This my first time with the clay studio, I really enjoyed my time and so did my client. She is 94 and she really worked that machine to create her perfect piece. Great for date night, girls night out, family time or honestly anything! I did the pottery date night class and it was so awesome! It starts out with a small cocktail hour (no alcohol, other beverages and finger foods) in the clay studio gift shop. You get some time to look some cool stuff on display and can purchase them too! The actual pottery making was around 90mins, 60mins on the wheel and about 30mins to glaze the piece. There is one main instructor and a few assistant instructors that walk around and help you out. You watch a demo first and then get hands on at making your own bowl! The instructors are really patient and if you mess up, they'll hand you another ball of clay. I screwed up many of my pieces and got super embarrassed but they'd joke and make it fun. You get to pick 2 pieces to keep out of all the ones you make during the 60mins. I ended up with 2 small succulent pots, super excited to put my plants in! The glazing is pretty simple. There are a handful of basic colors to choose from and you just paint them on. Afterwards the studio will fire the pieces and then ship then to an address you designate. We got ours a little earlier than 2weeks so it was a nice surprise! I would definitely go to another session again and may even commit to the longer semester classes...just need to free up time . If you're considering this, definitely do it! read more

This is a fun gallery to hit during First Friday. it always has an eclectic mix of pottery, plates, tea kettles, sculptures, and other clay creations inside it. The Clay Studio also has 2 huge floors. so it has plenty of art to see. most of it can be pretty expensive, especially when it comes to a bunch of plates. And a lot of the displays get repetitive very quickly though. The Clay Studio also has classes for anyone who is looking to learn the trade. another good thing about the gallery is that it always has a keg on tap. so it's a good place to go if your looking for a $3 cup of Victory or Yards. And the money you get the beer with goes towards expanding upon their classes. So it goes to a good cause. read more

My daughter bought us two tickets for a one-time workshop as Christmas gifts for $80 total. Class itself was fine, but communication on their part is terrible. Each person is allowed to take home two of their works, to which the Studio fires it for you and ships them to you (all included in the price). When we received our finished works, each of us received one of our mugs as broken. Many ofbroken pieces were put inside one of the mug as if they broke prior to shipping. We were deeply saddened to see each of our works that we were so excited to receive arrive broken and unusable. We sent two emails to the Studio expressing our deepest disappointment and recommendations to better package the finished pottery, and both correspondences were ignored. So, we each were only left with one of our works in the end. read more

The Clay Studio has wonderful resources and facilities. The only problem is I have tried 3 times in the past week to go there, but could not find parking. (This has been a problem in the past as well, so it's a perpetual issue.) I looked for over an hour each time. So it not only cost me gas and tolls to get there, I've wasted my money on a place I can't even get inside of, because I can't park. I am disabled, so am not always able to walk the 3.5 blocks to and from a paid parking lot. So I am out $350 for a service I can't use. read more

