This is a cute little candy store at the Dana Point Harbor and the owner was nice enough to stay later so we could buy some honey comb and truffles today. It is all so deliciously fattening!! The Chocolate Solider is a core childhood memory for me! I remember coming to the harbor on the weekends with my parents, getting lunch or dinner at El Torito and then going to The Chocolate Solider for dessert. They have some incredibly delicious hand made chocolates and their truffles are to die for. They also used to have beanie babies - during the height of the beanie baby craze, so you know that was also part of the trip! I'm so happy they have stayed, despite the many changes coming to this area! read more

I went today 4/17 to buy Easter Candy and the sales girl couldn't give me the time of day. She ignored me as if I wasn't there. She was on the phone and I guess her phone call was more important than a sale. I walked out and never made a purchase. I would never go back, poor customer service. read more

The treats they offer are amazing. The older woman who works there is super friendly and helpful. I don't like chocolate but whenever I need a nice gift for a chocolate lover, this is where I go. I'm not sure if they make the chocolates there or if they get them from somewhere like Rocky Mountain chocolates but everyone loves them. They wrap them up an a cute box and they make a great gift. The Chocolate Soldier has been around since I moved to DP, approx '76. The orig owner sold the business about 10 years ago and went to great pains to ensure its new owner would carry the torch in the same tradition. They succeeded and its current owner also owns/operates its factory in Laguna at the old Pottery Shack location off PCH. This is one of Orange County's treasures that survived because it's consistently amazing in its confectionery quality and assortment of unique gifts. Negative reviews stemming from personal gripes due to a lack of parental supervision can be ignored. Some are insulted when they can't get unlimited free samples like Costco. I've seen it all when visiting to purchase Easter baskets here. Their 10-15 varieties of truffles are unmatched. The TLC required to make them by hand and be so mouth watering won't go unnoticed. The Chocolate Soldier is a privilege and tradition for my family and Dana Point. read more

MMMmmm MMMmmm MMMMmmm. The chocolates from here are sexual, and my favorite in all of South OC. I trick my brain into making it think I'm having sex. Ohhhh chocolateeee youre so naughty!! Hint: Cloud 9 Meltaway. I don't know what makes a meltaway a meltaway but it MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH. They have many different meltaways as well. They also have homemade marshmellow blocks covered in milk or dark chocolate. I'm a marshmellow freak, if it has them, give it to me. Did I mention the white chocolate mac turtles? How about their 30+ truffles? You can smell this place when you start walking toward el torito in the harbor....smells like chocolate heaven. I wish I grow wings right now. I usually go there every Tuesday night before Taco Tuesday, or after if they are still closed and sometimes she is still open after 8pm! Hmm I really wish I could give a great 5 star review. I had a great experience today at the chocolate soldier. The woman who helped us was very friendly and knowledgeable. My grandma in law was telling me how amazing this place was and was very excited to take me. We picked a few pieces and even shared a sample. Our 6 pieces cost $18. Which I thought was pretty steep but it is very large pieces and I understand probably a small family owned business. Excited to share with my husband I cut all the pieces in half. Truffles are my favorite so saving that for last I was very excited to share that after dinner. I grabbed my piece and was confused to see a thin white fuzzy layer between the truffles center and the chocolate coating. In instantly new and my stomach turned. Pretty disappointed to say the least. My husband hadn't even started on his pieces and doesn't trust any of them now. $18 worth of chocolate in the trash. Maybe in the future smaller batches could insure better quality since this isn't a high traffic area. Disappointed hope you guys are able to turn things around. read more

Stopped by the chocolatier this evening to get a gift box, and was incredibly upset with how we were treated. The woman helping us continually rolled her eyes and scoffed at our chocolate choices. In response to one of the pieces we picked out, she scoffed and said, "Well what do I know, I'm just a chocolatier." It was clear she wanted us to buy a larger box and didn't want to tell us the prices, and kept putting pieces in the box that we hadn't picked but were more expensive. At $3-4 per chocolate piece, I'd expect delicious chocolate, and it was definitely not. Would NOT recommend and will be telling our local family and friends about what a negative experience we had here. read more

There is an older lady who was at the shop when i visited and boy she has an attitude on her. She was rude and made you felt like you were wasting her time. The chocolates were yummy, but the service, terrible. No matter what the price(which is VERY expensive), you cannot get over the bad customer service. read more

The owner of this place is abhorrently rude! Never will I set foot in here again, and I will do everything in my power to ensure nobody else does either. My daughter was browsing candy and was asked if she was going to get anything, in which my daughter replied that she was not sure since she was undecided. The owner then asked her to leave! I've never heard of such rudeness! Avoid this place like the plague; she does not deserve your business. I can't really give you a review on the chocolate because what seems to be the owner of this place was so rude and nasty I didn't even what to go in. The lady must own the store or possibly the whole building because I can't imagine how a store like this can stay in business and pay rent. Save ur money and if you have a craving for some chocolate go to the liquor store down the way and buy a pack of M&Ms. I'm sure they are just as fresh as the chocolate this bitter old lady sells. The shop is small. The selection is mediocre. The melt away was awesome. We shared the peanut butter one. I agree with the Yelper that said the older woman who worked there was not friendly. She wasn't rude but you would think that since we are the only people coming in to her store she would be happy to sell something. Maybe she lives in Dana Point too. Don't bother with the peanut clusters,very over priced. Probably won't go back. I live an hour north of here and would drive another hour south of here to get peanut clusters from the friendly people in Seaport villiage. read more

We LOVE visiting Chocolate Soldier when we are at the Dana Point Harbor. I have never received bad service when I have gone and I enjoy my visits when I am there. My "go-tos" are the Cloud 9 melt-aways, Peanut Butter Cups and the Dark Chocolate Almond Turtles. I do agree that the prices are a bit steep, but since it's become tradition, I don't really complain. I know that this is a branch off the main store in Laguna Beach, but I have never been to that location. I will be sure to do so when in Laguna. I would definitely recommend the shop! read more

Love the Dana Point Harbor and often overlook the general quality of food there because the location and the friendly laid-back service is so amazing. HOWEVER...this is the exception. Went in with the family - mother, brother with his wife and three-year-old, and me. We ooohed and aaahed at the yummy looking treats. Two ladies (both older) were standing near what looked like a cash register. Neither looked at us or asked to help. We talked amongst ourselves and made our selection. My mother cheerfully looked up and told the ladies we were ready. One of them had a bit of a smile when she looked up to acknowledge us FOR THE FIRST TIME but the other literally YELLED that they were busy "closing out" (it was 2:00 pm!) and that we would have to wait! The looks on our faces must have said it all as she glanced at her co-worker and said, with a smirk, "apparently I was too harsh!" At which point, no apology was given. She went back to "closing out" and never said another word to us! We all, in unison, turned to walk out with our jaws collectively on the floor. We met a lovely couple walking in as we were on our way out and my brother looked at them and offered a quiet "Godspeed, I wouldn't go in there if I were you!" They giggled and walked out with us! Chocolate is always OK (not great) but the lady who runs it is so rude. She was upset I paid with a $20 bill when she was out of 2 out of 3 of the chocolates we wanted and had one left of the 3rd choice. We would have purchased more if they had the chocolates we wanted. I've never received attitude for paying with a $20 bill. We will not return. read more
