Omgggg. You guys...This was phenomenal!! WOW!!! January 1, 2025 we remembered we purchased a small $12 bag of jerky while we were in Los Alamos at this stand. We opened it in the late morning...the smell...was like firewood, meat and BBQ sauce. We went to eat it expecting typical jerky... you know, probably a step up from typical jerky. The jerky wasn't that soft stuff you get that mushes in your mouth, nor was it that dry, rough stuff you get stuck in your teeth with a side of spice and random pepper bits. It was like the PERFECT pieces where after you eat good BBQ, the sauce smell just lingers - you need a napkin to eat the jerky! It was fresh, flavorful and definitely had a fresh BBQ saucy effect to it. And it took me all the way back to my actual meal with my husband, where we totally delighted in the experience. The barbecue sauce was addicting! No wonder Guy Fieri has affiliations with this stand!! I mean...talk...about...the best. We were able to make our own little sandwiches out of our barbecue box, they had macaroni and cheese eggrolls ... just delightful. I can't recommend this stand high enough, I miss it! I've driven by their BBQ Rig truck several times, but finally stopped by here yesterday for lunch. They are right off the 154 as you enter Los Olivos. The line was steady the whole time we were there, so clearly a popular spot. We decided to get "The Big Mess," so we could try different items. I was especially excited about the Mac and cheese egg rolls. Oh my gosh- they are so good. I love the spicy sauce on top. They put pepperoncini's in their coleslaw and I'm a big fan of that too. The house made pickles are also really good. Be sure and add one to your order! The meats were great and it was fun to watch them cook everything on the smoker while waiting in line. They don't have anywhere to sit, so be prepared to have to find somewhere to go to eat. We wanted more barbecue sauce than we had, but I didn't see this was an option and since we couldn't eat there. We did not eat at the restaurant but found ourselves in Los Olivos and the catering truck was here. We were excited to try the brisket sandwich. The truck was quite impressive and looked like a good sign that we were in for a treat. After living in Texas for some time I would say we are pretty good judges of proper bbq. Unfortunately this was not. First off, a $16 sandwich should be enough to feed two people. This dry bun, the size of a muffin was crumbly and did nothing to add flavor to the brisket. Now as for the brisket, it was dry and most likely not cooked long and slow as it should be. It was not tender nor moist. We were at Refugio's tasting room when we saw the BBQ truck just outside. We HAD to try them and man- it was good! We ordered a pound of brisket and a pound of tri-tip. We also got 2 hot links. We were very excited to try the BBQ from this food truck...very disappointing. The staff was incredibly nice, and the smell from the smoker/grill was good but the food was less than stellar, especially for the price. In fairness, the meat in my brisket sandwich was pretty good, but the bun was terrible - it was extremely dry and tasted stale. My friend's brisket however was about 75% fat, there was almost no actual meat in his sandwich. I tasted the tri-tip from my other friend's sandwich (we all had a terrible bun), and sadly the meat was flavorless. The sides of coleslaw and pickled veggies were equally disappointing. The slaw was not good at all and the pickled veggies average at best. Unfortunately we didn't discover the subpar food until we arrived at our picnic destination and we were meeting up with friends so no time to go back. Bummer. read more

We stumbled upon them in Los Olivos while wine tasting and loved their BBQ, so much we were delighted to find they also cater events. We had them cater our wedding this May, and they were absolutely amazing! Our guests are still talking about how that was the best wedding food they have ever had!! Kurt does it all with his catering staff. He created some awesome appetizers and everyone drooled over the smoked gouda mac and cheese eggrolls with sriracha mayo during cocktail hour, YUM! For dinner their beef brisket was mouth watering and so tasty, and their ribs were also a fan favorite! They also made awesome sides, like herb roasted potatoes and organic roasted heirloom carrots! They were outstanding and so professional and easy to work with! All their servers and bartenders who helped make our dinner run smoothly were so kind and fun! I went here once before and was blown away by the meat. I had the brisket the first time. Amazing. This time I had the