The Clay Studio was truly the perfect gift. My boyfriend and I went this weekend to celebrate Valentine's Day. There was an impressive spread of egg and cheese empanadas, fruit, muffins, coffee, mimosas, and more to graze on before we began the class. The instructors did a great job of showing us how to form the clay and getting us started on the wheel. They came around throughout the class and were very patient with all our questions. We could mold as many flats as we wanted but only decorated and "fired" two of them to take home. It's nice because The Clay Studio takes care of that and ships it directly to your home. You just get to enjoy and leave. They do most of the cleaning too. I can't wait to do another ceramics class (and to see the finished product once it's baked). Feeling inspired! Since attending the valentines special, I have been pushing date night on friends and family before I even say hello. I've even recommend it out of the blue to people I haven't talked to in months. It was really that good of a time. The night started off with us hustling from the free spot we found eight blocks northwest of the studio, growing increasingly frustrated with all the free parking we passed on the way (especially the spots directly in front of the building). Luckily, once we were inside and up the three flights of stairs, the wine started flowing and a chill mood promptly settled over us. They began by letting us explore, mingle, drink (stocked ice tubs of kenzinger/lager/etc, yellow tail wines, and champagne), and munch (chafing dishes of something vegetarian i refused to let my eyes see, and breaded sesame chicken chunks with dipping sauces of dill yogurt and horseradish chutney, a cheese and cracker plate, and a tray full of keish) for about 15 minutes, then they settled us in at our wheels and gave us a brief but enlightening tutorial on the essentials, and finally it was time to create. "Throwing" went a little rough in the beginning for some [me], but they explained that we had unlimited clay to work with, so no worries there. My initial desire to make 4 foot plus urns or such was dampened by my hands' inability to do what my brain was telling them to do to the clay, but the constant flow of assistants offering tips and advice mixed with much positive reinforcement and praise left me quite satisfied with the lob-sided soup bowl I was actually able to complete. Apparently if I had been more skilled/swift I could have made two pieces to keep, but quality over quantity was my real concern (who wants a leaky coffee mug). With about a half hour left in the class they began urging us to paint our masterpieces, but when I left at 9:15 (class ended at 9) folk were still working away with no rushing from the instructors. This date night was a special occasion event, so prices were doubled, but i think the regular ones offer the same amenities for $30, only you'll have to pay an insubstantial amount to have what you created glazed, fired, and sent to you (it was covered in our cost for this one). What I gathered is that potters the nation over come here to study, and what they make in their learning helps fund the school and lets us come fool around on the cheap. Date night is a great chance for anyone to get a first taste of pottery, but I'll let the other reviews tell you about classes and such, just know that it's seriously a worthwhile experience, and I highly recommend it for everyone as a first or 700th date, group outing with friends, or even a spot where you can fly solo. read more

Came here for a private event for 8 people. The day started off with a table of complimentary beer, wine, and snacks! Carin was helpful not only scheduling the event the week of but also helped us while wheel throwing. I can't remember our Instructors name at this moment, but she was wonderful!!! However l, all four items ( my husband two plus Mine) where packed together in a small box and both of my pots arrived chipped. Had to throw them out. I contacted the studio twice through their web site and never heard back from them. The price for the date night event was $90:00 a piece which included wine and appetizers. I was very excited about picking up my work from the workshop I previously wrote a review about but was very sad after picking it up. The people there were very friendly but when I got in the car and opened my cups, my dragon's tail - which would be the handle - was missing; an eye and ear was missing too. If it had fallen off, I would have appreciated it if they gave me the broken pieces and either told me when I went to pick it up or wrote a note. They also did not glaze the whole bowl to the bottom (not under) so the colors are different and the feel is rough. read more

Where do I begin? I decided I wanted to do something different for my birthday. I found the Clay Studio and decided to take a chance. My friends and I visited this place and boy did we have a ball! Our instructor, Daniel was very patience and personable. He was an excellent instructor for this class. I would love to come back for another class. I thought the price was good and the class size was just right to make sure everyone receives a hands on experience. It is also nice that you get to keep two of the many items that you make. Additionally, you can make or mess up as much clay as your heart desires. I would highly recommend this place for groups and for alone. read more

I was looking for a fun, artsy, slightly different date night, and the Clay Studio fit the bill perfectly! First off, their service is amazing! They are honestly so nice and easy to work with. I had something important come up at the last second, and I was worried I wouldn't be able to return the date night. The Clay Studio was extremely accommodating and worked with me to reschedule. I was impressed to say the least. They opened the place up a half hour before the date night for those who want a little wine, cheese, crackers (try the waffle crackers), and beer. Then at 7, the instructors tell you a little about the place, introduce the different floors, and talk a little about what some artists are working on. You get to walk up to the third floor and pass through their galleries and even some artists working on huge clay Ben Franklins or other fun projects, which is really cool. And it's even better if you pass them on your way out since you'll appreciate their work more after you've tried to throw your pottery (and probably failed). Then we split into two groups for more personalized attention (1 instructor and 2 assistants 12 or so people) and chose seats. The instructor taught us the entire process and created a fine bowl in about five minutes. She made it look so easy! Luckily, they were super friendly and helped us during the process, as we were struggling to remember all the directions and to shape the clay how we wanted. They had a ton of clay that we could take, and we pretty much got to make as much as we could in 1.5 hours. In the last half hour, we all painted our best works. You have to pay $10 shipping and processing (aka firing it up in the kiln) per board, which fits about 2 bowls, and you can even share one board with your partner. I wasn't a great potter, but we thought the whole experience was well worth the price (usually only $35 per person), and my boyfriend loved the surprise! Our bowls turned out pretty nice, and we got them within three weeks. read more

