What would a trip to blighty be without a Fish and Chip stop? Muther Brit recommended we stop here to appease The Brit's desire for a good old traditional fish n' chips. She never told us the name, so when we arrived we were enamoured with the creative genius that is "The Codfather." The shop is lovely, clean and nicely decorated. There are pictures from the movie all over the shop, as well as neat old shots of the own from way back when. I would say that if you're going to dine in, be prepared for some bad music as you dine. Luther Vandross and Celine Dion bad. The Codfather is a huge step above your typical greasy, standing room only fish fry shop, and equally steps above your run of the mill pub fish and chips. Now, I'm not connoisseur of fish and chips, and don't really like fish either, but The Brit's were happy with it and I could tell this was a nice place. Our servers were polite, smiling, lovely women ready to serve us and apologetic when they had to tell me they were out of the Butternut and Goat's cheese Pie I so deeply wanted. Yes, they do pies for those of you not fish wanting folks like me. However, I opted for the fish in an effort to honor my mother's only likable fish dish and to try something new. I ordered the medium cod fish with chips and garden peas. I fully claim that as an American who doesn't like fish, you should probably not trust my judgement on this meal. I found it dull and boring. However, the fish was not very greasy, and was light and flaky. The chips well crisped and the peas were, well, they were peas. Done to perfection I'd say. The Brit and Muther Brit were surprised at how dull I found it, but ever so happy with theirs. Muther Brit cleaned her plate faster than you can say "Fish and Chips" and said she only does so when she "really, really like something." The Brit also ordered a battered sausage, of which I tried and again and didn't like, but he enjoyed very much. Personally, it's the type of sausage that is used in battered sausage that I don't like. So, don't listen to the fact that I didn't like some of it and do your self a favor and eat at The Codfather. read more

The fish is dry and I asked for salt but I didn't get none. The chips taste like cardboard but at least the chip sticks are free. Manager was dressed like a roadman and told me he was going to "chef me up". As long as he isn't manager I'm gonna come back read more

Ordered the fish sandwich, I tried eating most of it but felt sick after because they put sooo much mayo in the sandwich. Felt like I was eating a can of lard. No flavor in the mayo either so on top of the oil and fish batter, the tub of mayo they slapped on the sandwich just makes you feel nauseated afterwards. I couldn't eat the rest of the bread because of mayo put on it, the sandwich was falling apart. Heavy, greasy, and nasty. read more

Visited Cambridge from USA and had their delicious fish and chips. Service was quick and ambience straight forward.

Great food, tastes fantastic. Only down fall is they add a lot of mayonnaise so if you only like a small amount I wouldn't recommend getting the mayo, however everything else is delicious and the waiters are lovely and easy to talk to. read more

Took itback to site working on fit out over the road so handy shop for me to day . just felt like fish & peas & this hit the spot. These are top class fish and chips I have rarely tasted fresher fish and the chips are truly delicious

Having driven past The Codfather in Sudbury many times since it opened, I finally succumbed to temptation last week. Firstly, immediate points for being open not only on a Sunday (unusual for fish & chip shops in these parts), but on New Year's Day. This was just what we needed after a busy Christmas period eating lots of rich food and red meat. On entering the premises it became apparent this was an establishment which cares about its appearance, and certainly not your usual fish and chip shop. The counter and frying range is spotless, and everywhere is clean and tidy. The menu was interesting, with a number of departures from a usual chippy menu - e.g. grilled sea bass, and home made pies including steak and stilton. However, for my first visit, I decided to stick to the product which gave the shop its name - good old cod and chips. I ordered a large portion for myself and small for the Mrs. After a short wait, my order was packed up in neat and attractive cardboard boxes, a really nice touch which certainly helps transporting them home in good condition. I was a bit annoyed that I wasn't asked if I wanted salt and vinegar, as previous customers had been asked. The fish itself was divine, perfectly fried flaky cod in a light and crispy batter. I don't remember eating better fish from anywhere within 30 miles. The portion was generous and the chips were also nicely cooked. However, my only gripe was the taste of the chips. They seem to cook them in a different oil to most other chippies. Difficult to describe, but the overall taste of the chips was just a little... oily. Not greasy, and not inedible, just not right. Or perhaps not what I expected. For this reason only, I have marked down The Codfather to 4 stars. However, I shall definitely return, and I look forward to trying out their restaurant which is fully licensed and offers a 3 course menu. read more
