Recently moved from down the road into the old Lloyd's bank, I'm glad the village hasn't been left with a dead unit, and expanded to a ajoining bridal shop. Eugenie and Elisa are friendly and experienced with a lot to offer. Alterations work on a week turnover (there's always quite a queue), but they have been known to do shorter jobs when people ring up panicking. They do anything from turning up your trousers to fixing up your wedding dress, by hand and machine. They have a little changing room in the back of the shop, so you can try on to do a fitting- and they'll always be honest about fittings and costings. (just please take your stuff in clean!) If you can't find what your after squirrelled in the many nooks and crannies of the shop- just ask, as there's zips, cotton tapes, elastics, behind the till, and less popular odds and ends like rucksack clips upstairs.

KBT is a family run business that sell a lot of stock internationally, and because of the safe, high quality of their fabrics schools and education establishments buy a lot of stuff from them. If you live locally and work for a school or third sector organisation they do scrap bags of off cuts super cheap, which is always great for art projects. The guys here are really helpful at finding the fabric you are after or making suggestions with regards to price and alternatives. You can always take a swatch away with you which has all the pricing of the fabric you were looking at. They stock a wide range of spray and fabric paints as well as velcro and cutters. If you plan on visiting you can't access KBT directly off the round-a-bout it faces but via Nechells Place.

A number of their regular clients are from education - schools and nurseries - who come to get fabrics suitable for kids to work with, or who need cheap fabric to create backdrops and costumes for school productions. Because of this, they sometimes sell special binbags full of offcuts for very little money which could be full of loveliness, or could be full of boring beige (one bag I bought had some lime green pleather in it - fab!) Alongside the practical fabrics they have a fair amount of upholstery fabric, and also a big range of fabric paints, spray paints and other textile-related products in cans and jars and pots. On a recent trip i was lucky enough to come away 3 seperate lots of material (enough to make a dress, a coat and 3 bags) as well as all my cotton and ribbons for less than twelve pounds which i did think was amazing! they also have a wonderful wool section, and a good collection of dress patterns, and as well as bag fasteners and buttons, zips etc. The clearance section is brilliant because even the seconds fabric is of excellent quality so you can save a load of money whilst getting some excellent fabric

The selection of fabrics is impressive & wide ranging, also competively priced, but I find that a lot of them feel quite old fashioned & lack contemporary style, although I can spend quite a lot of time browsing, there's rarely anything that I wish to buy. Likewise, with a lot of the table coverings, upholstry fabrics & curtains, while the quality is not in question, the colours & pattern styles appear twenty years out of date & fail to compete with the selections seen in department stores. The haberdashery is well stocked with range of sewing & craft tools & supplies, it carries mainly brand name goods, which is to its favour, but while reasonably priced in comparision to other highstreet stores they fail to match online prices.
