The bed was one of the best of our 3 week journey and the next morning found the breakfast room sunny and inviting. There was plenty to eat, with porridge and berries as a preamble to a full breakfast selection. As a treat, we had our laundry cared for and took advantage of prepared sandwiches for our sojourn into Portsmouth for the day. We enjoyed ourselves so much, we decided to stay over 3 nights. The pub just down the road a short walk was inviting and had a nice selection of well prepared meals. We will definitely return if we can.

The sprung mattresses were the worst we have ever experienced -- extremely soft and sinking deeply under our weight. I only weigh around 57 kg, so I was shocked by how much mine sank. My mum also found hers uncomfortable, while I developed significant back pain which affected our time at Goodwood and meant we had to cut both days short. We even considered buying inflatable mattresses, but it was too late in the evening. I politely asked the owner if there was an alternative and understood they were fully booked. However, I found the response dismissive, focusing instead on the mattresses being "high quality" and the owner personally finding them comfortable. Room 1 was also very noisy. Guests gathered to drink and talk directly outside our door, people were constantly coming and going, and toilets and showers elsewhere in the building were clearly audible from our beds, adding to the lack of sleep. The bathroom was also disappointing. There appeared to be mould around several seals and fittings, the shower tray flexed noticeably underfoot and felt unstable, and the showerhead had significant limescale build-up, causing water to spray in different directions. There was also a recessed light directly above the shower with a large open cavity around the bulb, which we found concerning in such a wet area. At around £500 for two nights, we were very disappointed with the overall standard and comfort. The lack of sleep and resulting back pain significantly affected a trip we had been looking forward to for a year. Based on our experience, if you still decide to book, I would definitely avoid Room 1.

The pub is steeped in history and that is reflected in the well kept but near un-touched interior. They have some great ales on tap and all are served with a friendly smile and, if not too busy, are happy to talk through some of the pub's history. The garden here in the summer is fantastic. The views are breath-taking and they run a barbecue every Sunday which of course, does attract a huge crowd so either get there early or have some extra bags of patience with you. We head there without fail once a year with a big group of friends and spend the whole afternoon eating and drinking beer, I highly advise you to do the same!

It turned out to be just what I had hoped to find, charmingly unpretentious, run by a warm and friendly couple of guys who were helpful in every way, from picking me up at the train station to helping me work out transportation to and from the performances and for my travel back (I decided to stay on 2 days after the operas, to get in a bit of local sightseeing and they were helpful there too) . The food was simple and tasty, and they made an effort to please individual tastes and needs. The room was simple and comfortable, with a charming view from the window of the downs, and the bed just great. No great chandeliers and snootiness, just friendliness, helpfulness and calm, exactly what I was looking for. I certainly will go back if my good fortune takes me back to that part of the world