tri-tip sandwich, brisket and ribs to go. The smokiness is delish! I would prefer a baguette or hard roll for the tri-tip but the meat was excellent. I'm picky about coleslaw and not into pickles but I cannot recommend the meat enough. Tender, tasty, and smoky. Exactly what good bbq should be! I'll leave the sides on the side. I go for the MEAT! They are in Los Olivos only on the weekends. Check their Instagram for schedule changes. Had the BBQ at M Special brewery. The pulled pork was cold, the brisket was dry, and the mac and cheese egg roll was just bleh. I took the cold pork back and they kindly replaced it and apologized, but the second order was still cold as could be. The BBQ tastes like it's cooked in an oven with liquid smoke and then warmed (ideally) in their on-site smoker. No real smoke flavor. Not good BBQ, even if it were warm. Good service, but doesn't compensate for the poor food. Oops, cancel that on good service. I experienced Chef's Touch BBQ for the first time today at Draughtsmen's 1 year anniversary. Really cool smoker trailer with a chopping block, prep area and a deep fryer setup. The effort is A+: custom tent covering the prep area, pickled peppers, real paper towels, easy payment kiosk, enticing menu, excellent customer service, smells like heaven. That aside I was quite disappointed with the food. I ordered their sampler platter which had pulled pork, tri-tip, ribs, fried chicken leg, a mac n' cheese egg roll, coleslaw, a bun and pickled peppers. Analysis: my first bite was of the pulled pork. It was moist, juicy and everything texturally a pulled pork should be, but there was an overwhelmingly burnt flavor that permeated through each bit that made it difficult to continue. On to the tri-tip, which was again moist and tender but had that burnt taste like the pulled pork. Out of all the meat I liked the tri-tip the best. Next up, the fried chicken which had a very delicious and crispy skin but a very dry and sad inside. It was as if I just flash fried some chicken for the second time and the inside was cool and dry. Continuing counter-clockwise were the mac n' cheese egg rolls. I recommend this for sure. In fact, the guy behind me in line got two orders and I was thinking "how lame" but turns out he was a genius or a repeat customer. The ribs were barely edible, the opposite of fall off the bone, with a bark like a tree! Coleslaw and pickled peppers were solid. My ratings have gotten tougher now -- no more 5 stars just because I was in a good mood. Subsequent visits to some of my all-stars have been disappointing -- but none compares to the letdown we felt at The Chef's Touch this past spring break. I had introduced S to it last year, and he too was charmed by the spare but inviting interior -- an open kitchen in the back, a row of bookshelves lined with cookbooks and tools, and displays of wine bottles, pots and pans. Chef's Touch was a welcome relief from the smorgasbords and bakeries. Though we'd already had our free breakfast from Olsen's, we were game to eat another breakfast to wash away the sticky sweetness of pastries. I don't remember what we ate, but we loved the strong, black coffee so much that we bought a French press and rhapsodized about opening a similar shop in Pasadena someday. This year, we made the trek from Santa Barbara to Solvang specifically because of Chef's Touch. Our first rude awakening was being told that brunch was now served only on Sundays, so we had to wait 30 minutes till 11 a.m. The big smorgasbord next door was shuttered, the first of several For Lease signs we saw while killing time. Back for lunch, we endured another interminable wait for three dishes, the open-faced proscuttio sandwich, pozole and a breaded pork chop salad with white beans, despite being the only party. The sandwich was decent, but nothing remarkable. The pozole was also tasty, but didn't have enough hominy. My breaded chop was thin and too crispy to cut into pieces for the salad. The dressing was non-descript, and worse, the white beans were missing. The server took it back and asked the cook whether he'd forgotten the beans. There was just enough for my plate. The server quickly erased "white beans" from the chalkboard. The salad was a rip off, undeserving of its "special" designation. We haven't given up on Chef's Touch, but I'm going to be stingier about the stars until it redeems itself. