I never forget to stop into The Cookie Shoppe when I'm in Downtown Albany. I love the Reuben and the Deluxe BLT sandwiches, which are served with a bag of chips. I wanted so hard to like this place because it's so well-known out here and it's such a staple. But it didn't hit the way I thought it was going to. The cookies tasted stale, maybe because I've definitely tried way better homemade cookies but they just weren't it. And I asked for my sandwich to be toasted and it tasted like they just popped it in the microwave. Definitely overpriced for the taste. The staff is super sweet though and you could tell that they love the community. I'm just so bummed that the food wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. This is one of the best places in Georgia to have lunch!!! It's a tiny family owned restaurant with the best sandwiches and cookies, wait did I forget lemonade!!! Let's just say you have to get there in a timely manner because the subs will SELL OUT!!! The restaurant closes at 3p.m and everyone that knows about this diamond in the ruff is there trying to get there grub on. I recommend the turkey and bacon sub. You have to make sure that it is a SUB to get the full effect. They make their own bread and it is excellent. I've also had the breakfast and its good as well. I will say the customer service by the owners is a little 'iffy'. At first I thought they were rude but they're older and just have their own ways. Oh yea... the cute guy is their son (insert drooling)!!! Once you become a regular (and you will) its all good. Cheap and Cheerful at its best! I arrived to this establishment due to the reviews. The experience was fantastic from beginning to end. The ordering system is friendly--and so is the staff. The checking-out process was efficient. The wait time between ordering and receiving was really short. When traveling on the highway, it is really nice to stop and get a local feel--this place definitely has it. I ordered the Pimento Cheese Sandwich with bacon and a cup of Chili (as per the recommendation of a local waiting in line). The sandwich was really good and the chili was superb. It came served with a small bag of Lay's potato chips. My company enjoyed the food and the place as much as I did. Two in my party got Cinnamon Raising Bread Pudding for their dessert--both raved about it. I bought a Cinnamon cookie for the road and can't wait to try it. The restaurant is a real gem. It's situated downtown and there are a couple of tables outside, so on a nice day it might be a great thing to sit outside with a sandwich and watch downtown. The food has been great both times I have tried them. The fact they are locally owned and dish out great food earns them five stars in my book easily. The downtown charm adds to it. The small shop that reminds me of my favorite place in college adds nostalgia. There are some complaints, but I'll get to those last. First, the BLT is amazing. I've tried two versions and both were just outstanding. I had BLT on rye this last time and the bread really had a strong flavor to it, but it was still great. The bacon was strong, the tomatoes were juicy, and the flavors just matched up really well. I tried a bite of my wife's Philly and it was great also. The bread was chewy and delicious, the food was cooked to order, and it was split between two rolls. She was raving about it also. Finally, I tried one of the soups they were advertising: vegetable beef. It was kind of pricey for what you get, but it was decent. To be completely honest, it reminded me of the vegetable beef I ate at Shoney's as a child. There was a Shoney's over near the bowling alley and I used to eat it all the time. It's not the most amazing soup in the world, but it was still decent. Now, please forgive my griping, but there are a few to be had. 1. The operating hours. Monday - Friday, 7 am to 3 pm. That translates into you will never really experience this on the weekend (and anyone coming from out of town to Albany -- haha -- will also not experience this place). They do events on weekends from time to time, but you can't count on that. You can't come here for dinner either. That's disappointing. I wouldn't mind coming here for dinner. 2. The line to order and pay is ridiculous. It's slow. It's not organized. The whole store is just one big level of chaos it seems. It could be planned so much better and spaced better. I finally got my order in, then had to wait behind a lady who ordered and paid, then finally got to pay. 3. The drinks need to come out from behind the counter. The waiting to get a drink is not a good thing. You have to get back in the line to order, so there is confusion on top of not getting your drinks in a timely manner. 4. The cookies are not that good and they force them on you. I ordered and the lady was like you have to get a cookie. I was like, "Fine, chocolate chip please." I wasn't sure if I was paying for it or not, but considering this small meal was nearly 25 bucks... Anyway, the cookie was nothing spectacular and kind of takes away from the real charm of the place. Maybe they should consider calling themselves something else. I don't want to end on a bad note for such a great little restaurant (seriously, I do like them). They have crushed ice. It's good. I'm still eating it as I type this. Give them a shot if you can catch them while they're open! read more