My boyfriend and I received a gift card for clay studio, and finally came for Friday Night Date Night. We arrived about 30 minutes before the class started, as suggested on the email we received. We were greeted by friendly front desk staff who signed us in, gave us name tags, and told us to help ourselves to drinks and snacks. Also told us we could walk around and look at all the art. Around 7ish, the class was finally beginning. The very friendly front desk employee gave us a little background about Clay Studio and the staff that work there, then instructed all of us to head to the third floor, where a resident showed us step by step how to use a wheel. Our teacher, Daniel, was very funny and taught us basic skills that we were to use on our own pieces of art. Man, does he make it look EASY! Once our lesson with Daniel was over we each got our own wheel, apron, bucket of water, sponge, and clay---off we went to create our masterpieces. Fear not if you are inexperienced, I hadn't played with clay since high school many many many years ago, and it was my boyfriend's first time. There were a few assistants walking around helping us with technique, and if they saw we were really struggling, they'd let us start over with a fresh new clay ball. Everyone was super encouraging and helpful. The last part of the evening involved painting and decorating our pieces. You have a few colors to choose from, and the paint is shared among the entire table with your classmates. I had to email Clay Studio to make the reservation because we had a gift card for payment. We had about $35 balance on our gift card as per my confirmation email, and wanted to use it, but of course we forgot the gift card! There was no record of this transaction in their system which bummed us out a little bit. We ended up just paying the $10 fee to have our pieces shipped to us. -- Review on Date night only -- The Clay studio was started in 1974 for artist needing a workspace, and now its non-profit education organization that houses pottery from artist all over the world. The studio even has residency programs for artists. My boyfriend and I attended Date night at The Clay studio and it was one of our most memorable dates yet. Every detail was true to the description listed online. It was fun and romantic. Likes - - A table full of snacks, including chocolate, cheese, cracks, beer and wine, was available before class. We proceed to eat one too many chocolates while checking out the gallery on the 1st floor. The snacks and drinks are then moved upstairs so we could continue to eat and drink while working. The staff was more than happy to pour us another glass. - The instructors were amazingly helpful. They made throwing pottery easily! A 10 mins demonstration was done prior to getting our hands dirty, but most people still struggled. There were about 2-3 instructors who were constantly going around helping everyone. One instructor, Duke, was super funny and did not give up on my lack of pottery throwing skills. - If we mess up, they encouraged us to get a new ball of clay and try again. I went through 5 balls of clays before making my final piece. Don't worry, the old clay can be recycled! - As everyone was painting his or her potteries, we asked if can practice throwing some more clay, on the wheel and the instructor were completely fine with that! - Very affordable price! $35 per person. Additional $10 if you want your masterpiece glazed, fired and shipped to your home. You will be given a cardboard to place your pieces on for firing. If you need another cardboard to fit additional pieces, its an extra $10. Dislike - - I have to deduct 1 star, because it has been 1 month and I still have not received the pottery pieces in mail. I called and emailed. I will update this review pending their response. Tips: - Check their website when date nights are available for registration, they are sold out fast!! - Arrived early for drinks and snacks. - Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty or bring clothes to change into. - Try to fit you and your date's pieces into 1 cardboard to avoid paying extra $10. - Plan for 2.5 hrs of date night. The Clay Studio is marvelous. I participated in their "Out of Hand" workshop last Friday night and it was definitely one my favorite city "excursions" to date. After an insufferably long week at the office, it felt great to crack open a beer, roll up my sleeves and indulge my creative spirit in a brand new learning experience. Thanks to the Clay Studio - check, check and CHECK. Shaping the soft, malleable clay atop the revolving pottery wheel is remarkably therapeutic. By uniting touch, vision, action and mind in such a deliberate and unique way, being at the wheel releases stress while also unleashing inner inspiration sometimes stifled by the conforms and habituality of our society. **RECORD SCREECH** Okay, okay, enough of the pseudo-philosophical rant, but I did truly enjoy my experience here. So seriously, get out there, explore your artistic side and CREATE SOMETHING - you will not regret it. Other areas of importance: +They will fire, glaze and ship your creations to you for $5 (all you can fit on the cardboard platform provided) +The "instructors" (aka resident artists/associates/recent art school graduates) are great - friendly, attentive and oh so very helpful to those inexperienced "sculptors". +They also provide light snacks: chips and salsa (and spicy black bean dip, which was delicious), pretzels and of course beer and red/white wine. read more

