This was my fifth visit to one of my favourite restaurants. I deliberately travel out of my way to…read moreeat here. The restaurant has a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and serves up an American-style BBQ menu. Portion sizes are big and the quality of the meat is never in doubt. On this visit I discovered their chicken wings, which have to be the best chicken wings I've had in the UK, and I'm struggling to remember any wings sampled in the U.S. that would beat them! The secret is definitely in the coating - I'm just gutted I didn't discover them sooner! Their southern fried chicken burger is my favourite burger from here, however unfortunately on this occasion they served it with blue cheese on top rather than the regular cheese I asked for. No problem though, they were more than happy to make a fresh burger which was just as delicious as always. The Surf, Bird & Turf Combo and BBQ Ribs are also great choices. My biggest plus about this place though is their fries; the best fries I've ever eaten. Consistently awesome on every visit, beautifully crispy and well-seasoned. Big 5 stars from me as I've had 5 fantastic meals here, and they have Brahma on tap which is a bonus.

BBQ is trending in the UK at the moment. And I'm not talking the sort where you burn meat (and…read morestill manage to undercook it on the inside) in your back garden, I'm talking 12 hour... slow roasted... pulled pork... Y'know - the kind where you have buzzwords trending on twitter and drooltastic photos appearing on here. It's THAT sort of BBQ that you can get at Grillstock. I was recommended Grillstock by our local BBQ expert, Ahmed Kage (if you haven't come across Rib Nights and you're a fan of meat, you HAVE to check it out). He had bigged up the restaurant as one of the best places to get BBQ in the UK - so we knew we had to make a date to go and see for ourselves. It was just lucky that we ended up passing through Brizzle on our way to Cornwall for our Honeymoon! We had read on the website that you can't book - but it was open from 11:30am in the week. We rocked up and arrived almost bang on opening time to grab some early lunch on our travels. We were greeted warmly and seated straight away. As it was early on a Monday, we didn't have any problems getting a seat... But I imagine on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday evening - it would be wise to get there near opening to avoid a lengthy wait for a table. After a quick look at the menu we quickly decided to go for the sharing platter. For £30 it had nearly every meat on the menu on it and looked like the right choice to try everything. I can confirm it certainly WAS the right choice! With everything from a full rack of ribs to chicken wings and pulled pork and beans, it was huge! You could sensibly feed three with the amount of meat, 'slaw and fries on offer, but we did manage most of it (with only half of ribs taken away in their awesome packaging for later devouring). All of the meat was totally fantastic. Tender, deliciously seasoned and cooked to perfection - it was some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Our meal (with a couple of fizzy drinks) came to under £40 with some food to takeaway. We didn't eat for nearly 24 hours afterwards either. If perfectly cooked meat at a reasonable price floats your boat - I recommend a trip to Grillstock!

I finally managed to get in there a few weeks back and was greeted by 4 people standing up and leaving, which meant we could sit straight down. The waitress gave us the basic but mouth watering menus and I decided on the Smokestack Burger. I really wanted to try the Grand Champion challenge, but I knew I wasn't man enough. The restaurant is made up of one table in the middle and a bar at the end, with open kitchen behind. Drinks wise they serve Orchard Pig cider, obviously, as it's the same guy owns Orchard Pig and Grillstock (what a legend) and a few other soft drinks. The food comes out on metal trays with nice branded paper underneath. The burger was delicious. Not the best in Bristol, but a very decent burger all the same. Our friends had the hot dogs and the brisket; the sauce around their mouths and instant silence said it all! All in all a decent place, Grillstock. There is A LOT of competition in Bristol for BBQ, Grill, Pulled Pork style dining - but these guys are the originators!

So thank Yahweh for Mettrick's, a Coffee house for the 21st century. While this review focuses on the high street House, it could just as well apply to any of the four Mettrick's franchises scattered around our fair city. These local kings, nay, TITANS of the Coffeesphere are dedicated to bringing us that premium black juice, and doing so in an environment that could be best described as "hella chill". Naturally, the coffee is top notch. My personal favourite is the filter coffee, which has been known to temporarily evoke the fantasy of being in a roadside American diner in the 1950s, with my glamorous Beatnik girlfriend, Susan. If you are the kind of person that enjoys eating and digesting food, they have that too and it's not bad. Frankly though, the Joe is this cafe's main focus and what they do best. Combined with the cosy atmosphere, warm temperature and friendly staff, this young chain has all the right ingredients to compete with the big boys. As a local and independent business, it is one we should tirelessly support, rather than forking our hard-earned cash over to other less than favourable big name high street purveyors of mediocrity and tax avoidance that stick to the streets of Southampton like an old crusty scab. Let's just hope as the chain expands it does so sustainably in a fashion that stays true to its original vision. Peace out.

The response from the female was: Your ordered through a third party (Menulog) so the order being incorrect is theor problem, which it isn't. She then said we can't do anything about it, so I can't help you, then told me to order the entire meal again and request a refund from Menulog. This business has made an error once before when they gave is an egg and bacon burger despite paying for a works hamburger. basically, absolutely pathetic customer service and we will not be using this business again. we should have went to their competitors over the road as others told us to do, that will be our to do in future. It's pretty standard takeaway, with an emphasis on fried chicken. I got a chicken burger when I came, and it was neither good nor bad - just pretty average. The chicken was a little bit greasy, and the chicken wings that my friend got didn't look very appetizing. It was pretty cheap though (maybe that's part of the problem), so all in all I wouldn't suggest making a special trip to Old Market for this cuisine.

But there's something a wee bit distressing about a chain taking over such a grand building and doing nothing but impose their mass produced stamp on something that was formerly a lot more beautiful. Originally crafted by artisans and latterly refurbished by shop fitters, I can't help feeling it's a sorry state of affairs. To make matters worse, Lakota are going to use it as a venue where people can come to watch the World Cup, eat breakfast for a couple of quid, or have lunch for two for a fiver, and then of course, there's the pizza deals... All very commendable under other circumstances, but just not here! Cheap cocktails on Wednesday, and other drinks promotions on other nights, provide for a cheap night out if you want to eat a meal served with chips and then get smashed. Personally, I think it's a crime!

Though the prices are good, I don't think it's somewhere I'll be spending a lot of time, unless I'm running low on cash and don't want to cook. It seems a little too impersonal to me, and I'll take a traditional pub any day of the week, which at least almost always make the attempt to impose a certain character into the place. The food, in fairness is extremely reasonably priced. You've got a 2 meals for £5 menu every day, a pizza and a drink for £5 and all sorts of offers throughout the week. These low, low prices extend to the drinks too. Naturally, I went in on a Wednesday because all cocktails are just £2.99. For the centre of Cardiff, that's pretty awesome. I ordered a Muddy Welly, ably mixed and delivered by JP the barman and it was fantastic. I can't remember what was in it exactly, but I'm thinking some kind of Baileys/Vodka concoction. Really friendly staff too and everyone seemed happy to chat. After a while, I did warm to the place a little and to be honest, for £2.99 a pop I had to pry myself away from the bar to avoid losing a whole day to sampling the entire cocktail menu.