When I was a child, my mother would occasionally take my older brother and me here for a cookie after spending an afternoon reading in the public library that is right next door. I hadn't been here in almost 20 years...and I had never tried their food, until today. I met a friend for lunch at the Cookie Shoppe around 12:45pm on a Wednesday. The inside of the restaurant is decorated with old Georgia newspaper clippings and photographs, some from Albany. They had a good crowd of customers and were quickly and promptly taking orders and making change. The employees were so kind and gave me suggestions since it was my first time dining there. I went with the chicken salad sandwich on wheat. It came with Lays original potato chips and pickles. I added a Diet Pepsi and a home-baked chocolate chip cookie to my order. It seemed as if my friend and I had just sat down after ordering that our food was promptly at our table. At first glance, the chicken salad sandwich looked delish. They gave me a huge portion and I asked for lettuce and tomato on the sandwich. They had little pickle slices on the side. I put those on the sandwich. Boy was it good!!! I am fairly new to eating chicken salad so I don't have many others to compare it to, but WOW was it delicious. It was such a large portion and the chick salad itself was sooo creamy. The lettuce, tomato, and pickle added such good flavor to the sandwich. I can't believe I have lived in Albany my entire life and had never eaten here for lunch. It was so nice to see a local establishment hustling and bustling at lunch. Great service. Great food. Nice atmosphere. I will definitely be coming here again when I am in town next. read more

My sister put me on to this place about a month ago and I have been back at least three times since then. That's very rare for me as I normally don't go back to the same place that frequently. This place simply have the best sandwiches in downtown Albany. Hell, all of Albany for that matter. I love their subs. My personal favorite: the turkey and ham sub. The bread is freshly made each morning and it is very soft. Their cookies are good too, but the sandwiches here are outstanding. They have limited hours and are closed on weekends. This place is, IMO, the best restaurant in Albany. Do yourself a favor, get bacon on whatever you order-- I love their pimento cheese, bacon and tomato on wheat or rye. They have a large menu for the size of their shoppe, but everything is quality and delicious! My husband got the corn beef and we agree it's the best we have had, and we have lived all over the east coast. Make sure to save room for their homemade baklava-- again, best we have ever had. Oh, and their sweet tea is on the money! Make sure whatever you get, make it a meal, so you can have their sweet tea/soda/lemonade, bag of chips and a COOKIE!! I've been going to the Cookie Shoppe since I moved to Albany years ago. My favorites are the turkey sandwich and the club, but everything on the menu is fantastic. The service is top-notch. The soups are also very good. But the one thing you better not miss is the baklava. Oh my goodness! Delicious. And if you leave without a cookie you're missing out. The atmosphere is great - it gets crowded at lunch but everyone is always cheerful (patrons and workers alike!) and my daughter (17) loves to look at the pictures on the walls of Albany in the '30s and the newspaper articles and ads from "long ago". I was visiting my in-laws in Albany and told them that I had to stop by the Cookie Shoppe to have lunch here. My mother in law agreed because she actually comes to eat lunch here pretty often. We got there right before the rush so we were lucky. I ordered the homemade hummus with pita and veggies, which was very light and delicious, something I needed after weeks of eating very hearty Southern food. My husband just had a ham sub sandwich, my son had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, my mother in law and grandma in law both had the pastrami rueben which they both enjoyed. We all got a cookie with our sandwich but mines disappeared before I could taste it. hahaha! When we come back to visit, we will be back! read more