The Clay Studio is world-class. This non-profit is particularly close to my heart, but because of the recent extension of their location I'm even more apt to say this. Prior to their expansion, the space was always cramped; a stifled burgeoning of studios and gallery and school, etc. And now, the already impressive org is just another step closer to perfection. The shows always have something of interest to me (which is hard to say for a gallery in cc). The school has some really patient instructors. The resident artist program is one of the best in the world for ceramic art. AND then, there's the Claymobile - a mobile art program for (generally) underfunded schools in the city. Seriously?! There are few (if any) NPs that are able to accomplish all of these tasks in one organization. They've always impressed me for this reason. Plus, the space is just plain Old-City-classy. I highly recommend you visit this space and give time/money if you have it to spare. read more

Came here on a First Friday with a few friends, mainly because I had to write about First Friday in Old City for a class I was taking on Philadelphia Arts and Culture, but I tagged along with a classmate of mine (at her suggestion, since The Clay Studio was hosting a Make-Your-Own Christmas Tree Ornament activity as well as a gallery exhibition) and invited another friend of mine to come with us. There were so many unique and interesting pieces in the gallery, and not only did we spin through the exhibition multiple times; we also met students from other Philly colleges and made our own Christmas tree ornaments! Having taught arts and crafts at a day camp for three summers I love anything that has to do with arts and crafts, so this was just like being back at work, except I didn't have to worry about teaching or campers. The Clay Studio also offers ceramic instruction, artist residencies, and date nights, on which you can bring friends and/or a significant other and pay a flat fee for light fare and drinks as well as a ceramics activity. I have yet to experience one of those, but I guess I'll have to in the future :) read more

The Clay Studio is a great find. If you have kids - they have Clay Camps and programs for kids of all ages to learn about pottery and ceramic arts. For adults there are ever-changing exhibits and great merchandise. The organization is well run and we worked with Clay Studio to host a silent auction and reception there for the Friends Child Care Center. Management was great and the have a kitchen facility. Can't wait until my little one can go to clay camp (starts at age 5). You can have your garage parking validated at Parkominium up the street. read more

The Clay Studio is fantastic, and definitely a crowd-pleasing kind of store/gallery/studio. Their gallery area always seems to have interesting exhibits - its amazing what artists do with clay, and the shows really complement what they offer in their boutique. They are constantly stocked with an amazing selection of ceramic products available for purchase from a large collection of artists. There are many different designs and styles, and most are pretty reasonably priced (although I always seem to pine after the unaffordable ones). Most of the items are standard plates, bowls, cups, mugs, jugs, vases, etc., but there's also more sculptural pieces and jewelry too. But what's truly great about this place is that they also offer classes and public programs for kids and adults! read more

