Fun night out! Food was average but the show why we were there. Definitely worth the try.

Dinner Detective is a fun show but there are some problems with execution (pun intended). We made reservations through the website, and that was no problem. The show books up several weeks in advance, so plan ahead. The show is held in the Library room on street level of the Emily Morgan Hotel in downtown San Antonio, right next to Alamo Plaza. Valet parking is $20, but there are cheaper surface lots and garages nearby. The check in process was slow, but it gave us time to size up the other guests--more on that later. Also, you can order drinks from the bar in the lobby and bring them with you into the library . . . that's actually the only way to have a drink with your dinner. When you check in, you choose an alias. There were a lot of "Sherlock," "Holmes," etc. in our audience, as well as some quality puns. The aliases obscure the suspects (actors) among the audience. The cheerful hosts passed out sheets with instructions, investigation questions, and room to take notes. We started talking to our neighbors and got suspicious about the person sitting next to me. Then she jumped out of her chair and the game was on! The fact that she had been mingling with us in the lobby just minutes earlier . . . wow! The actors who played the detectives kept a stream of improv banter going as they called members of the audience up to participate. Improv is often messy, but it seemed as if those two cast members had not been paired up before -- a few dropped cues, etc. Nevertheless, they kept the action moving fast and made the jokes topical. The humor included sexual innuendo -- one of many reasons why the show is not suitable for children. Our table enjoyed ruminating over the clues -- laminated copies of documents that the detectives found in their investigation. After dessert, guests turned in their guesses, and then the detectives did the big reveal. We were intrigued and laughing all the way through. During breaks in the action, the waiters bring courses of dinner: salad, entree, dessert. The default drink is iced tea; I requested water, but didn't get enough refills. The salad was adequate. The fish was billed as "blackened"; rather, it was lightly seasoned, but still palatable. The red velvet cake had good presentation but the cake was dry. Events like this where dozens of people are served at once are a challenge for kitchen. The "dinner" part of "dinner detective" was OK but could have been better. It was an enjoyable experience, but one visit is probably enough. I would recommend it to friends, especially if they enjoy challenges like escape rooms -- the live cast makes Dinner Detective San Antonio even more fun. read more

I just can't recommend. First, the venue. It is in a hotel conference room. The acoustics are terrible and we had a very difficult time hearing the 2 main actors. There are minimal decorations like a taped silhouette on the ground and a couple cards on the tables. It felt more like a conference than a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. The food is below average. Kind of like cafeteria food, or bad wedding food. You can tell it was made ahead of time, the chicken was slightly dry. The story...I won't give away details; however, it was difficult to follow (again, reference the acoustics). The QR clues helped, but the story didn't develop well. I could not tell what was happening or why, and the ending was VERY rushed. All of a sudden the main actors just started reading from a script explaining the murder. I didn't understand why we bothered filling out the "who done it" form, they only gave us roughly 10 minutes to complete anyway. Both my wife and I thought "well, that was slightly entertaining; however we were both left wanting more". It's just missing a few elements that could make it so much better. It needs more/better props/sound effects. The storyline development is unbalanced. Way too slow during the first 2 acts and then WAY too rushed at the end. read more

The show was good and actors animated, I however, thought the request for tips for the staff was a bit uncomfortable. The envelopes being on the table was enough, saying they just worked for tips and basically were in need because one had their car towed was rude in my opinion. Paying tax and gratuity up front meant to me that would be covered. I ordered the mushroom and my husband chicken; I'm sad to say the dinner fell painfully short. The chicken was dry and hard, the mushroom cooked twice as long as it should have been. There were a handful of potatoes and two pieces of broccoli, everything was cold - I know it's difficult to serve that many people at once and have it appropriate temperature but not impossible. The menu says tea, coffee, and the 4 courses. The one appetizer I got was fabulous, there were enough for patrons to get one each basically. During dinner I asked for a glass of tea, it was brought out and was $4...huh? I mentioned it was stated on the menu, the girl shrugged and repeated it was 4 bucks then waited for payment. No water was ever offered to be refilled despite all glasses and refill carafe empty. I had high hopes for the dessert as it looked good, it was as dry as cardboard with equal taste. We enjoyed the show, like I said, but the food and service was a real letdown for the price. read more

Loved the show great actors and food! Great atmosphere will definitely recommend. Had a Halloween costume contest and it was interactive.

