We worked with Natalie and Krystal to learn a choreographed tango for our first dance at our wedding and they were so full of enthusiasm and warmth all throughout that we knew we were at the best place to create something special and memorable. We were looking for a location primarily in Chicago to learn a choreographed wedding dance just a month out from the special day. Due to the time constraint, most places were skeptical or only wanted to teach the basics. We were referred to Natalie and from the first introduction, you can tell she would not only be fun but also invested in your success and confidence when it comes to the performance. At times, it also felt like a collaboration as Natalie was always open to incorporating our ideas and also didn't shy from challenging us to go bigger with moves we might not have considered but she believed we could accomplish. We switched to working with Krystal midway as Natalie recovered from a broken ankle (but who still showed up!) and it was a seamless transition. We also got extra practice time thanks to Natalie's husband, who also helped capture video, opening the studio while there was a winter storm. There are not enough compliments to give the Move the Beat family for how personable and genuine they all are. Come wedding day, we felt prepared, comfortable and excited to dance thanks to the creativity and instruction from Move the Beat. Their ability to break down, encourage, fine-tune and guide you through everything was natural and great. Well worth the visit from the city!

She is extremely supportive and encouraging to those that she works with and will go the extra mile to help. She took two people with subpar skills and made them look like pros. Quick info: Small classes All women, age 18 and up No drama Pole dancing focus Other dance/fitness classes Drop-in's okay for certain classes Affordable The main focus is on pole dancing classes but this studio is not just limited to pole dancers. They offer other classes for dance and physical fitness, such as Flex Appeal (flexibility) and At The Barre (adult beginner ballet). They allow drop-in's for certain classes that are affordable, in case you want to try a class that's not pole dancing and don't want to commit to buying a whole class session up front. They also offer a virtual "punch card" online so you can try different classes. There's no drama here: the students and instructors are women aged 18 and up. All shapes, sizes, and fitness levels come here. No one is too big or too old. The classes are small and the instructors can decrease or increase the challenge of the class for your own personal needs. I like that I am encouraged to strive to be better but am not pressured to keep up with the girl next to me. Everyone's goals, needs, and abilities are different.

The newest offering is a yoga/Pilates class for adults. My daughter has taken lessons here for 4 years, and all her instructors have impressed me with their professionalism and ability to work with younger kids. (I like them all, but here's my tip: go with Pat Doyle if you can. She is simply wonderful; my daughter took her storybook theater class last summer and loved her!). The facility has four spacious dance studios with sprung-wood floors. Weekends are always the craziest times; the narrow hallways are forever congested. The changing room is chaotic and too small to contain all the students; I try to avoid it. In the past year, McDonald Dance opened a small dancewear boutique, which is handy if you need leotards, tights, hair accessories and the like. The tuition for a 17-week semester (once a week classes) ranges from $130-$235. The end of the year culminates in a school-wide recital performance, at Barrington High School, in May. There are a number of dance camps and classes offered for summer.

We moved out of the area a while ago and but still drive the distance to continue at this studio. My son (14) and daughter (9) will not even consider going anywhere else. They love it here. The new owner is one of the kindest people I have met. All the teachers have a true love for dance, and it shows in their teaching. This studio focuses on proper technique to avoid injury and create beautiful dancers. The spring recital is the cherry on top. Instead of watching a million individual dances by class level, NWBA puts on an actual ballet. The costumes, sets and lighting is top notch. My kids love feeling part of a show and dancing with other levels. They get a taste of what a professional ballet dancer gets to do. For family and friends in the audience following a ballet story is way more enjoyable than a traditional recital.

NWBA is a family run, caring studio where teachers and students support and encourage thoughtful development and solid ballet technique. My family has been dancing with NWBA since the doors opened in 1985 when I started my ballet journey, I've recommended friends, and now my daughter studies at NWBA from an early age. Of course their children/young adult programs are great, but they also have fantastic Adult Ballet classes where the teachers will actually teach and support you at whatever level you desire. I highly recommend this 5+ star dance studio!
