The instructors make an effort to connect with you on a personal level and I have become close to many of them. They really care about technique here and, as I have visited other studios, I have noticed that DMA does a really spectacular job. Not only this, but they are really well-rounded. You can get a quality education in ballet, jazz, modern, musical theater, tap, and hip hop with teachers that are great in their field. They are home to even some professionally-affiliated companies like the Chicago Repertory Ballet Youth Ensemble which I was a part of for 2 years, and the Trifecta Youth Ensemble which I have been a part of for a while. No matter what style you're interested in, they have something for you. They have a musical theater program that brings in agents and gives help with self taps from working actors, they have a ballet conservatory, they have hip hop companies, a tap company, jazz company, and a modern company, as well as a mini Glenbrook South poms "prep" company and an Edgebrook All-Stars poms "prep" company. If you just want to take classes with no companies, they have that, too. Don't be fooled, just because they have many different styles doesn't mean they are lesser quality, because DMA puts care into every style they have. As a mainly ballet-lover, I am able to do a variation (dance) en pointe as well as be in the modern company. It's great because even though I did not like ballet as a kid, I grew to love it in the classes I took and was able to decide to take more of them because of the opportunities here. I was even able to go to the YAGP National FInals in Tampa because of the fantastic ballet company. Needless to say, please consider DMA. I am close to being a senior in high school and will cherish the time I had here. I really feel well-prepared as a dancer and a person because of my time here. Her advanced level dancers, particularly the ballet classes, are by far superior in terms of technique and artistry compared to any other local studio/program. I've seen many dance shows locally (being a retired ballet dancer myself) where there are students on pointe shoes who do not have the strength to be on pointe yet, and its scary because these girls could get hurt. Not at Galina- no one goes on pointe who is not physically and technically ready for pointe no shoes.Furthermore, you can see the passion and love of dance in the student's faces- no one would go through such a rigorous, Russian based training without truly loving to dance. The owner encourages this love of dance by keeping things fresh and exciting, and inspiring each student individually. All of the other teachers are alumi of Galina, so know they are teaching in the same proper way that they were trained. I was so impressed with the dancing and the colorful costumes that I looked at their website and found they offered dancing classes, plus the classes were very affordable. The school is located in Des Plaines and have two Dance Studios. They also have a Hawaiian store that sell an extensive collection of Hawaiian shirts and dresses; as well as all things Polynesian. The classes are separated by Women's, Men's, and Children's dance classes, and they also offer Ukalele and Polynesian drum classes; as well as Fire knife Dancing for men. Shortly after seeing the Barefoot Hawaiian dancers perform at Tiki Terrace, I enrolled in their Kane (men's class) Dance class every Monday night. The owner and instructor Gwen Keneddy was very nice and patient and really knew her Polynesian culture. The classes were taught in a fun and safe environment, and I learned allot of the dances in a short amount of time. After a few weeks of taking classes, I was invited to perform with the Barefoot Hawaiian dancers at local outdoor events and parades, while pretending to be a Hawaiian native. Lol. The school provided the materials to make the Polynesian costumes, and we paid and assembled the costumes ourselves with help from the more experienced older girls (or the Hula Nazis, as they were nicknamed). I have been with this Dance troop a little under two years before I decided to retire from dancing, but overall, I enjoyed this part of my life. I will never forget the people I met and befriended during my time with Barefoot Hawaiian; it was like joining a member of a large Hawaiian family and Gwen was our mother. If you have an appreciation of Polynesian culture; I suggest you enroll in their dance, Ukalele or drum classes. You will come out with a more appreciation of Polynesian culture, and walk away with a new family. The classes are held one day a week, during the evening, and a normal semester is 8 weeks and only $10 per class.

I was here with my 5 year old son for a birthday party. It's not terrible, but it is considerably…read moresmaller and less tidy than International Gymnastics in Mt. Prospect. Located in a office court off of West Lake Ave., this is a former factory converted into a gym. The conversion is not quite complete in my opinion. There is a kids fun gym and another, larger and more sophisticated, gym with advanced equipment. We were in the smaller gym and it looks rough around the edges. (see photos) Still, it was fun for the kids. They accommodated a group of thirty 5 & 6 year olds and managed the group very well, God bless their souls. I found it somewhat disturbing when we received a birthday invitation from the place and it had a waiver sheet folded and tucked into the pre-printed invite card from Dreams.The waiver, which had to be signed by a parent and witnessed by a gym employee, had a lengthy list of various and increasingly gruesome potential injuries possible, ranging from simple bruises to torn muscles, fractures and paralysis. Strange we did not have guests need to sign one for a party at International Gymnastics. Seeing the potential dangers and risks, I was tempted to send in my fearless Stunt Baby to substitute for my older son at the party, but my 5 year old handled it just fine. There were two instructors who had the kids do warmups and run a basic obstacle course, followed by extensive play in their sponge cube pit. They also had a Tumble Track trampoline next to the pit for the more adventurous jumpers. The instructors (Nicki and Vicki) did a great job keeping track of the kids and making sure they played safely. At the same time, the gym leaves a lot to be desired. The sides of the sponge pit are not padded like at International Gymnastics. Columns in the gym are crudely padded with folded mats wrapped in duct tape. The truck bay doors are covered in large sheets of clear plastic. There are stacks of insulation panels piled up on the sides above the party rooms. The condition of the padded floor, carpeting, mats, and the sponge cubes even, shows a significant amount of wear. The party room itself was a bit crowded but fit 30 kids at a series of long tables. A second party room down the hall allows them to have one party after another while alternating rooms. Therefore, we were not rushed to get out promptly at the designated end time. Certainly a good time but as a family we're sticking with International Gymnastics for classes and parties in the future.