The detective night was barely okay. The actors really tried, but the food was terrible. The whole evening reminded me of something a high school drama class would put together for a spaghetti dinner. Don't waste your time and money. read more

I had heard of theater type productions like this before and it was absolutely amazing from start to finish. The cast was engaging and the mystery was enthralling! Luckily for me, they already had a murder to concentrate on, so I got away scot-free! The food was good, I had the fish. The closest thing to a complaint that I could think of is that I was so involved with trying to figure out who the bad guy was, I only ate half my meal. Bring cash. They have a cash bar and pass around tip envelopes for the actors, they're definitely worth it though. Also, if Kim Possible from the 4/9 show is reading this, it's Matches Malone. I felt we might have had a spark, but you were there with your family for your Aunt's birthday and I chickened out before asking for your number. If you felt the same, please let me know! read more

Totally over rated event. Dinner tasted like it was transferred over from frozen meals on wheels. And omg the amount of work that was involved and requested of us patrons was just too much and frankly ridiculous. The two main characters of the play spent most the night singling people out and making them stand up at their tables just to reducible them. They'd ask them questions just to insult their answers. Also No fun. Save your money, I would've much rather spent these $$$ on absolutely anything else. :/ read more

First, the downside: the room is not great and the chicken was dry. The mystery was good, with actual, logical clues. The actors were quite good and in control of the room. They built up the energy and drew out the crowd. It was a good crowd - I particularly enjoyed discussing serial killers and suicide methods with a woman at our table - and willing, but the actors worked for us. And the vegetables still had a bit of texture and the simple salad was quite nice, more than making up for the dry chicken. read more

The Dinner Detective in San Antonio delivered 100%! The actors were really great at improv and perfect at covering for planted actors. Overall, we had a really fun experience! Why 4 out of 5 stars? The bar was limited (no straight soda - only sugar soda's) but the bartender was very accommodating. TAKE CASH! The venue had thoughtfully provided the dining space with 7-11 lighting, so bright LED. We hoped they would create a better lighting experience, but it was not to be. The food took FOREVER! The show started at about 7pm and we had a salad that was pretty wilted when we were seated. The two options for dressing were raspberry vinaigrette and a seriously thick substance that I assume was Caesar, but looked more like cream gravy (and had the same consistency). After the plates were cleared, about 30 minutes later, we were served bread rolls, We had no bread plates, so, all of us starving people just did our best with the bread and butter. We were *finally* served our dinner at about 8pm. Our party ordered chicken for ease and it was actually very good. Not much in the way of veg (2 stalks of Rapini broccoli and a ton of mashed potatoes). For dessert, we were served half thawed cheesecake. Food issues aside, the acting was spot on! The improv was great! I paid a suspect package extra, and it was really funny! My 'victim' was totally surprised and enjoyed the whole experience thoroughly! Lastly, the parking issue was troublesome, but has nothing to do with the Dinner Detective, it's more about the venue. We paid $20 for parking at nearby lot. It would have cost about the same if we had valeted, but we didn't see the signs :(. So, compliments to the Dinner Detective for a great show. Purchasing tickets for this show is a joke...... If I could rate this with negative stars I would. I was invited by friends to a show on June 9th that they had seen on Groupon. I had some questions about the show so I called customer service and the representative told me that there was no June 9th show. I explained to her that Groupon was selling tickets to the June 9th show here in San Antonio and she told me not to purchase them. They were falsely advertising the show and this wasn't the first time that they have done so. She apologized for the inconvenience and took my information to follow-up with me and future shows. Within a day or so I received an email saying that tickets were available for purchase for the show on June 9th. This was a little frustrating considering what I was told by the Murder Mystery Show representative. I went online and it was no longer available on Groupon and the website still hadn't been updated with the June 9th show. I've been traveling for work these past couple of weeks an hadn't followed up to purchase the tickets. Today I attempted to get the tickets and again the website was still not updated with the June 9th show. After attempting to call the box office and not getting through I replied to the original email. The individual was less than pleasant and on multiple occasions I requested that they call me to resolve the issue. It would be easier, and quicker, to speak over the phone to resolve the issue but for whatever reason they did not want to talk. Ultimately I received this not so pleasant email from the "mystery" employee at the box office: Sir---I am so entirely confused and quite frustrated. You spent this morning running circles around our customer service department about how we messed up and it's our fault that you don't have tickets. You claimed you wanted to have a GroupOn price honored and didn't even have a Groupon?? My apologies, sir but we cannot devote further time to this matter as it has been a gigantic waste of our time on a very busy Monday morning. The host was so full of energy. There was never a dull moment. He had the room engaged and laughing from the time we sat down till the time we left. Truly talented. I enjoyed every minute of the show. Great job!! read more
