It seems there is no care or concern for the people who live uptown in this area. Constant delays and switching from express to local with no warning. At least the train conductor could announce this. At Fordham there is a wall between local and express and so when the express comes on the local track you just stand there a miss it. You cannot get a seat and it is completely overcrowded. Rates keep going up but for us uptown we see no change! Also the overcrowding causes tempers to flare and is dangerous but THEY DONT CARE ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR GROUP OF RIDERS! Tons of money pouring in but certain areas get more attention than others. read more

Overall this train is both reliable and unreliable. I mostly only take it in the Bronx, but in the West 4th street area, it does serve a purpose especially when heading to that West Village area. The train at night after 11 PM or Midnight is generally horrible but so are most other trains. At least for the most part it does not completely go out of service like some lines or just operate terrible like The L train there days going from Brooklyn to Manhattan. I definitely recommend taking this train especially if you are in Brooklyn or on the last stop, 205 Street in the Bronx. One of the most reliable train lines in NYC, the D train has been there for me in brightest day & darkest night (wait, isn't that the Green Lantern oath?), through thick & thin, in sickness & in health. No, I don't want to marry it, but ol' "D"-pendable is always there like an old friend and we go back a loooong way. From my teens when I worked at the New York Public Library on 5th Ave to my first real job after college in Herald Square, the D has been my go-to commuter line to get to work along with the thousands that ride it everyday. From Grand St in Chinatown to 34th St - Herald Square is a mere 3 express stops and the ride is only 10 minutes or sometimes even faster. I remember one time I set a personal record rolling out of the apartment, running down the stairs as the train was pulling in and sitting in my cubicle in under 15 minutes. The D train is one of the longest in the MTA subway system running express through most of it from 205th St & Grand Concourse in the Bronx, through Manhattan, across the Manhattan Bridge and all the way to Coney Island in Brooklyn (30 stops, yes I counted). It takes you to some of the most iconic sights & areas in NYC. Yankee Stadium, Columbus Circle, Rockefeller Center, Herald Square (Macy's) & Greenwich Village are all stops along the way. It's one of the few lines I've ridden from end to end, though once or twice it was not by choice that I ended up at Coney Island after a night of partying and the next thing I hear is the conductor yelling "LAST STOP"! read more

The D was voted as the most reliable line in the city in the annual straphangers survey...so that speaks volumes. Most of my trips in the city involve using the D - my boyfriend lives a whopping 2 blocks from one of the northern stops on the line. Fun history fact: 205th Street was never meant to be a terminal, the line was SUPPOSED to go farther, but alas - it never got built beyond what it is, mostly because of lack of money. The IND system (yes, before the MTA there were THREE SEPARATE COMPANIES running the subway) is probably the most overbuilt...do Bedford Park Boulevard, Fordham Road, etc stations need to be as big as they are? Absofrigginlutely not. Bedford Park, in fact, has an abandoned mezzanine. And to those of you bitching about the R68's (old) vs the R160's (new) running on the line: They're 27-29 years old and there's 2 new car contracts (R179 and R211) that aren't even going to retire them - so you'll be waiting a while for new equipment! (R179's will replace the 50 year old C trains and the 45 year old J/Z trains and R211's the crappy Staten Island Railway and A train cars that are 45 years old) read more

We took the D train from Rockefeller Center to Yankee Stadium. We were running a bit behind because we slept in late. I was nervous about not making it in time but we actually got to the stadium about 1/2 hour early! It did not seem *too* crowded on the way to the game (Saturday, 1:00 game). Leaving the game was a different story. Now I know what sardines in a tin can feel like. I LOVE that it drops you off RIGHT at Yankee Stadium. Suggestion: The advertisements on the subway should urge travelers to keep up on their hygiene. Perhaps have some soap or deodorant ads?? My mom and I got to enjoy the pungent B.O. arm pit of a guy holing a pole literally inches from our faces. I could barely breathe. :-) read more

