Despite being very busy, we were greeted warmly and with a smiles. The food was excellent, freshly made & cooked on the premises and at a very reasonable price. The beer is superbly kept and the overall atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. We will definately be going again, and have no hesitation in recommending this. The menu had something for everyone and was much better than other pub menus that we have had during the course of the week. Food was fabulous. Staff were sooo friendly and attentive without being condescending (I hate that!). The layout of the pub restaurant was lovely. If you wanted privacy you could have it but we were happy to have a sociable evening with other patrons and the staff. So glad we ignored the very old review. We have booked to return on Friday!

The experience was less than satisfactory from the very start. When greeted "a loose description" I asked if we could sit anywhere. The surly response from the female server was "Are you eating", to which I said yes please although we haven't booked. This was met with a look of contempt and faux scratching at a piece of paper and frowning to suggest they couldn't seat us, but then behold they could fit us in, I will add there was no one in the restaurant seated at this point and it still wasn't full an hour and 20 minutes later when we left. We sat and the drinks order was taken. Upon me taking jest from my friend, my wife apologised to the server and his response was "it's OK I have to deal with people like that all of the time". In hindsight this was not a polite comment meant in a lighthearted way as we were to discover. The drinks came and we ordered our food, A trio of meats sharing platter, the pork and a Beef Wellington, I will add no price was displayed on the specials board for the Beef, which I thought was a legal requirement? 30 minutes later the platter came out, we were going to wait for a few minutes but started as there was no sign of the other food. The only food on our plates remotely warm was the carrots, bearing I mind the platter plate had been preheated as had our plates. Having waited for 30 minutes already we started to eat it. We were the first people to be served Sunday lunch, so how it was cold I have no idea. The other food came out 5 to 10 minutes later, also cold. We mentioned this to Brandon and he offers to replace the vegetables, to which we collectively said no thank you as we had waited 30 to 40 minutes already. He later felt the need to correct us as to the time we had waited and it had only been 20. I appreciate this may be what the system says, but this would be dependant on it being ordered straight away, which it clearly hadn't. When the bill check we had a coffee and the 2 "hot" cold chocolates taken off the bill. I mentioned I didn't think this was acceptable as all of the food was cold, to which we were corrected and contradicted by Brandon again. Personally I am appalled at the distinct lack of customer service, no real apology and cold food served as first service in your restaurant. I would also add when we left it was still not full. I am sure you will receive contradictory versions of this from the staff in question, however I would then happily put you in touch with my wife and 2 friends for their input into this. A superb little coaching Inn with barrels of old world charm throughout. The bar and the restaurant offer a comprehensive selction of real ales and top notch pub food. The services is polite and friendly. But the biggest surprise was the room. I was expecting a single bed in a cramped corner but was offered a very tastefully decorated mini-suite with a very spacious and modern bathroom on the lower level and the huge double bedroom above in a renovated loft space. The only thing to let this place down is that at the time of writing, mobile phone & internet access is very poor and non-existant. If the hotel was to offer Wi-Fi to its mid-week working customers I think I could forgive the lack of mobile reception which is obviously beyond the hotel's control. Highly recommended as both comfortable and affordable with great food and drink. Ideal weekend getaway.

But then something happened which is an absolute no-go. I had a fishcake as main and when I have taken the first bite it was so unbelievable hot that I have burnt my tongue, it was so terrible. Even now, almost 24 hours later, it still hurts. I can't drink a coffee without pain. I guess that a very inexperienced person in the kitchen heated the cake too long in a microwave. It's the only explanation for this extrem temperature, I never experienced this before (and I hope will never again).  This is the reason why there should be a ban for microwaves in kitchens. An US American would have sued them for damages. Nevertheless I rate three stars because it is a lovely inn and I hope they read it and will change something that this will never happen again.

It is well known for working really hard to use locally sourced produce and this is the reason that we chose to go there. The menu is quite small which I like, giving an indication that nothing has been hanging around for ages. We all opted for the roast which on that day was lamb from just down the road. We were a little disappointed with the small amount of vegetables - it seemed more suitable for two rather than three adults - but everything was really tasty and perfectly cooked. We all chose a different dessert as they all sounded so gorgeous we wanted to try them all - we were not disappointed, they were all amazing. Now having eaten our yummy puddings we were pleased that our dinner was not a mountain of food because we would not have been able to manage dessert! They also sell a range of homemade cakes, jams and chutneys (my mother-in-law got a large bakewell tart to take home with her) and the lady across the road came in whilst we were there to sell eggs from her chickens to the landlady. First, there was a mix-up with the payment before the meal was even served. We had been asked to pay in advance for my meal, which seemed very odd but we agreed to. (Apparently, it's because it's a pub & that's what pubs do!) However, after all waiting at the till the staff didn't seem to know how to take the payment from each individual. So we all sat down again. It took 40 minutes for the starters to begin coming out from the kitchen. Just as this happened we were told to go & pay again, so there was a server trying to bring us food as we were getting up trying to move around to get to the till to pay. The delivery of the first course took far too long; some people had finished their starters  before others had even received theirs. I had the prawn avocado cocktail, & it was unpalatable. The prawns were clearly previously frozen; they were tasteless and hard. The cocktail sauce had no flavour. Others had breaded brie which were dry & as hard as pebbles! It then took another 45 minutes for our main courses to arrive. There was no communication from the staff about the delay. When the food finally arrived, I was appalled by its quality. Not only was it lukewarm, but the dishes were also completely inedible. I had ordered the grilled salmon. When it arrived the hollandaise sauce in the small jug looked like it had been standing for a considerable amount of time. There was a congealed skin on the top of the sauce. Stirring it just made it lumpy. The salmon itself was dry and lukewarm. It, too, looked like it had been sitting out a long time. The potatoes that were meant to be 'roast' had clearly been deep-fried and tasted like chips. Most had very little potato in the fried shell. The parsnips had also been deep-fried. They tasted like the potatoes. They were burned and soggy and dripping in grease. There was meant to be stuffing and a Yorkshire pudding with the meal. These were missing, but by the state of the stuffing (hockey pucks) and Yorkshires (tough) others had, I think that was a lucky miss. The Christmas dinner was just as disappointing More than half the party couldn't eat their meals. It was clear that the meals did not meet even the basic standards expected from any reputable establishment. We couldn't believe that such poor-quality food was served. As there were numerous complaints about the food from several members of our party, we were offered a complimentary tea or coffee. A nice gesture but hardly enough to compensate for an inedible meal. We were offered replacement meals but having waited over an hour for the first meal, we declined, especially when we were told (by the staff) that the food was sent in from Greene King and just reheated on the premises. Thankfully I had ordered cheese & biscuits for dessert. Impossible to mess up. But those that ordered Christmas pudding were serves with a slice of (clearly microwaved) hard pudding that was impossible to cut with a spoon. They were given replacement desserts but not what they wanted because they had to be defrosted. I tried to address my concerns with the management, but was told to take it up with Greene King head office. But my contract was with the franchisee. I asked to speak to the owner on more than one occasion and was told that this is not the pub's problem & was again told to email the head office. Despite multiple attempts to speak with one of the owners, I was met with a dismissive attitude from the staff. Apparently hosting a pub quiz was more important to them than dealing with unhappy customers. This lack of engagement and accountability is simply unacceptable. As a paying customer, I expect to be treated with respect, receive prompt and efficient service & be offered edible food. Despite numerous emails and requests for a refund, I have been told no refund as we were offered replacement meals that were turned down. Avoid at all cost.
