Ghastly food, overpriced drinks - £2.80 for a pint of soda?!…read more We chose this place after recently moving to the area, good eateries are thin on the ground, and this place has good reviews, with an impressive website. Because it was a first visit we both stuck to what we thought would be a safe option- fish n chips, although the menu cited a tomato sauce with it, which seemed a bit unorthodox. When the food arrived, the batter was unfortunately sodden with said "sauce" which consisted of apparently canned tomatoes, olives and capers, and did not complement fish and chips in any way imaginable. The fish inside, was pretty invisible, but what was there, was good quality and cooked nicely, but the skin had been left on, so once that was scraped off, there was very little fish in ratio to (now soggy) batter. The accompanying chips were nothing to write home about, clearly reheated, not crispy, and very floury, more resemblent of potato slices which had been cooked in an oven, than the "proper" chips which they purported to be. Their tartare sauce was great, shame about everything else. It was £13 each for the food, pricey for the portion size and quality of the food, and to charge £2.80 for soda water, when every other pub in the area provides it for free, is nothing short of scandalous. I will never come back. Ugh.

Basil Fawlty of chip shops. And that's where the comedy ends, or is it!…read moreAlthough we live in Axminster we usually go to Chard or Seaton for take aways as they are generally better and will continue to do so when we opt for fish and chips. We placed our order for 1 X small cod and chips and 1 X regular cod and chips, waited patiently for 20 minutes and witnessed the almost laughable service unfold. Total chaos os the name of the game in this chip shop, the order being prepared ahead of ours raised some concerns when a piece of fish that was being picked up with bare hands fell apart in to 5-6 pieces and looked quite inedible once the server had finished with it, however she proceeded to place the fish in with the chips and box it up totally unbeknown to the customer who was waiting outside. Then the confusion and chaos stepped up a notch as all 4 of the serving staff became totally confused with my simple order, namely over the piece of fish on display in the serving cabinet and at this stage each of the serving staff picked the piece of fish up with their bare hands trying to determine the weight of it and therefore whether it was a regular or small cod. I raised my concerns and suggested that if there is confusion over safe food handling and my order that I would take refund and leave. At this point the male server became rather aggressive constantly stating his hands were clean, even though he appeared to be the chap who collected the raw fish from the kitchen before frying it. his aggression became elevated as I continued to raise my concerns over food hygiene, to the point he told us to take our refund , watch my attitude and get out. If the owners of this establishment read this I would seriously advise recruiting some experienced management before your current staff run your business in to the ground.

We used to live in Dorset and the fact that a recommendation travelled 4000 miles is impressive...but could the place deliver on a damp grey November Thursday? 13.00 struck on the town clock and in we walk to the quiet cafe bar area, to be met by some delightful staff and seated quickly, after a drink in the rather fetching contemporary bar area. Now this place is not just another seaside cafe...oh no...it's a cut above that. The art on the wall has whimsey, and the large arm chairs would be more often seen in an urban Starbucks setting. The restaurant windows all over look the bay and even on a grey November day there was atmosphere, simple jazz influenced music playing at just the the right level to create ambiance and not kill it. The location on the sea front, is a short sea shell throw away from the new beach, you do indeed have lots of sand in Lyme these days! The sea front had a make over in 2012 and now even has a very smart National Trust shop and was a real surprise. We had taken two local friends and we all ordered, fish chips with mushy peas for some, fresh mussels in a wonderful cream sauce for others and tempura battered vegetables. To drink we had Fentimans ginger beer, Guinness and water. All got 10/10. The bill 80 quid for six was very good value, and we left with a wonderful glow, to go to the gallery in the town and buy a small piece of Garry Jones art . He has an art piece on the restaurant wall....a car door...yes an actual car door with a fantastic ceramic dog leaning out of it! Priceless humour that cannot fail to make one smile. This place is a real find and a cut above the average seaside eatery.

It was shear luck that we ended up here as we could not get a table at our first choice restaurant. It was really good. Lovely food and excellent entertainment with a very accomlished jazz duo. The atmoshere was brilliant even though it was not full that night. Highly recommended.