There are plenty of trains I loathe but there are only a handful that I love. The D Train, in all of its 1980s-orangey-old-school-smelly glory, has become one of my favorites over the past few years. Sure it's not perfect, but perfection is not a mark achievable by anything remotely MTA related. So 4 stars it is for the D and my never ending kudos for it. In short, it is reliable. Seldom do trains adhere to schedule (see the G, 1, 7, or N), but the D has been surprisingly punctual per the MTA trip planner listed times. In a move that will surely jinx myself, I haven't yet encountered any major train issues (service problems, broken cars, train delays, etc.) yet. Even the crazies / bums are relatively behaved on this line. The route, which goes between Stillwell Ave in Coney Island and the 205th Station in the Bronx, is as good as they come. Express from 125th to 59th? So fast even the mariachi panhandlers can't finish Guantamera. A short trip to Harlem from Midtown? Ain't no thang but a Charles fried chicken (http://www.yelp.com/biz/charles-country-pan-fried-chicken-new-york) wang. Herald square to west 4th in a straight shot? Union square is oh-so-insignificant. And of course, braving the entire ride to the edge of Brooklyn in Coney Island is so easy, a caveman can do it. D train, you may be the train I hate the least. Why? - you go from 59th St/Columbus Circle to 125th St with NO STOPS IN BETWEEN. Do you know how MAGIC that is? Seriously, 66 blocks? I call you the Dirty D...but guess what? You're *my* Dirty D. Getting me to work in less than 1/2 an hour from Harlem door to Midtown door sometimes isn't an easy feat...but you manage to do it. It may be difficult at times to find a seat during rush hour, but I tend to find a seat most of the times...and you're generally not so crowded, so I can't complain. I'll take the word of other commuters that the 'D' train is reliable, far-flung, and fast. I agree that as it comes down from Manhattan and through to Brooklyn--once it passes 9th St (Park Slope) a lot of irksome yuppies and hipsters DO disembark. [Good riddance!] But where I pick up the 'D' is as-an-option, as-an-occasional-alternative-to-the-N, as it speeds from Atlantic/Pacific to 36th St in Sunset Park. Just one short hop. So I can't comment on any other aspect of this line. Here--for this length of its route--it runs 'staggered' with the N, intermittently to that express. Therefore it offers welcome relief to the 'N'-scrutable mysteries of the 'N'-noying schedule of operation. That's what I care about --and as far as that goes, the 'D' is okay. I trust it. Happy to save two minutes over the 'N' by stepping inside and grabbing a pole. But--I have to say, I would never sit down in a D train seat. Because this is what I really have to observe about this strange vehicle: Like the 'C' and the 'A' trains, why is the D train so ...seedy-looking? It looks as if it has been bathed in urine. Steeped in it. Brewed in it. Looks like an old wrinkled gym sock discovered behind an old sauna under an old urinal in an old gymnasium in an old building where they used to make daguerreotypes and sepia-toned wallpaper. 'Faded' doesn't begin to describe these vehicles. The interiors are dim, dingy, stained..like strips of yellow flypaper. Every single car! The light is feeble--unable to penetrate the gloom. All the safety features decrepit and outdated; all the signs weary and hoarse; all the seats scratched and abraded by the chafing of a million slouching rumps. The wales of the ribbed linoleum floors are worn smooth by the erosion of innumerable passing feet and periodic rinses by buckets of turbid grey ammonia-water. The 'fly-paper' metaphor (above) aptly fits because the wretches I see riding the 'D' resemble dead flies expired on such flypaper. The saddest, scruffiest, most end-of-their-rope, down-at-their-heels, bedraggled, listless, most dispirited and sorry-looking troupe of deadbeats and castaways ever, ride the 'D'. 'D' stands for 'dicked over'. It looks like a Red Cross train. They're all hunched over, or slumped in their seats; groggy & squinting; rubbing their necks; going through their pockets, or else staring vacantly out into space. Yep. For some reason the passengers on this train perfectly match the crusty, congealed, stale-cheese-doodle of their MTA chariot: D train. Belongs on the annual cover of 'Despair Illustrated'. I am not too fond of the D train. I have a habit of getting onto the D train at Columbus Circle at night when it goes express to 125th and I am trying to get to 81st. So I will get on the D train, wonder why we haven't stopped in a while...then realize it is an express train. Then I have to take the C train back to 81st. This is my own fault. However. UGHHHH.... Ive been living in Bensonhurst for 4 years now, and all 4 years, during all 4 seasons, and at all hours of the day/night there has been track service delaying my every move. I have watched these LAZY transit workers do nothing but eat and chit-chat...no actual work happens during this so called "track work"! When I can get on the train it is usually contains the following: - Tons of Chinese people of all shapes & sizes...usually sleeping - Mexicans either drunk or with 15 children taking up all the seats - Rowdy high school kids doing their best to annoy fellow passengers - Ghetto people screaming/beating their young - Panhandlers... sometimes singing - Bedbugs - Seats soiled with unknown substances - Vomit (usually on Friday or Saturday) This is by far the WORST train line ever! The MTA has some nerve raising fares for service that has just gotten worse. Its such a slap in the face to see these workers day by day, doing nothing, while getting paid top dollar just to socialize and get a tan... what an insult! I'm moving! Oh D Train, how do I love you? If you were a person, and I was still single, I would totally make out with you at a party. We are lucky enough to live near the 145th Street stop on the D. That means that we're about 20 minutes to midtown and 40 to Chinatown or the East Village. Hell, it takes an hour and three trains to get from the Upper West Side to the East Village by subway, so the D opens up the City to people living way uptown. The great thing about the D is that in Manhattan its always running express. It never quits. And then, only really late nights, it may run local in Brooklyn, which is fine because I have to get off at 36th and transfer anyway and its not too many stops. I think the reason for the delay between pacific and the bridge is the line always gets cut by some douchebag Q train or something. Its just a reliable train like that, and I agree with Dani, it connects well at certain points like 34th street and pacific with the yellow line, and the blue line at West 4th. read more

