As a world traveller, I love different ethnic cuisines. Ethiopian is in my top three. As a native…read moreFrankfurter, I love exploring my birth city's restaurants. Therefore, I discovered this hidden treasure years ago. (Before that I tried a couple of other similar venues in the city and was disappointed.) I first learned about Ethiopian food in Atlanta, GA in the early 80's while attending university. Good versions and bad versions. Since then I have experiences both in diverse places such as Boston, NYC, St.Paul (MN), Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Houston, Paris (F), Rome (I), Berlin (D), and some cities I don't remember. Lalibela in Frankfurt is one on the top 5 restaurants. The food is authentic and flavorful. Both veggie and meat dishes. (Many times only the meats are spicy and the veggies are bland.) Plus the owners are a true delight. Friendly, cheerful, they showcase their culture. We were just back yesterday with my best friend from college in Atlanta. She has been living in Hamburg for decades. I had not seen her for over 30 years. She came to Frankfurt to meet up with us while we were in Germany. I offered her several different cuisine options and she wanted Ethiopian. She loved all of it. Nostalgic flavors. Authentic smells. Plus the amazing hosts! We will always call me back.

A google search gave us LaLiBeLa Ethiopian food. None of us had ever tried that before so decided to give it a go. The place is very clean and comfortable. The owner was serving us and she was one of the nicest people you could ever ask to meet. One of us has very specific dietary needs and she went out of her way to make something that fit the bill. She succeeded! If you're in Frankfurt and want to try something different and delicious, you won't be disappointed if you give LaLiBeLa a try!

The restaurant was surprisingly quiet for a Friday evening, a lot of empty tables. The menu felt a…read morebit small. The waiter recommended the grilled chicken with sweet potato fries over the goulash. Unfortunately, the chicken was slightly pink in the center, under seasoned, and dry. The sweet potato fries were delicious, very crispy. They came with a yogurt-based sauce that felt out of place and didn't complement the dish at all. Poor choice of sauce... The fried prawns were great and I really liked the cilantro sauce it came with, definitely the highlight of the meal. As for the draft beer, it was just okay. Nothing memorable. Overall, it wouldn't be my first choice for dining out nor would I recommend it.

We had folks from various locations flock over to Frankfurt. We knew one another from various collaborations. As an example, my colleague from Piscataway had hosted a training session for our writing tool the previous year. That trip alone bonded us, along with two folks from Frankfurt. We also had colleagues from India, China, and Sweden with us. We all met by the train station close to work and took the bus to the restaurant. It was a decent ride, although it wasn't too long. I liked how high the ceiling is at the restaurant. We walked in and took a table for twelve of us. I got along well with the manager of Frankfurt's writing team. She was kind to break down the menu to us. She highly recommended the spatzle, which is yummy, buttery pasta. My dish came with slow-cooked beef in a rich wine sauce. This dish was heavenly! I loved it so much. The spatzle was indeed buttery and tasty. The beef was so tender that you didn't really need to cut it with a knife, but I did to be polite. Nothing was left! I also had a stein of local beer. It was smooth and good. It was an excellent night chatting with colleagues and unwinding. It was a wonderful restaurant suggestion. I would love to revisit this restaurant should I ever have the chance to return to Frankfurt. (7)