The Clay Studio is one of my all-time favorite galleries. On the whole, the level of craftsmanship is extraordinary. What truly distinguishes the Clay Studio is the absence of a point of view---other than the pursuit of excellence---in its diverse exhibits and offerings. One can find here everything from small spare, utilitarian vessels to highly elaborate clay creations that tell a layered story. The Clay Studio is one of my favorite places to pick up unique gifts, too. Nothing more effectively conveys the sentiment that "you are special" than a one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece of art or fine craft. For First Friday attendees, the Clay Studio is a must see. read more

Extraordinary. Went here a few weeks back for a friday "date night" with my wife. What a blast! Wonderful instructors, beautiful facility, tasty snacks and drinks, and Al Green on the sound system. REVIEW IS OF DATE NIGHT ONLY! This review should have been 4 star review but there was a billing issue... We arrived early as suggested in the e-mail confirmation. There was a small reception with beer, wine, cheese, and crackers. Folks mingled and looked through the studio. Despite arriving early as the e-mail requested, the class started almost 30 minutes late because they were waiting on other couples to arrive. I get that you don't want to have to repeat instructions but it seems a bit unfair to the folks who arrived on time, as requested, to have to wait beyond the class start time because others weren't as courteous. The class itself was pretty cool and our instructors were great. Unfortunately, I do not remember their names, all I can remember is that I would gender them as women. The Clay Studio does not have a pick-up option and you have to pay $10.00 to have your pieces shipped to you. I wasn't particularly impressed with anything I created and declined. The two friends with whom I attended each picked one of their items and split the cost by sharing the rather small box and having their items shipped to one place. The billing issue... First, let it be said that I paid with a credit card on the night of the event. Despite this, on May 26th the friend that had coordinated the outing received an outstanding invoice in my name for $35.00. I immediately called the Clay Studio, as instructed in the e-mail she received, to follow-up. I left an message for Rachel letting her know that I had indeed paid the bill and had a credit card statement that indicated as much. Her responses...*crickets* So on June 8, while sifting through the e-mails in my inbox, I decide to call again. This time I speak with Charity. Charity listens to the reason for my call and then immediately finds the outstanding invoice. After repeating that I paid the bill, she then ask for the last four digits of the card. After looking it up, she finds the card payment but finds that it is attached to my friend's name. At this point, I am beyond confused. 1) My friend is not the cardholder or an authorized user, how does the system pull her name when my card is swiped? 2) Even if the system does pull my friend's name instead of mine, which is odd, then why is my friend being sent an outstanding invoice? Her name or mine, at that point, the bill is still paid. Charity, while very polite, did not have an answer to these questions and asked that I send her my credit card statement. While I complied, ultimately, this seemed a bit unnecessary. At the point the system shows the bill is paid, it seems like I should be sent on my way with a "thank you for following up when we didn't" and "we'll fix our system." Glad I didn't pay with cash. Anyone else who goes will probably have a good time and this was more than likely a one-off. However, as this billing issue was odd enough, and doesn't seem to be resolved, it was worth noting. read more