I used to take the D train a lot more when I live in Bensonhurst... and enough when I lived in Washington Heights. Pretty reliable. Older train cars, but I'm okay with that. I hoped on the D train the other day to get to work because, shockingly, the B train wasn't showing up. I usually try to avoid doing that because once I get to Atlantic, the B is allllll the way on the other side of Atlantic (because before Barclays it used to be the Atlantic Avenue stops and the Pacific street stops). When I'm going against traffic usually, the D isn't so crowed at all. But the days I take it to Yankee stadium, it's a yankee sardine can, not that the 4 is any better. I do like the express D trains home from the stadium. Home in under an hour! Not to mention, on [winning] game days, the chants and shenanigans from the yankee fans. read more

The D takes me from Park Slope to Midtown every day for work and back and usually I have no problems at all. Quick, fast and I can usually even get a spot to lean on the doors that don't open for my entire trip - that's when I know it's going to be a good day. I also know it's going to be a good day when I see a hot girl on it - in fact, my first week of living in Park Slope I saw a girl that probably should have been the mother of my children. Everyday for that week we road on the same train yet I never said anything.. I haven't seen her since. So if you're hot, say hello to me, please? The D is also well known for lulling me to sleep on late nights home -- the D train has also never let be mugged or have anything stolen. Although, I did get to see some guys buy coke on it once, that was cool. The D train also houses my favorite subway performer on the weekends around 2am - Although, I haven't seen him in ages. He's an old dude that wears all leather, plays guitar, sings and has his amp in his rolling suitcase. I haven't seen him in a long time, though. If he moved onto another line or whatever, the D is going to lose a star. read more

Despite being packed in like sardines, this was an efficient way to commute across the city for a tourist. The kiosks are pretty straight forward and while not the cleanest stations in the world, things worked out. Whoever is in charge and thought it's necessary to do track work and close 3 stations down for two consective weeks(Coney Island, Bay 50th, 25th Ave), forcing people to take a slow, unreliable, overcrowded shuttle bus to the next nearest station a mile away is a MORON. Look at your lazy, overpaid employees who do nothing but sit and watch one person do all the work all day. This should have been finished two years ago... I live so far out in Brooklyn, the places to review on Yelp near me would receive their first reviews! That being said, I love the D. It's the best line in NYC. Yes, by the time it gets me home, it's stopping every 7 blocks, but from 36th street to mid-town, it's wicked fast. The weekends can be tricky with construction, but I tell people to take the D to Coney Island more than any other train, it's express enough that it's still quick after hitting every other block by the time it's at the bottom of Brooklyn. Also, the D allows me to wave to Lady Liberty every morning going over the bridge. read more

The D train is a mediocre subway line that has the potential to be so much better. Back when I attended City College, I used to take it to 145 Street. That is a nasty station. And it seemed like for every D train, there were two A trains. One good thing about the D is that it is pretty fast (at least in Manhattan). It goes straight from 59 Street to 125 Street. The D train is also a popular route for Yankee fans heading to the House that Ruth Built. Sometimes, I study at the Bronx Library. With the exception of Yankee Stadium and Tremont Avenue, all of the Bronx stations, including Fordham Road, look like shit. Fordham Road smells like the back of a sanitation truck. In addition, some of the stations along the Grand Concourse have entrances and exits that look desolate and dim, so if you're traveling at night, you have to be careful. Once in a while, those jackass performers do their idiotic dance routines on the D train. The one good thing about the D is that it uses large subway cars so you have a good chance of getting a seat, except during rush hour. I should also point out that a lot of sexy latina chicks ride the D in the Bronx. Nevertheless, this not one of the better subway lines. read more

This is how it goes. The current D train used to be the B train that runs from Coney Island to 205th. Not that it really matters but I always wonder why they changed the once D train to a Diamond Q and then to the B and then moving the D train to another line altogether. Anybody follow me? The D is just like the B train until it gets to Brooklyn. One might be more "expressed" than the other but really no purpose in taking the D unless you need to get to Sunset Park and Bensonhurst area. What I'm trying to say is the D is like B train when it gets to Manhattan. There is construction all the time with these lines but it's not only the D line. It's MTA altogether. Oh D train you are my connection to the city. You make me happy when you run efficiently. But many times you do not. You get stuck between 36 Street and the Manhattan Bridge more times then I care to remember. Your cars are sleek and dirty but usually there is an empty seat for me during rush hour. You connect me to the F, B and N trains at Coney Island and 2, 3, 4, 5, N, Q, R, M (during rush-hour) and the LIRR at Pacific/Street Atlantic Avenue which makes my navigation around the city easy when the MTA is doing track work. Hopefully they will fix the problems on your line soon. You also offer the best of both worlds with an underground and scenic above ground track. read more