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants, anywhere. I live in LA but my husband and I travel to the Santa Barbera area often for vacation (and wine tasting). We first heard of this place through the Weight Watchers message boards, of all places. We love the sparse atmosphere, a cross between eating in the kitchen (the chef is just feet away) and eating in a small store. I love that they use the freshest ingredients; we've never seen the chef open anything but a can of San Marzano tomatoes. All meat and vegetables are from local farms and cooked in simple, amazing ways. No steak with a demigloss of balsamic and ten other things here. We've only been for lunch and dinner (not exactly big breakfast eaters) and we send everyone here. I recommend the open face panini (prosciutto, crushed tomato marinara and parmesean) for lunch and the lasagna for dinner (hubby recommends the steak). You'll be happy you didn't give in to that odd tourist craving for the Little Mermaid Restaurant across the street! read more

These guys really rock it, not exactly a food truck but more like a food experience :-) The pulled pork is by far, the best I've ever had, super smoky and incredibly flavorful. The mac-n-cheese rolls are to die for and they do a great Mexican corn on the cob. The only downside I've noticed is that their brisket has tended to be a bit too fatty for me and sometimes they don't have the pulled pork so you're stuck with the brisket. For me the brisket is a 3 star dish but the pork and the Mac rolls are so good this review should be a 4.5 overall definitely worth tracking these guys down l :-) read more

He brought over an assistant Deb who kept things running smoothly for all of us. There were 4 of us taking the cooking class and Kurt was INCREDIBLY knowledgeable, relaxed, fun, flexible with our group/kitchen, and made us feel great even though we didn't know much about cooking! He was a great teacher and knew when to step in and when to step back so we could learn as much as possible. He even asked us in advance what in particular we wanted to learn and he followed up at the end to ensure we all got what we asked for. He goes above and beyond and his price is SO affordable. I'd give this book three stars because overall The Samurai's Garden was a pretty good read. The multiple settings within the book and the easy-going simplicity made it enjoyable to read. The mixed, confusing, plots made the stories interesting subjects become somewhat boring and repetitive overtime. Causing the story to start off very intriguing, but after multiple plots abruptly stopped it began to become dull and tiring. The ending was unsatisfying due to no "tie-together" of the different storylines. It also was a bland unexciting ending, that didn't resolve or give any conclusion. In reflection I would recommend reading this book for "good" setting, but don't expect conclusions of the multiple plots in the end. read more

For the food: First off, you're in solvang so as you stare at the old school danish houses and the signs for pancake houses, bakeries, and chocolate stores, you're bound to be in a good [albeit twilight zone-ish] mood. Walking up to the chefs touch felt a bit different that I imagined. Can't really place it, but it feels like a nice, airy, light cafe. We were disappointed to see that they stopped serving sunday brunch at 1pm even though their website says they serve brunch till 3....but their lunch menu was still looking good. We sat outside in the shadow of a nice windmill..... i had the reuben - it was delicious and the homemade sauerkraut was the best I've ever had. The chutney chicken pannini is also great, esp. if you like sweeter main courses. The open face prosciutto pannini was also said to be great - however, be careful not to inhale any of the mozarella on top while you're eating it. The carne asada tacos are 3 mini tacos with a bit of avocado - said to be super tasty. Only complaint is that the sandwiches ran around 10 bucks each....at 7 or 8 dollars this would be a perfect 5 stars. The service is friendly and quick. Can I even utter this: BEST BURGER I HAVE EVER HAD! This cafe should be packed constantly. You could easily walk by it and not notice it, but it is a little slice of heaven. The people there are so nice and you can watch them cook your food on a TV screen - neat! They also have a great cookbook selection. My husband and I needed a snack, so we decided to split their burger. Since we had never even heard of the place, we had no expectation at all - and ended up completely floored! The chef there is so good that they don't even ask you how you would like the burger cooked - they already know what is optimal there. Just let them serve the burger exactly as it is, no changes, and you will fall in love with their burger and their place just like we did. We are now going back there everytime we're in the area. read more
