Completely disappointed with the "customer service" we received from the Clock Doctor. We have a redwood burl that is completely missing the clock and hands that it once had. We took it to the Clock Doctor after having it refinished, and even provided a picture of how we would like it to look when completed. We asked for nothing out of the ordinary. The first red flag was when we received a picture (via text message) and the burl was upside down. We had provided clear instructions on which side was supposed to be up. Had it been finished, it would have looked completely ridiculous. The next red flag (and deal breaker) was when we received a very surly text message asking for further direction on how the finished product should look. The text message said: "....honestly I can't spend a lot of time deciding for you it's just not worth my time so look things up and decide...." This was after pictures were provided and clear instruction was given. We were very surprised to hear that our business was not worth his time. We asked that our wood be returned to us, and that we had changed our mind. Deposit lost - but it was worth learning who not to take our clock repair business to in the future. read more

It is getting harder and harder to find someone to work on a nice clock. I had a problem with a mantel clock and found The Clock Doctor on the web after learning that my old clock maker had retired. If you need a clock worked on, this is the place to take it. By the way, he works out of Modesto most of the week. The biggest rip-off artist in the whole of Northern California! He will charge you a fortune, just to look at the clock and give you an estimate -- even if you decide not to hire him!! Charges you to take the clock off the wall, look at it, tell you the repair cost (in the high hundreds and even in the thousands!) and put it back up! I would highly consider another place before you come here. I took in two clocks to get fixed. He was unable to fix either clock. One was very old (my grandfathers) and it is understandable that he could not fix it. The other was a wall clock I received from my mother. He wasn't able to fix it either. The worst part about it is that he "disposed" of one of my clocks because I was Past the 30'day deadline. He called to tell me he couldn't fix it and did not receive another call. As I was speaking to the lady who works the front desk, "the clock doctor" popped around the corner to raise his voice as to why he got rid of it. I even asked him why he doesn't make a phone call to the customer and he stated that he called To tell me he couldn't fix it and he isn't going to waste his time (his exact words) to call again. I could not believe a person that works for the public would speak to a customer like that!!!! One of the most terrible service experiences that I have ever had. I contacted the Clock Doctor with a service request and in hopes that I would find a professional on the other end of the line. Instead I was met with someone who was rude and did not seem to want to be bothered. When he asked a series of questions that I could not answer, I explained that I did not know the answer. He got very rude and irritated and eventually hung up the phone. I see in other Yelp reviews that customers have had problems with customer service. Very unprofessional. Gary is a professional businessman, who has the highest of integrity. Instead of charging us to come to my house to fix the problem or sell me something that wasn't needed with my grandfather clock, he instead asked me a series of questions over the phone and had me address the problem myself. This guy does not know how to repair clocks so his 3 year warranty is worthless!!! Have had to return my clock several times and was never repaired properly, even though I paid him several hundred dollars for a complete rebuild my clock has never worked properly and still does not work!!! If you need your antique European clock repaired, don't take it here. He quoted me $1300 for repair of my British Railway Clock and my 1910 German Mantle Clock. I took them back to an old family clock repair business in Petaluma where I used to live. I was told they didn't need expensive cleaning, that they could repair damaged casing on the mantle clock for around $100, and get the railway clock working also for around $100. Cleaning and repair for $1300? and $120 hour? And I was told there was no such thing as a British Railway Clock. read more

Gary may be a skilled clock/watch repair specialist (never got to find out) but he is abrupt, rude and indifferent to his customers. He is also higher priced than others providing the same service...but as he told me "I don't care what anyone else charges". Despite a rough first call I scheduled him to come out and clean/assemble a grandfather clock that had been relocated in a move. On arrival I asked if had a mask as a COVID-19 precaution (was not wearing one). He said he did not, didn't have to, and didn't care what I or anyone else thought about it. He further added that he had all the business he could handle so he wasn't about to change is attitude or his lack of masking, turned around and walked away. This was one of the most unpleasant interactions I have had from a service provider of any kind in many years. I don't know how he stays in business. Incredible! Received cuckoo clock for Christmas. One of the chains was stuck (grandchildren?). Called and explained my problem. I hate to give 5 stars because very few outfits are perfect but the Clock Doctor fits that category. I had taken my Ship's Bell clock to him for cleaning a couple times but then moved to Vacaville so I took it to a local shop. I got ripped off at the Vacaville clock place as they had it for 8 months and when I got it back it wasn't fix. Still ran fast and bells didn't ring. They took it back and after 3 weeks they said it was fixed and when I got it home I realized it still wasn't fixed, same problem. I called the Clock Doctor and he said he would take a look at it. When I told him that some one else had cleaned it and replaced some bearings he said NOTHING had been done to my clock. He repaired it, had to replace the main unit, and I got my working Ship's clock back in about 3 weeks. Next time I will know better and drive 45 miles to take my clocks to him as I know it will be done quickly and done right. He fixed my clock the first time and guaranteed his work. I highly recommend Gary for a regular clock and a more tricky bell or alarm type clock. read more
