Yep, she was right. I ordered a regular cod and chips meal for about £6. The cod was HUGE, the batter nice and crisp, plus there were bits as well! The chips were also lovely, covered in salt and vinegar. It was served in a box as well, which was a novelty to me. I couldn't resist but to start eating my chips as we were walking along the quay, and I reckon the smell of the sea air just adds to the saltiness of the chips, making them even better. The cod was really well cooked, with the crispness of the batter complementing the "melt in your mouth"-ness from the fish. So next time you're in Poole, check out Harlees. I know I'll be back!

As we sat outside by the harbour we came to realisation that the chips were probably the most delicious we had ever tasted... at least when we visited on that occasion. We went back yesterday evening as my partners mother was in town and we opted to eat in using the restaurant. We had given glowing recommendations of this place to her mother as well as many friends and colleagues but we were absolutely and completely disappointed when we were served our food. The food was very bland, boring and nowhere even close to the same quality it was just a couple of months ago. The chips lacked their distinctive crispy coating texture and flavour. I spoke to the waitress and manager on several occasions because it was like we had come to a totally different restaurant. I asked the manager, 'what's happened to the place?', 'are the diners served the same food as those who get takeaway?' and 'are you using a different chef or kitchen because the food has gone seriously down hill?' Unfortunately, the only feedback I got as to why the food may not have been so much to my liking was because a different type of potato might have been used due to seasonal harvests. Well I'm sorry, and I'm no potato specialist but I doubt that the type of potato chosen would affect a decrease in quality to the level we experienced. The blame can only fall to one reason in my opinion; poor cooking skills and ability. It seems to me that something negative has affected what's being put out from the kitchen. Also, the portion size seemed relatively small for the priced you paid at £3 for about 12 chips. Lastly, my partners mother ordered desert (I didn't as I didn't think my terrible main deserved a desert order). She ordered the apple crumble only to be told by the manager that he would not be happy to sell it to us (so basically it had gone off). She did order another desert which she was reasonably happy with but overall I would not recommend this place to anyone. I think we will be going to Chez Fred's in the future!

The staff closed the toilets and left it as disabled only where you have to ask for the key. Considering we had three children, one who is autistic and has an issue with toilets, having to ask for the key every time was ridiculous. I know also that it was only because it meant they did not have to clean them later. This also then took away the reason for having a separate toilet for disabled only. If you were in a wheelchair you would have to wait for all the families to finish!! Considering the fact there were many staff doing very little it seemed the height of laziness to us as a family. We also were told that we could not have toast for one of the children, even though we asked specially as he had it his mind he was having toast and he could have marmite. The way he works he saw marmite expected toast but could not have any.... To him he did not understand. Not exactly helping in the family friendly department!!! What family restaurant can't do toast! Plus I was told by a man whilst on his way passed me. Not even "I'm sorry we are not able " or anything just "No we don't, no toast!" Then one of the children wanted a yoghurt. A tiny fromage frais you can buy anywhere, £1.25, outrageous cost, that is where it is seriously silly. Cakes and coffees you can just about understand silly prices, but that took the biscuit. Then the cheek, total disregard for the customers and seriously disrespectful attitude was apparent when the staff started putting chairs up on tables around people still drinking and eating. We felt such a need to rush out (even though they did not close their doors to customers for another 38 minutes). Service, treatment and facilities not acceptable in our mind. I won't visit again in any hurry unless its under new management. The staff need some customer service training, and also general work training. You don't just all stand in a line by the till talking when people enter. You don't try to then appear to be totally disinterested in your customers. A little smile and helpfulness goes along way. Especially when your only customers at that point are families. £60 plus was spent on just a couple of sandwiches, drinks, cakes and children's fish fingers. Ashamed is what they should be, You never know who you're serving... Golden rule of customer service...Always treat every customer as an important one no matter who they are and even if you deem them as not!!

Now one thing I will say is I have seen queues going onto the pavement before for this place so try to get an early tea if you can as after 6pm things can get busy. If you can order over the phone and then you can be one of those smug folks who walks right to the front to collect your food! Our food was served in boxes rather than just bags which makes for much easier eating if your sitting in the car or outside. I enjoyed my cod and chips, nice chunky chips and a decent portion of cod too. Harlees are based at the bottom of a hill by some traffic lights just on the outskirts of town. They are always pleased to see their customers, and we are always greeted with a smile. The prices of the food are reasonable and average compared to other chip shops in the area, so you know you are getting value for money here. I always find the portion sizes to be huge and I can never finish a standard portion of cod and chips. The menu is standard to most chip shops, you wont find anything out of the ordinary on the menu, but there is a good selection as well. It's my chip shop of choice.