The gallery featuring resident or guest artists at The Clay Studio isn't the only thing cool about this place: they have one-of-a-kind pottery sales where profits go to the non-profit Studio. Some pottery isn't glazed but they might allow you to add some color/glaze yourself in the studio. They offer classes in different concentrations for kids and adults; beginners and those who can create a life-size model of oneself. I'm taking a beginner's "Throwing Concentration" class* and the instructor is patient and articulate (important for a student with no artistic ability, such as self). He starts every class with a demonstration on a new technique (making a cylinder, trimming, glazing, etc.). It's a small class (about 13 ppl) and everyone definitely works at a different pace so the instructor gives some one on one time with each student throughout the class.** If you don't want to take a full semester's worth of classes, several times a year they offer Date Night Classes. Its a great way to get a taste of the studio, for those who are looking to get a little dirty and creative or those who want to recreate the infamous scene in Ghost while kicking back some brews. If you do end up taking classes/workshops, the stairway up to the Studio is quite elaborate. The walls are made up of bits of mirrors and other colorful objects that give me the urge to bat at it like a cat every time I go to class. The Clay Studio offers a lot more than the gallery on the first floor and the members are keen on making your experience with them as rewarding as possible. *Did you just picture the gorilla at your local zoo throwing feces? No silly, "Throwing" is referred to the process from the time the clay is thrown on the wheel to the time the wheel is stopped. **This is my 6th week, while the other kids are busy re-creating the Philadelphia Skyline, I could barely make a cylinder. My instructor saw the frustration and offered me some extra guidance. Wahoo, now I can make a bowl! Never thought making a bowl would feel so rewarding. So I actually have yet to physically enter this location but I have always noticed it on my way home from work. However, this week, I came home to an assortment of coffee mugs (aka works of art) waiting for me as a present. Not only are the absolutely beautiful, but they are dishwasher safe! (be careful about them moving around though, that could cause them to crack if they hit other dishes). Each cup came with a little write up from the artist, which really gave it a nice touch -- I've kept them in the mugs so that I can read them as I'm drinking my coffee. Apparently April's First Friday is geared towards pottery, and I will be sure to make this my first stop! read more

I can now say I officially love the clay studio. I had gone a few times during first Friday to look around. In July, I noticed a flyer to sign up for a project after the August night market, where they would also be promoting their young supporters membership option. I am super un-creative, but I wish I was creative, so I signed up right away. After the August first Friday slowed down, we were taken upstairs to the school, where there were lots of snacks, wine, and beer. Our project for the night was a clay tile, basically just making designs in it, and then glazing. I listened to the speech about the young supporters, and about what they clay studio does as a whole, and decided I would sign up for a year. I went to a September Out of Hand work shop where I had a chance to try the pottery wheel, and signed up for my first real class which started last night. For now, I'm just trying the clay studio sampler. It's 5 weeks, and we get to do both hand and wheel work. The instructor is awesome. The price includes clay, glazes, and firing. I get a discount as a member. There are lots of open studio hours where I can go in to keep working on my projects. I hope my friends and family are looking forward to some mediocre pottery this Christmas. read more

Great place for taking a beginners course to clay. I took the 5 week sample which introduces students to using the wheel and hand building. Classes give students access to studio time which is available almost every day. Teachers are great and atmosphere is nice. Class sizes are about 10-14 depending. They also offer classes beyond the sampler to further develop your skills. read more

The Clay studio always has unique and fun things on display. If you go on first friday they will hook you up with cheese, grapes and crackers, and more importantly beer(donation). I have fun every time I go there. There is always some sort of interesting sculpture or some crazy piece of art at the Clay Studio. Check it out, you won't be let down. read more

Recently went for a friday "date night" class with my wife and had a terrific time. Great staff, hands-on time on the pottery wheel with personalized instruction (ratio was 2-3 students per staff member), and they supply beer/wine/hors d'oeuvres. It's a great deal and a great time. Great place for classes. I've taken the heads and hands class and the instructor is very nice and talented. The class has a range of talent, and the environment is noncompetitive. The price is very reasonable for the experience. Most of the people in this class are females in the 35-55 range, but there are some men and younger adults too. read more

I took ceramics in college and was feeling a lul in my creative outlets since graduation. On somewhat of a whim I singed up for a class at the Clay Studio. WOW! money well spent. Instruction was helpful and motivating. Class mates were fun and friendly. Facility is top notch. They even have a school store where you can purchase supplies if needed right on sight (reasonable prices :) There are a wide variety of open studio times that are free if you are registered for classes. At first I thought the price was high but after spending time there I realized how reasonable the price was. Great class offerings. Price might seem hi to some but if you look at how long the passes are the hourly rate is actually very very affordable. The clay is very cheap and everything else is free.
