Independents being brought together as a collective unit, if not quite under one roof, is the appeal here. It's not really a one-stop shop, a sort of town within a town, but it is a legitimate destination unto itself, with the range still being quite broad, despite the niche appeal of some of the individual enterprises.
For instance, you could book a holiday and then get your hair cut, which is fine, as long as those are the things you need to do. But you can't imagine any shortfall in shopping or tasks to be met through candles, bespoke framing, horse feed and posh chocs. Browsing and for-its-own-sake hanging out is, then, ultimately the appeal beyond anything practical. But that's not to say high-end, extremely well-presented enterprises are without appeal. To a certain set, it's very attractive.
