Came here last week, a few days after Christmas. The bar was rammed at 7.30pm when we arrived but I can't say if that was normal or due to the festive period. The restaurant gradually filled up and the staff said they were fully booked that night. I had been to the Crown years ago and I wasn't keen to return. However the place has been refurbished not only to a high standard; but also sympathetically with the fact that this is an old building. The interior was unrecognisable from before, now being brightly lit with scrubbed wooden tables and chairs, with a good comfortable atmosphere. There are bookshelves lining the walls and I can imagine it would be a good place for a quiet drink in the afternoon. To the meal and service. Three of us had the garlic bread with cheese to start. Warning: huge portion of ciabatta loaded with melted cheese ( what's not to like?) and should be shared! Someone also had the South African Farmer's sausage which I tried and I found quite red meaty in taste rather than pork, but still good. Next I had the Bobotjie which is a South African mince dish. Not much to it and quite tasteless. Steaks that were ordered looked good and were certainly enjoyed by others. We shared some ice cream at the end which was pleasantly creamy and sweet. Wine and service were good throughout, although the latter a bit slow. Perhaps to be expected on such a busy night. Solid three stars: will be very happy to come back. read more
