Miranda's Cake House - Some of the best biscuits and gravy I've ever had along with the very unique Hocus Pocus latte

Also picture after picture of delightful pastries: scones, artistically decorated cupcakes, cinnamon rolls and amazing cakes. It looked so good that we made a drive to Wagoner, just to give Miranda's Cake Café a try. It turned out to be a miserable mess. The only thing good about this café is the coffee and the very nice lady that was working today. Possibly Miranda herself. I ordered a Mocha and my wife had a dry cappuccino. Both drinks good. Only get coffee here, nothing else. The pastry case was almost empty. A couple of muffins, Danish and cookies, that's all. Not much to choose from. My wife settled on the Danish which was fair. I ordered the double biscuits and gravy. It was disgusting. A room temperature, tasteless bowl of cat food was what I was served. Check the picture. I think most restaurants would be ashamed to set that mess in front of a customer and then charge them $8 for it. When checking out the nice lady asked me "how was the food?" I just smiled and said fine. My morning was ruined, no sense ruining hers too. This visit to Miranda's Cake Café was a failure. Extremely disappointed.

The single biscuit and gravy was one of the best I've ever had, and huge and insanely inexpensive to boot! Miranda was so lovely and friendly and she talked me into trying her own latte concoction - the Hocus Pocus. It was an admittedly strange combination of (if I remember correctly!) butterscotch, raspberry, and hazelnut but it was an absolute taste sensation. She makes all of her own syrups in house too, which is pretty amazing. The space is huge and has some cute jewelry, shirts, and other crafty items for sale. Definitely worth a stop off route 69!

No signs declare its existence. My wife and I found ourselves there for a meeting with her coworkers, one of whom has been a longtime frequenter of this establishment and recommended it as the site for the group's monthly dinner. She had made the reservation (required, for parties of at least 15) and had also been the one to choose our meal. I'm told the business can accommodate for many different allergies or diets and that they have a wide selection of meats, vegetables/sides, and desserts from which you can take your pick. The dining hall is in a nondescript white building across from the main house. It is far from fancy in keeping with the lifestyle of its proprietors. As in tin-metal walls, concrete floor, and gas-powered lights/heat. Metal folding chairs flank two long rows of folding tables covered in plastic tablecloths; our party of 12 sat in one row with a few seats to spare. The atmosphere is that of having a Sunday supper after church with kinfolk at grandma's. The (rather adorable) children of the (hardworking) women preparing and serving our food played along the borders of the room and ran through the doors, the air ringing with their laughter. Drinks (water or unsweetened tea only) were served as we arrived. Once everyone was present the food came out family-style - one large platter or bowl at a time, passed from one person to another. And now what you've all been waiting for: the food! The coleslaw wasn't very good; then again, I'm not a coleslaw fan and so might not be a good judge of it. The green beans could've come from a can for all the good they tasted. And the roast was dry, tasteless. That's where the negatives end. The baked chicken was tender/moist/juicy, all those words that make some people uncomfortable when talking period, let alone about food. The mashed potatoes were creamy, the white gravy perfectly rich, the country noodles expertly flavored, and the turkey dressing pure cheesy goodness. I can't forget the rolls, too, which when paired with homemade apple butter were the best I've ever had. After a brief rest to digest, we were served one kind of coffee and two kinds of pie - cherry and coconut cream. The cherry pie filling reminded me of a Pop-Tart but more intense, which wasn't a bad thing at all. Typically I don't like even the word coconut unless it's followed by "rum and pineapple juice", but that particular pie was delicious. It may have made me a convert. I haven't mentioned the service, but it was fantastic. Glasses never more than half-empty before being refilled. Constant questions of whether we needed anything else. Smiling faces and good conversation. We ate until we were stuffed and several people took home heaping to-go boxes, yet there was still a ton left of each food item. On the way out I picked up a loaf of banana but bread from the bakery side. The damage to my wallet for all of this? $27.59! Yep. All-you-can-eat comfort food for two in a place that feels like home for under $30. I'm definitely going back. Just as soon as I can round up 10-12 likeminded foodies so I can make a reservation.

The food selection felt like back when I was in elementary school but better since chicken and noodles was on the line when I visited. At a fish house, the same heartfelt enthusiasm fuels their suggestions, their pride illuminating every dish they serve. But why is it, when we reach out about their pies--those tender, comforting slices--their response is silence? No advice, no hints, no warmth--just a cold, dismissive "I don't eat pie. It's been six years since I had pie. It's just not something I eat." Those are the words from the very people who work here, strangers to the simple joy that a good pie can bring. No effort to tempt, no desire to share a slice of happiness or to welcome us back. It's as if they've given up entirely on creating an experience, on making us feel valued, on making us crave more. And even as signs invite us to indulge--"Try our butter, cheese, fudge"--we walk away empty-handed, denied even a sample to taste the passion behind their products. This place, with its dusty buggies parking spot out front, presents itself as an Amish-inspired haven, yet it feels hollow--more of a tourist trap than a genuine slice of heritage. It's a place that seems to have forgotten the soul of community, the warmth of tradition, and the simple act of sharing something truly special. And I can't help but wonder--why settle for empty gestures and sterile responses? Why not open your hearts, embrace the spirit of true hospitality, and let us taste the love you claim to carry? I'll look forward to March 14.
