I happened to walk past Paradigm Gallery + Studio on Saturday when I was walking around Old City. I looked their large glass windows on the front of the building and decided to pop in to see what I could tell from outside was quite fun and colorful and playful art. I'm sure the artists they're showing changes, but the art when I visited was youthful and fun. It perhaps wasn't quite to my taste for purchasing, but I enjoyed seeing what they were exhibiting. They also had small shop area for making purchases beyond he art they had displayed. A fun stop whether you're in the market for some art or not. read more

I love going to this gallery, especially for First Fridays. I've discovered many new artists and also seen artwork by artists I already knew. I love how they curate the art and have a variety of different art beyond paintings. The large sculptural works have been my favorite. read more

Between solid art shows from incredible local artists, and the occasional art class or other event, Paradigm has enough going for it to make it an easy contender for best art gallery in South Philly. I first came across Paradigm when I braved the only substantial snowstorm of this winter to catch the Streets Dept 5th Year Anniversary Show which featured the likes of Nosego, Kid Hazo, Joe Boruchow, Old Broads, and then some. Since then I've come across exhibits like the self portraits of mosaic master Isaiah Zagar, and the mobile home inspired art of Drew Leshko. Past exhibits have featured incredible street art pieces, portraits of all kinds, and sound out surrealist and impressionist works of varying degree. Opening parties generally have a good lineup of the artists in house, but if you can't make those Paradigm does a good job of keeping regular hours. plus if you go on a Sunday you might come across things like a free art class. read more

Times you should check this place out: 1. KILLING TIME BEFORE BRUNCH Stumbled in one Sunday while waiting for table to open up at Hungry Pigeon and loved this place! Bright, airy, and totally not intimidating. The owners are young and super nice. We talked a bit about the art and an upcoming show, but they weren't pushy at all. 2. FREE ART CLASS Was back last Sunday for some Sunday Funday arts and crafts and it was awesome! Follow them on Facebook or instagram for details about events. The class was free and lasted 3 hours (people left earlier). It was relaxed and a small group, plenty of personal attention from the instructor, a local artist. We learned a really cool art form called quilling, which is paper art. The only drawback is that we didn't get to keep our artwork-they will be auctioned and then sold at a community art show which helps fund these classes. Great idea, and I still had a great Sunday and learned a new skill. There's a good chance I'll try to buy back my piece though! Any time you're walking by/shopping/it's raining/you want to buy art/you want to look at art. read more

We got the fortunate chance to pop into this clean, lovely, and welcoming space on our last day trip down to Philadelphia from NYC. Just a few blocks off of too-touristy South Street in the heart of charming Queen Village, we found a contemporary art oasis. I'd been familiar with Paradigm from their booths at art fairs and digitally, but it was wonderful to encounter them in their own element. When we were there, a terrific show by Philadelphia artist Drew Leshko was up, featuring iconic Philadelphia buildings and street scenes painstakingly recreated via painted and patina-d paper. I didn't purchase anything, but were I a long-time Philadelphia resident I could definitely see getting a piece as a hometown homage. Me? I'm holding out for one that's NYC or Miami focused (my dual domiciles.) There was also an excellent portrait painter whose work was on display in the rear gallery space (not really a separate space, just the back of the main one.) The team are very welcoming and also recommended The Hungry Pigeon across the street for lunch which was unique and scrumptious. I couldn't quite put my finger on whether to call it Southern cuisine or country-tinged Mid-Atlantic fare. Regardless, the breakfast bowl and breakfast salad with scrapple were insanely good. Yet, I digress! Overall, if you live in Philadelphia - consider yourself lucky! Having easy access to an arts program that straddles the line between global and local, showing equal parts hometown hero artists and rising art stars from around the world, is an incredible boon for any city. If you are visiting from New York, DC, or Baltimore for a day (+) trip or in Philadelphia on a longer trip, Paradigm is definitely worth a pop-by, and a closer look. A+++ read more

Art Galleries seemed somewhat intimidating to me and definitely out of reach budget wise. However, I love PARADIGM! The owners are incredibly gracious and have gotten me very excited at building a modest art collection one piece at a time. They are invested in the community and I really treasure that. They offer free art classes which are so informative and fun. Seek this place out. The area has a lot to offer too! read more
