You can choose to have your fish beer battered, panko crumbed, tempura battered, gluten-free battered or grilled and you can have hand cut Agria chips,crinkle cut chips, beer battered chips, kumara chips or curly fries. There are several house salads and sides on offer or you can select something from their burger/sandwich menu. We opted to have grilled tarakihi and trevally, hand cut Agria chips and a coleslaw. I decided to go here based on the fact that it's the number 1 ranked fish and chips spot in Auckland on Yelp. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this establishment is a smaller one, and not a fine dining restaurant. Since it's a bit smaller, you can see the food being cooked for you behind the counter. I love the fact they you can choose to have a heavier version of F&C with a grilled fish or seared and baked with veggies. I wish I could give it a 4.5/4.75 starts only because there doesn't seem to be a restroom for customers(would rather my hands not smell like fish) and you have to pay $1-2 for condiments. I fearsomely feel like ketchup or tartar(at least ONE) condiment should be complimentary, but I'm not going to dock a star because I'm a little cheap. My husband and I could not go to New Zealand and leave without trying the Kiwi staple food of fish and chips! After some extensive research on the best fish and chips served in Wellington, I settled on Mt. Vic Chippery. We were more than satisfied with our choice. For starters, there is a weekday special, which is a complete steal. For $10 NZD (about $7.10 USD), you can panko crust breaded market fish, a generous serving of crinkle cut fries, and a heap of cole slaw. You can't beat that. Not even in the States. We also ordered calamari for $6 NZD (about $4.26 USD). This was a favorite among us three. The calamari was fresh and chewy yet soft. Everything was amazingly fresh, from the fish to the potato fries and cole slaw. Everything. On top of that, the food arrived no more than 5 minutes after we had ordered. This was an extra cherry on top for us since we were starving before we came here. Even though the weekday special was already a great price, we were able to make a few substitutions, which is unheard of in the States. I was pleasantly surprised the chefs were so agreeable! We were happy with our food. One special per person, and we all had leftovers for takeaway! Again, slightly larger than moderate servings. If you are a pickier eater, the menu boasts a large variety of fish, fried food, and other non-seafood items. Is this a place I would come back to? Without a doubt. read more

The food here is pretty much absolutely excellent! We tried multiple types of fish, burgers, and chips -- all of which are served in large portions -- and thought that we would happily re-order any of it again...although the temptation to switch up our orders with other things on the menu would also be strong. It's easy to order for delivery if you can't get to the restaurant. The only disappointment to several of us were the standard fries/chips, which were large blocks of potato that were overly mushy and didn't have the wonderful flavors of the other types of chips. Almost Wellington's equivalent of fish smith! I went here the other night with a big group of friends and between us we got kumara chips (amazing), Cajon fish burgers, vege burger and crumbed snapper. Apart from two order glitches and asking for more fish in my burger, the staff were amazing, helpful and thoughtful which is why I give them top marks. Everyone was happy with their meals and we would definitely return. The portions are hearty and the burgers are really good value at $10 each. Thanks Mt. Tickets flying everywhere, hot bubbling fryers making all kinds of pop pop bubble bubble noises. The Chef calling orders, moving tickets and salting chips in a constant whirl of motion and action. Simple build your own blackboard menu. They say "make it your way!" You know they are proud of their fresh proteins when the iced portions are 1 meter inside the front door. Multiple fresh fish filets in your face! Step 1 more meter and ogle at the pass window where they plate the orders. What a great find. I had beer battered snapper and fries. You can choose about ten different varieties of fish (ex. Salmon) and multiple ways to prepare it. They also have other options instead of regular fries (sweet potato fries). This is a great restaurant and exceptional service. read more

Nice way to order, by choosing fish from 3 choices, choosing sauce, cooking method and chip type. Butterfish for fish and chips and then another butterfish for grilling with veggies. Both were excellent. Kumara chips were the best ever. Sadly no beer or wine available and it's not too comfortable to sit to eat in the place. Tall hard metal stools, small tables. The Mt Vic Chippery is a nice place and has good food. We ate there on New Year's Day. Take away is their primary business and they do delivery as well. We ordered Red Snapper, Ribaldo, Gurnard, with Kringle fries and Kumera fries. The portion size was fair but the price seemed a little high for the food and value presented. There were a continuous flow of people through restaurant which is always a good sign for any restaurant. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the Wellington area. read more

Slow. Overpriced. It's the closest place to me, but I've been burned too many times. Stay away.
