science and historical parts of Nevada. There is a little bit of interesting stuff for adults, but the museum really shines for children. The combination of structured play and active education makes this a four star destination for families, especially with the large play structure and water exhibits in the center. Older kids and adults will only be mildly interested in the exhibits and easily bored. Nevertheless, the Discovery Museum is an excellent spot to bring the family to escape the heat or cold and learn about the world. They have lots of staff and programs for kids making this an all day activity. read more

Every time we visit Reno we always make sure to visit this hidden jewel for our boys. We can stay from opening to closing without getting bored. Our experiences has always superb! Small museum full of learning treasures. Great for all ages. During this recent visit, was a little extra for our son Joshua who has ASD. When he learned we'll have a mini trip to Reno he was excited because he knew we will visit the museum. He even brought his own wallet with his savings. Unfortunately he lost his wallet during the visit to the museum because of excitement and got pre-occupied. Chances of finding it was slim because he was all over the museum. Later that afternoon, we tried to email the museum and Mr. Patrick was so nice, he replied to our email that he will contact the guest services. We tried to stop-by at the museum before heading back home, and to our surprise my son's wallet was found. They said a kind hearted lady found and returned it. Thank you Mr. Patrick and to all the staff Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum, you are amazing. read more

Unfortunately a few exhibits were closed or not working properly when we went, so I think that tainted the visit a bit. However, my 10 year old found enough to do and have fun that we bought a membership (an excellent value actually). The cloud climber is pretty epic so if you have a more timid and/or smaller child, you may find yourself climbing up too. We ended up in the workshop and DiVinci areas the most. Though, the workshop wasn't manned, my daughter still had fun. We were able to have lunch at the tables out front. The volunteers were kind and knowledgeable. Overall, it's worth a trip if you have 6 month to 11 year olds :) We'll be back, given that membership and all. read more

Pretty disappointing that my kids ages 6 and 1 came here to enjoy "science" and exploring and thinking freely and creatively but then my 1 year old gets scolded by a worker in one of the rooms. Mind you, she was simply throwing/taking these little pads out and we were practicing putting them back into the big box because she is 1 and stuff like that entertains her. The worker came up to my daughter and said rudely mid playing "let's not throw these out here unless you're going to sit on them" to which I replied oh that's her game she made up and we would put them all back and it's a science/exploring museum right? Then she quickly walked back and said oh sorry but my daughter was actually sad at this point and didn't get to do that anymore. I think she was frightened by the boldness of the worker. Anyway, maybe the workers shouldn't be there to yell at little kids exploring the world around them. We absolutely didn't do anything to bother anyone it was a completely empty room and the kids were just having fun. There were no rules or age limits displayed but maybe they should have some if they don't want kids to have fun? I'd like a refund. We are from out of town and have been to countless science and aquariums and have never been scolded by a worker when my kids aren't doing anything wrong. read more

Loved this place. My husband, parents, and 4 year old son went there today and had a blast. Adult prices are $12 and kids over 1 and senior citizens are $10...so worth the admission. We ended up getting yummy donuts next door before going in. There are a lot of mind games that actually stumped the adults. It's great for all kids (including those that are kids at heart) because there were so many different activity rooms. We ended up going to almost all of them and kept my son and us busy for about 3 hours. It's a well organized place. My son loved the huge water table and the climbing structure. I would highly recommend bringing extra clothes if your child loves water because my sons shirt got soaked and he is a tall 4 year old. He just loved playing with the boats, balls, and Circle floating toys that float through a lake where you can move the rocks around, pump water, stop water, and make waves. read more

During Covid this place was OK. First you have to have a reservation to even renter and some of the facility is closed due to Covid restrictions. The price should not be normal price since all the rooms are not available. $37 for two adults and 1 child for is kinda pricey. I bet during regular times this would be a really cool place. Covid has put a huge damper to way too many things. read more

The term "Museum" carries several preconceived notions with it and this place both lives up to them AND blasts far beyond them. If you are expecting to look at a few dioramas and call it a day, then you are in the wrong spot. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to play, because this is interactive learning at its best; featuring everything from Precambrian dinosaur dig sites to alternative energy of the future. We stayed from opening until closing, and we didn't even get to see an entire wing of the museum (sorry Nevada history, we'll start with you next time!) Here are just a few of the highlights from our trip. 1. The cloud climber. This is three stories of overlapping platforms for kids (and adults rescuing stuck kids) to climb and play on. Don't worry, it's safe. 2. Painting. Making stamps out of melons, flowers out of coffee filters, and just sloping paint on walls, the art options are plentiful here. 3. Construction and building. We built a giant arch, that required us to reach out to other visitors to help us stack and hold blocks while attempting to get the center "keystone" in place. They also have several boxes of Keva blocks to build towers and castles with. Everyday they have a project to build in "the shop," it often requires tools and instruction, both of which are provided freely. 4. Little tykes play room. The 5 and under playroom is a peaceful place to play in the afternoon when the cloud climber and river play areas get crowded with big kids. There is so many more things to see and do here, our family will have to come back because 1 day wasn't enough. read more

FANTASTIC space! There's so so much to do, discover and just enjoy! What an amazing place! We were visiting Reno/Tahoe and decided to come here with my 4yrold and 2.5 year old. BOY did we have fun! There is something for everyone and kept the kids and adults occupied for many many hours! The climbing cloud was pretty crowded as there were various groups of camp kids. I wish they had kept that section closed for either camp groups or general public. Some of the kids were older and it was a bit nerve wracking to see them climbing with younger kids. Would definitely come back! read more

I spent almost 3 hours here with a friend. There were still a lot left to "discover" and we could've stayed longer if we had more time. We had so much fun with the hands-on experience and built a lot of things. There were many "brain exercises" that got us really intrigued. The staff were quick on putting things back to the original state, so the next guests could have the same genuine experience and the surprise wouldn't get spoiled. There were enough supplies like building blocks, pencils, papers, etc., so we didn't have to wait for our turn. The facility was well-maintained. This place is definitely family-friendly, but it is also a nice place to hang out with your date and friends. They also had 3-D printers that can print some really cute figurines upon request. It did take some time but it was fascinating to see the figurines being printed in person. If you can't wait, you can ask for a ready-printed one. They would show you what they have and let you choose. However, they only allow one figurine per person. The only drawback was that we didn't see any live demonstration during our visit. I'm not sure if it was because we came on a Sunday's late afternoon. Overall, we had fun and really enjoyed our visit. read more

Pay $30 for myself and two kids for the day or $99 for the year. MMmkay. Not a tough choice there. We are avid museum members and having just moved from Chicago where we held Field Museum, Arboretum and Children's Museum memberships, it's not much of a surprise that within two months of parking our lives here, we'd join one here now, too. I'd say this was our first membership, but that title goes to Sam's Club. At first, I was... underwhelmed. For my 2 and 4yo kiddos, it seemed empty. But, we started to peel back the layers (and carry a stool everywhere because WHY are exhibits always so tall?), we found ourselves mostly pleased with all we saw and explored. We spent SIX hours there today. No, really. My kids had some fear that if we left the two front doors, we would never return and well, we will. For Reno, it's actually quite impressive and great for kids who are walking all the way up to early middle school. It's mostly science, but part just play and my kids definitely enjoyed the center area of climbing and water. That water exhibit is one of the best I've seen in museums. We'll be back. Gotta make the most of that membership fee, after all! read more
