As my fellow yelper Stu wrote, The Guest House in Southport is a lovely, traditional style pub that…read moreis somewhat hidden away from the busy (and tackier) drinking venues in the town centre. Unlike many pubs and bars in the area, The Guest House offers its customers a quiet and peaceful place to have a few decent pints without being drowned out by loud music or even louder drinkers. The selection of pints on offer there is very good, with a range of cask ales available on draught as well as a good selection of lagers, all available at inexpensive prices. The pub itself is reasonably-sized, meaning you always have ample room to relax and enjoy your drink without fear of anyone committing the cardinal sin of knocking over your pint. It can be quite a walk from the train station, but it is worth trekking to if you can manage to negotiate the confusingly similar looking streets around those parts.

Lovely "Pub-Style" pub!…read more No loud music, traditionally decorated and furnished. A decent choice of beers (including 'guest' cask ales). Small but pleasant area at the back for us anti-social smoking types with lots of plants (it's not big enough for a lawn!) Our favourite venue for a 'quiet couple of pints' when we're in town. The only draw-back is if we take a car; parking in Southport can be a bit problematical with the whole town centre 'pay and display' and not too many parking spaces at that. Better to go by bike, train or bus!

Ah..the Saddle. I grew up nearby and was told by my Dad that this pub was where Oliver Cromwell…read moretied up his horse and had a pint. I'm not sure about that but I guess it is "old". It has a blue plaque thing outside which I didn't read. It had been several years since I visited but the layout hasn't changed much. There is a small bar as you walk in and then two distinct rooms, one of which was packed and the other empty. The empty one was called "Lords" (not sure why) and seemed to be a dining room. I wasn't eating but went in there as I was only having a quick pint. So, to beer. They had a decent selection of real ales-maybe about five. A nice touch which I haven't seen in any other pub was that in front of each tap they had a small jar which contained the beer. I asked what it was for and was told it is so customers could see the colour of the beer-light, dark etc. A really nice touch. I had a pint of Thwaites Lancaster Blonde. A very good pint and well kept. The decor hasn't changed in the Saddle-old prints etc. In the Lords room was a wonderful old fireplace. The place undoubtedly has atomosphere. However, here is the one gripe I have. MUSIC. The core demographics here is not hipster and yet they had music blaring out. Please, please ditch the music! A pub like the Saddly where people of a certain age come in for convivial chat doesn't need a bellowing Celine Dion. If this pub was in London I suspect it would not have music. Anyway, aside from that-a characterful pub, good beers, nice staff and a nice atmosphere. Almost full marks for this neck of the Woiods.

The pub has a good food menu (cheap and cheerful - don't expect too much) and guest ales. Best bit about the pub is the beer garden, great in summer. Worst bits - not child friendly, locals can seem a bit territorial and off putting (sit in a regulars seat at your peril!)
