Killer Buns - Inside the lobster roll

The Short Version: Good smash burgers, fries and lobster…read morerolls. They have vegan versions too. The Long Version: My husband and I just happened upon Killer Buns while walking around the area. It's where Indian Express used to be (we had no idea it closed). Killer Buns is in the basement and Hangout is on the first floor (Hangout relocated here from 839 Somerset). It was Aug 31, 2025 and I was lured in by the signage saying smash burgers, but alas they said they weren't actually open and were just serving invited guests to a tasting of their vegan menu, but their soft opening was the next day and their soft opening specials were $10 smash burger, fries and a drink and $20 lobster roll, fries and a drink. So I said I'd come back the next day. And I did. And I got one of each of their special combos for my husband and I to share. The smash burger was good. It came with cheese, chopped raw onions and pickles. I liked that it was a plain bun without seeds. The meat had a good flavour and was nicely smashed with crispy edges. I think smashed burgers usually come with minimal toppings, but I would have liked to see some sliced tomatoes and lettuce on the burger. I think this would have elevated the taste. The fries were hot and crispy and tasted like chip wagon fries :) The lobster roll was ok. It's no Luke's Lobster, but we're also not Maine, lol. The lobster meat was just satisfactory in my opinion, but at least I did get a small claw and a few small chunks. There's celery and green onions in it. And it wasn't excessively mayo-laden, like at some places. It was on the small side, the size of a small hotdog bun. Service was good. I chatted with a guy there who might have been one of the owners (?) He said they used to run a food truck and did catering and served food at Bluesfest. They've also been doing smash burgers since 2019. The restaurant is small with just a few seats inside. They do have a small patio out front too. We took our food to go. I read on their socials that they serve vegan food and they have a separate fryer for their vegan items and a separate grill/flat top. So this may be a draw for vegans. Street parking only. My husband and I went to Killer Buns because they offer vegan alternatives to their regular menu…read moreitems. We very much enjoyed everything we tried! I had never had a smashburger before and did not think it was even possible using plant based ingredients, but Killer Buns nailed it! And the fries are perfect.. fresh cut and not at all greasy. The food was very fresh, very very good tasting. A lot of restaurants that offer some vegan or vegetarian foods resort to using pre-frozen highly processed fake meats, but not Killer Buns. Everything is made from scratch using fresh ingredients and wonderful seasonings. The place is small being primarily for takeout, but there is seating inside and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Service was very fast, friendly and attentive. We will be back again and again.

I went here with my brother to get some fries, pogos (aka corn dogs, I hadn't realized that "pogo"…read moreis an exclusively Canadian term until my American friend, Karen K, pointed it out to me, lol) and hot dogs for my little nieces. I have never had a pogo in my life and have no inclinations to change that. I also don't like hot dogs, so all I tried were the fries and they were great. The fries were a bit sweet (from the type of potatoes they use) and they tasted fresh and not from frozen. I liked the texture, they were not mealy. I like that they are unsalted. I think a large was like $6 or something like that. Pogos and hotdogs are $0.99 each. My older niece who is a picky eater and had never had a pogo before, took one bite and proclaimed "I LOVE POGOS!" Lol. She ate one and a half pogos, which is a lot for her. The breading looked crispy. The hotdogs were tiny and they were steamed. The nieces rejected them so my brother and dad ended up eating them. The place is really popular; we had to stand in line for a long time. Decor is old school diner-like. It reminds me of those casse-croutes that are ubiquitous in Montreal like La Belle Province, Lafleur Restaurants, and Green Stop. Most food here is greasy and fried. If you're trying to eat healthy this is not the place to go. It's not my kind of place, but for what it is, I think it's good. It's in a plaza, so lots of free parking.

I was looking forward to trying this based on the reviews and was disappointed. Ordered the poutine…read moreand it just was underwhelming. The gravy didn't have much flavour wasn't warm enough, so the cheese barely melted. It just kind of sat there and was a bit congealed. Fries were nothing the write home about either. I was expecting a lot better based on the reviews. Maybe it was an off day who knows. The inside needs some updating, as it's kind of dark inside, they barely had any lights on.

Wow. No words. AMAZING…read more There's no sign for Sasha, just a white sack that says poutine, hot dogs, sausages. There's seating in the back. Amazing. No words it was immaculate. Poutine had lots of gravy and cheese curds, every bite had the perfect ratio. Even with so much sauce and cheese, fries are crispy even after 30 minutes of eating. The gravy is so well flavored, I liked the bowl clean of the gravy with my sausage. The polish sausage was amazing- Smokey juicy and grilled so yummy. The bread was soft and melted so well with the sausage. I put some gravy on top of the sausage and wow. A MUST! CASH ONLY BTW! The lady so sweet and explained the different flavorings of the sausages :) SO WORTH IT! The best places are the local mom and pop shops! :)

Regrettably, I did not get poutine, but I did get a sausage and it was great!…read more I'm not normally in this area at all, especially at night on a weekend, but we were on the patio at the Laff across the street for a friend's birthday and wanted some grub with our drinks after the Laff's kitchen had closed. We walked over to this little stand, which I actually had no idea existed, to get something quick to-go. There was no line late on a Friday night. We got a few different sausages and poutines and brought them back over to eat on the Laff's patio. It had been a long while since I had a grilled Polish sausage, so that's what I got with a little ketchup, mustard, and some chopped raw white onions. The sausage was perfect, tasty, hot, and not overcooked, just what I was craving and very satisfying. There was only one person behind the counter, a young guy who was very sweet, super fast, and we were really impressed he remembered everything we ordered. They have a small menu of your standard chip wagon fare - fries and poutine, hot dogs and sausages, pogos, and drinks, plus ice cream. Great spot that's open late (until 3am I think) for before/during/after a night out at the bars.
